Emporia State University 2016-17 Theatre Season

Emporia State University Theatre 2016 – 2017
Season
Big River, The 39 Steps, Six Characters in
Search of an Author & Sense and Sensibility

Emporia State University Theatre is
preparing for its new season of plays and
musicals. The season features three shows
adapted from popular novels and a classic of
the twentieth-century theatre.
The season begins with the Homecoming
scholarship musical, Big River, The Adventures
of Huckleberry Finn. Propelled by an award
winning score from Roger Miller, Mark Twain's
timeless classic sweeps us down the mighty
Mississippi as Huck Finn helps his friend Jim,
a slave, escape to freedom at the mouth of the
Ohio River. Their adventures bring to life
favorite characters from the novel including
the Widow Douglas; the uproarious King and
Duke; Huck's pal, Tom Sawyer, and their rowdy
gang; Huck's drunken father, the sinister Pap
Finn; the lovely Mary Jane Wilkes and her
trusting family. Under the direction of Jim
and Lindy Bartruff, Big River will run in The
Karl C. Bruder Theatre in King Hall, October
13th through the 16th.
The 39 Steps is the second production
of the season. It was adapted from a novel of
the same name by John Buchan, but is perhaps
best known as the film by Alfred Hitchcock.
Adapted for the stage by Patrick Barlow and
under the direction of Theresa Mitchell, The 39
Steps is a fast-paced whodunit for anyone who
loves the magic of theatre! Over 150 zany
characters (played by a ridiculously talented
cast of 4), an on-stage plane crash, handcuffs,
missing fingers and some good old-fashioned
romance! A man with a boring life meets a
woman with a thick accent who says she's a spy.
When he takes her home, she is murdered. Soon,
a mysterious organization called "The 39 Steps"
is hot on the man's trail in a nationwide
manhunt. The 39 Steps runs from November 30th
through December 3rd in the Bruder Theatre.
The spring semester begins with a
classic of the twentieth-century theatre, Six
Characters in Search of an Author by Luigi
Pirandello. When first produced in 1921, the
play left its original audience baffled. But
since, the play has become a regular on stages
throughout the world. In the play, six
fictional characters, abandoned by their
creator, invade a rehearsal in progress and
demand to be brought to life by a new author.
But the characters' agenda collides with the
more lighthearted ambitions of these theatre
artists, whose open rehearsal "audience
engagement event" becomes darkly entangled with
the characters' tragic story -- all the while
asking the audience to consider just what is
real. Under the direction of Senior Theatre
Major Nathan Dale Short, Six Characters in
Search of an Author will be presented March 1st
through the 4th in the Karl C. Bruder Theatre.
Bursting with humor & emotion, Sense and
Sensibility asks: when reputation is
everything, how do you follow your heart? ESU
Theatre will present the regional premiere of
the work under the direction of Dan Matisa,
April 25th through the 29th in the Ronald Q.
Frederickson Theatre in Roosevelt Hall.
Actress Kate Hamill has adapted Jane
Austen's Sense and Sensibility where it
continues to run in a much-celebrated off-
Broadway production. You've never seen Austen
like this! Called the "greatest stage
adaptation of this novel," this new adaptation
follows the adventures (and misadventures) of
the Dashwood sