Sacred Geometrix at the H & R Block City Stage Theater at Union Station.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 20, 2012

CONTACT: Andrea Skowronek, Artistic Co-Director (816) 210-1192 cell or andreaskowronek@yahoo.com

City in Motion Dance Theater will present its professional company concert, entitled Sacred Geometrix, on Friday, April 27; Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29, 2012 at the H & R Block City Stage Theater at Union Station.

Sacred Geometrix refers both to the sacred act of artistic creation and the linear and curved shapes in space formed by the human body. The concert will feature new choreography for the professional dance company by artistic co-directors Andrea Skowronek, Dale Fellin and Stephanie Whittler as well as dances by company members Amanda January, Ann Shaughnessy and Tuesday Faust.

Andrea Skowronek will premiere Fractals, for six dancers in three sections set to music by Steve Reich. Fractals are "rough or fragmented geometric shapes that can be split into parts, each of which is a reduced-size copy of the whole". While fractals are a mathematical construct, their patterns are found in nature, which has inspired their inclusion in artwork. Ms. Skowronek uses repetition, coupling, theme & variation and the manipulation of patterns and shapes in this evocative new work.

Dale Fellin's dance, Anudu,, with tribal, didgeridoo music by Ash Dargan, premiered at
A Modern Night at the Folly on February 18, 2012. "Physical, musical, and thrilling, Anudu brought down the house." David Ollington, kcactive.com

Mr. Fellin will also present a trio entitled Siamo, with music by Deru. Siamo explores the beauty and drama of both form and shape through the process of construction and deconstruction.

A duet, (as yet untitled) by Mr. Fellin with music by Vittorio Grigolo will provide a voyeuristic journey into the workings of male and female energies.

Stephanie Whittler will present her trio, Dysmorphia, with the quiet passion and anguished lyricism of the British rock band Placebo. The dancer's movements express emotional struggles, desperation and the occasional blur of reality.

Ms. Whittler will also present a group piece for six dancers entitled Steel Dreams, with music composed by Benoit Jutras from Cirque du Soleil – Quidam.

Amanda January will premiere Parts of Sleep, a group piece in three sections with music by Jobim, Nick Van Bloss, and Chris Brubeck. This lighthearted work explores insomnia, dreams, and the altered state that teeters between sleeping and waking.

Ann Shaughnessy will perform her solo, Bi'Ann, with Celtic music by Kila. This athletic tour d'force premiered at the Fringe Festival in July 2011.

Tuesday Faust will present a new duet inspired by her recent honeymoon in Italy.

City in Motion Dance Theater's Sacred Geometrix will be presented on Friday, April 27 and Saturday, April 28 at 8:00 PM and Sunday, April 29 at 2:00 PM at the H & R Block City Stage Theater at Union Station located at 30 West Pershing Road, Kansas City, MO 64108. A silent auction will take place on Saturday, April 28 in the lobby. Tickets for Sacred Geometrix are $18 in advance, $15 for students, seniors, and Union Station members, $10 for children 12 and under, and $20 at the door. Advance tickets are available by calling the Union Station Box Office at 816-460-2020 or online at www.unionstation.org.

Financial assistance for this project has been provided by the Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund, the Muriel McBrien Kauffman Foundation, the Arts KC Fund, and the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.

Press Release: James and the Giant Peach

A wild adventure takes place at Coterie during James and the Giant Peach April 10 – May 18

Roald Dahl's classic tale of friendship and adventure, James and the Giant Peach, performs April 10 – May 18 at the Coterie Theatre, level 1 Crown Center Shops. It's the story of crocodile tongues, horrible aunts, a ravenous rhinoceros and James who is miserable...until something peculiar happens involving a giant peach and group of talking insects! James and his diverse insect buddies work together to take the most wonderful and extraordinary journey they could ever imagine.

"Roald Dahl is a master storyteller, and in order to bring his fantastical story alive, we've assembled some of Kansas City's finest, seasoned actors – not to mention two special, young pros in the making," said Ernie Nolan, director.

"We're hoping that Dahl's special brand of magic will come alive using his marvelous language and a healthy dollop of theatre magic," Nolan said. "I've directed four other adaptations of Dahl's work and his canon is an explosion of creativity, humor, and heart. The incredible production team and I have set the production in a 1930s theatre. This way it's almost as if James and his insect friends are performing the story for audiences to hear their journey - kind of like The Muppet Show."

James and the Giant Peach is the second production in the Coterie's Family Series and is funded in part by the Missouri Arts Council (MAC) and the ArtsKC Fund. The adaptation is by David Wood.

Sweeney Todd in Kansas City, starring Don Richard & Cathy Barnett

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 9, 2012

OUR 10th SEASON!
"SWEENEY TODD – THE MUSICAL" APRIL 12-29, 2012
OFF CENTER THEATRE, CROWN CENTER

Musical Theater Heritage is proud to present 15 performances of SWEENEY TODD, starring local favorites and theater veterans
Don Richard & Cathy Barnett, with a cast of 18 people. This is MTH's 10th season, and they are thrilled to be professionally
presenting this musical masterpiece for the first time ever in Kansas City.

Winner of 8 Tony Awards, SWEENEY TODD tells the story of Benjamin Barker, alias Sweeney Todd, who returns to London after 15
years of being imprisoned on false charges. When he learns from his former landlady, Mrs. Lovett that his young wife
poisoned herself, and that his daughter Johanna was kidnapped by the judge who wrongly imprisoned him, he vows revenge. With
clever music & lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and a compelling book by Hugh Wheeler, this musical is perfectly blended to
provide an incredibly powerful evening of theater.

Artistic Director, Sarah Crawford who has directed and music directed nearly all of MTH's productions over the past 4 years
says, "Whenever you take a well-known, beloved musical like SWEENEY TODD and transform it into our unique format it's an
adventure. The result is often magical. Our intimate, stripped-down style serves the heart of the musical, the script and
score to our audience on a silver platter. Many would consider SWEENEY to be Sondheim's greatest and most complicated work,
but we have a particularly strong cast to take on this material with Don and Cathy at the helm."

MTH Executive Producer, Chad Gerlt agrees. "I believe one of the biggest keys to our success is finding the right talent for
each show," he says. "SWEENEY is a difficult score and will require excellent performers. Sarah does a great job casting
and always seems to find the absolute right people to play each part. I'm very excited about this cast."

That excitement starts with Don Richard, a Kansas City native who will be playing the role of Sweeney Todd. Don has appeared
in several Broadway shows and national tours, including original Broadway casts of JANE EYRE, URINETOWN, and 2,600 touring
performances of WICKED. But Don cut his theatrical teeth in Kansas City, appearing with every major theater in town. Don
left KC over 10 years ago, and is excited to be returning home to appear in his dream role as SWEENEY TODD.

Local favorite Cathy Barnett will be playing the role of Mrs. Lovett. Cathy has performed in national tours (FORBIDDEN
BROADWAY, FORBIDDEN HOLLYWOOD, and ALWAYS, PATSY CLINE), and she is a wildly popular performer in Kansas City. Cathy is
known for her comedic timing, and will no doubt bring wonderful life to Mrs. Lovett. (Continues)

The rest of SWEENEY's 18-member cast includes: Mark Poppleton, Julie Shaw, Katie Karel, Jacob Aaron Cullum, Brian LaFave,
Nathan Bovos, Brittanie Bagby, Jeff Berger, Shelby Floyd, Adam Henry, Samn Wright, Ashley Wheat, Nathan Whitson, Sarah
Dothage, Rachel Pallante, & Eleanor Hill, and a seven-member orchestra led by Jeremy Watson on piano.

Musical Theater Heritage has built a reputation producing big, classic musicals in their
"in-concert" style, and has garnished many local awards over the past few years. Their productions of Big River in 2009
received "Best Production of the Year", and 1776 was named the "Best Musical Revival in KC" in 2010.

Fascinating, pre-show talks are usually given by Executive Director, George Harter (host of the "A Night on the Town" radio
series). But what make MTH productions stand out are their large talented casts who bring to life these musicals in the
intimate space of the Off Center Theatre at Crown Center.

SWEENEY TODD runs April 12-29. Performances are Thursdays@7pm, Fridays@8pm, Saturdays@2pm & 8pm, and Sundays@2pm. For
tickets call the American Heartland Theater box office at (816) 842-9999 or visit www.MTHKC.com. For more information about
SWEENEY TODD and other MTH productions, contact Chad Gerlt at (816) 221-6987. Chad@musicaltheaterheritage.com.

Ellen DeShon – Nancy
Jordyn DeMarco – Agnetha
Danny Grumich – Ralph

One evening ten-year-old Rhona goes missing. Her
mother, Nancy, retreats into a state of frozen
hope, searching for answers. Agnetha, an American
academic, comes to England to research a thesis:
"Serial Killing—A Forgivable Act?" Then there's
Ralph, a pedophilic loner who's looking for some
distraction. Drawn together by horrific
circumstances, these three embark on a long, dark
journey which finally curves upward into the
light. Angry, humane and compassionate, FROZEN is
an extraordinary play that entwines the lives of a
murderer, the mother of one of his victims and his
psychologist to explore our capacity for
forgiveness, remorse and change after an act that
would seem to rule them out entirely.
Unfathomable, dark and raw, FROZEN asks some hard-
hitting questions with some dangerous answers.

90's Trivia Night Fundraiser

That's right! 90's Trivia...Help out Journeyman
Theatre Company and show us all up with you're
knowledge of the 90's! The proceeds of the evening
go towards Journeyman's next few shows to be
announced that night.

-The Break-down-

Up to 5 person teams @ $25.00 a team (simple math
is $5.00 a person if your team is maxed out)

5- 10 Question rounds (30 seconds to answer)

15 min. "smoke-em-if-you-got-em" breaks between
rounds!

Sure we all love a know-it-all! Think that's you?
Prove it! Support the arts, have some laughs, have
some booze, and take a stab at bringing home the
big J trophy and other exciting prizes. JTC could
use the support and at 8:30pm on a First Friday
you'll be boozing it up anyhow, why not at the
Czar Bar?! (that is if you're not in a show, or
seeing one)

Can't make the 9:00pm deadline for team sign-ups?
Come on down and share in the fun anyhow. Your
support helps regardless! It's not the size of
your contribution it's the color of your money!

Also, that night there will be a Change
Contest...each member of JTC will have a jar and
for every penny (who doesn't have pennies right?)
it's 5 points for that person. Now, here is where
this little game gets sinister, for every nickel,
dime, quarter, half dollar, Sacagawea dollar it's
negative points for that person. So, grab the
change out of your ashtray, peel it out of your
cup holder, find it on the ground and bring it in
to help support the arts.

summer reading guide

In October 2010, "KC Stage Magazine" ran a 'Fall Reading Guide', short book recommendations that were books you would put on a fictitious 'study guide'. (http://tiny.cc/kcstage-1010 to read the article online)

We're now hoping to do a 'summer reading guide', books that are more for the fun of it (fiction or non-fiction) that relate to the performing arts in some way (i.e., biographiers or autobiographies of performing artists, fiction books where the plot takes place at a theatre, etc.). For example, I may include a shorter version of my recommendation of "P.S. Your Cat is Dead" (http://angiefsutton.wordpress.com/2011/05/25/eview-ps-your-cat-is-dead/).

I'm not looking for full reviews/recommendations here - just a short paragraph or two as to what it's about and why you recommend this book specifically. Please include at the top the title, author, published date, publisher of the book, and how you want your name to appear in the article. (A link to where it is on Amazon would be helpful, but not required.)

Deadline is April 10 to be put into our May issue.

Jordyn DeMarco – Agnetha
Danny Grumich – Ralph

One evening ten-year-old Rhona goes missing. Her
mother, Nancy, retreats into a state of frozen
hope, searching for answers. Agnetha, an American
academic, comes to England to research a thesis:
"Serial Killing—A Forgivable Act?" Then there's
Ralph, a pedophilic loner who's looking for some
distraction. Drawn together by horrific
circumstances, these three embark on a long, dark
journey which finally curves upward into the
light. Angry, humane and compassionate, FROZEN is
an extraordinary play that entwines the lives of a
murderer, the mother of one of his victims and his
psychologist to explore our capacity for
forgiveness, remorse and change after an act that
would seem to rule them out entirely.
Unfathomable, dark and raw, FROZEN asks some hard-
hitting questions with some dangerous answers.
From beginning to end, this is a great gift of
live theatre that carries the audience safely away
to another time and place, only to return you
wiser and unharmed. "The difference between a
crime of evil and a crime of illness is the
difference between a sin and a symptom."ss

Auditions for The Laramie Project

River City Community Players announces auditions for The Laramie Project by Moisés Kaufman and the Tectonic Theater Project
March 12-13 at 7 p.m. Mon-Tue

Looking for 7 males and 6 females high school age to 99 for The River City Community Players' production of The Laramie Project. The Laramie Project tells the story of Matthew Shepard through the citizens of Laramie, Wyoming. There are 86 roles in this show to be played by 13 people so every person will be portraying multiple characters. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script.

In October 1998 a twenty-one-year-old student at the University of Wyoming was kidnapped, severely beaten and left to die, tied to a fence in the middle of the prairie outside Laramie, Wyoming. His bloody, bruised and battered body was not discovered until the next day, and he died several days later in an area hospital. His name was Matthew Shepard, and he was the victim of this assault because he was gay. Moisés Kaufman and fellow members of the Tectonic Theater Project made six trips to Laramie over the course of a year and a half in the aftermath of the beating and during the trial of the two young men accused of killing Shepard. They conducted more than 200 interviews with the people of the town. Some people interviewed were directly connected to the case, and others were citizens of Laramie, and the breadth of their reactions to the crime is fascinating. Kaufman and Tectonic Theater members have constructed a deeply moving theatrical experience from these interviews an!
d their own experiences. THE LARAMIE PROJECT is a breathtaking theatrical collage that explores the depths to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion of which we are capable.

Camelot - Last Weekend

The River City Community Players announces the last weekend for Camelot.

If you haven't seen this remarkable show; you need to call now for your
reservations for either Friday or Saturday night at 8 p.m.

Below are comments made on KCStage.com regarding the show:

First I would like to talk about the set. From the moment I entered the theater, I was completely taken with an ENORMOUS tree occupying the entire downstage right area of the stage. Beautifully decorated, it was obvious the designer/crew were not merely trying give you an impressive set piece, but give you the feeling you were walking into a fairy tale world! Very well done and well used, as the tree was literally the launching pad for Arthur in the first act. But enough about the tree. The revolving castle made the small stage seem so much
larger and gave the world of Camelot an added dimension you don't often see on many sets.

The costumes were period appropriate and beautiful! I was especially taken with
Guenevere. She was so beautiful. I loved seeing characters dressed in actual armor in many of the scenes. What a nice touch. The fight scenes done in shadow were very cool.

Let me say up front I have known and worked with Jeff Adams for some time and thought I knew his talent. And in my mind's eye I would never have considered him to play Arthur.

Boy, was I ever wrong (sometimes I like that when that happens). He is absolutely magnificent in the role of King Arthur. I've been associated with the RCCP for over 24 years and there is no doubt in my mind that his portrayal of King Arthur is one of the top 5 male vocal leads at the RCCP during that time period. It was truly a pleasure to watch him throughout the
production. Everything from timing, delivery, accent, energy, presence, emotions, you name it - he was spot on!

Sarah DaMetz, as Guenevere, has a very nice strong voice and carried all of her songs very well. She has a nice look for Guenevere. However, a lot of her dialogue was not clear and I kept wanting more from her character. Essentially
she lacks any depth in her performance. It was a safe, don't take any chances, good performance.

Coby Anderson, as Lancelot, worked very hard at being Lancelot. The desire was there. You could see it. But he lacked the maturity and panache to carry the part. The old saying "Never send a boy to do a man's work" holds true here. But he was the best choice for the role. While his attempt at a French accent was pretty good and consistent throughout, he would fair far better backing off a
little and being more understandable and focusing on the character. Just my opinion.

The chemistry between Arthur and Guenevere was pretty good as was the chemistry between Arthur and Lancelot. But the chemistry between Guenevere and Lancelot just wasn't there for me. Developing the characters and relationships, and ultimately the chemistry between the characters, is the only minor shortcoming that stood out.

Another standout was Spencer Williams as Mordred. His portrayal, although close to being over the top, was truly outstanding. If ever there was a character you love to hate, it is Mordred.

Other notable and enjoyable performances were put in by John Van de Voort as Pellinore, Leah Albee as Morgan Le Fey, and Tracy McClung as Lady Elaine.

Costuming Camelot was a major undertaking and the costumers and costume crew deserve all the accolades possible for making the inhabitants of Camelot look so magnificent. Great job.

Tisha did an excellent job with the set design and staging of the show. Scene changes went smoothly and were seamless keeping the show running at a good pace. The use of the silhouetting for the fight scenes, a dance number, and other things was very well done. The lighting design enhanced the production setting
very nice moods and changes in scenery.

This was a very well put together production and I highly recommend that if you haven't seen it yet, come to the final weekend performance. It will be an evening well spent.

Camelot is being performed at the Leavenworth Performing Arts Center located on the corner of 5th & Delaware, Leavenworth, Kansas

Press Release: Coterie's Lucky Duck at Folly; NYC

THE COTERIE'S LUCKY DUCK SOARS AT THE FOLLY THEATER MARCH 8 BEFORE ITS NYC DEBUT

What happens once the Ugly Duckling comes out of her shell? She takes a show business journey to become a singing swan superstar! Kansas City audiences can catch the one-night-only performance of Lucky Duck by the Coterie Theatre at 7 p.m. March 8 at the Folly Theater, 1020 Central. The musical comedy with its Kansas City cast will then take flight for its debut at the New Victory Theater in New York March 16-25.

A modern twist on the Ugly Duckling, this musical comedy centers around songbird Serena who is viewed as an odd duck by her family. She runs away from the barnyard mockery to seek her special destiny—success as a supermodel swan—and tries to see what beauty truly is. Audiences will enjoy Serena's journey from barnyard to New Duck City to the Quackerdome with star turn numbers including "Average, Simple Mega Superstar" and "Wipe the Egg Off Your Face" by the award-winning composer Henry Krieger (Dreamgirls; Side Show) with lyrics by Bill Russell (Side Show; Pageant). Book is by Bill Russell and Jeffrey Hatcher (Tuesdays with Morrie; Ella) and directed by Jeff Church, Coterie producing artistic director.

Lucky Duck was a major hit when it first premiered at the Coterie Theatre in the summer of 2010. "We aim to attract talent of the highest caliber to actively write for our audience," Church said. "With Lucky Duck, it was an important opportunity for us to again work with Broadway talent. In this case, we were thrilled to be working with Henry Krieger, Bill Russell and Jeffrey Hatcher.

"The fact is that Kansas City possesses this amazing musical theatre talent - we have all known that for years - and now we get to take our actual Kansas City actors to New York City for a run. It's very exciting to us on so many levels," he said. "The New Victory Theater curates performances from all over the world, with the intention of only bringing the best to its audiences there in New York. It's an honor to be one of the few American companies invited to perform there."

Lucky Duck is funded in part by Missouri Arts Council (MAC), ArtsKC Fund, the Callison Family, William T. Kemper Foundation, PNC Foundation and Susanne Christopher Shutz.

LUCKY DUCK AND THE COTERIE LAB FOR NEW FAMILY MUSICALS
Lucky Duck became the seventh musical developed in the Coterie's Lab for New Family Musicals. The initial production of Lucky Duck was at Theatreworks in Palo Alto (then called Everything's Ducky) and then at The Old Globe. Jeff Church, Coterie Artistic Producing Director, contacted the creative team of Henry Krieger, Bill Russell and Jeffrey Hatcher, with the idea of a new version that could become a very smart family audiences' piece with its fractured fairytale sensibility.

The Coterie's Lab for New Family Musicals began with its notable production of Seussical (Lynn Ahrens, Stephen Flaherty) which formalized the idea of bringing a different caliber of shows and writers to family musicals. The program was created to help accomplished Broadway composers find a way into the field of professional theatre for young audiences, and at the same time create musicals in a size and scale that other professional theatres for young audiences can produce.

Other TYA musicals developed in the Coterie Lab include work by Harry Connick, Jr. (The Happy Elf), Stephen Schwartz (Geppetto & Son -now My Son Pinocchio), Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Seussical, Twice Upon A Time and Once On This Island) and Willie and Robert Reale (The Dinosaur Musical).
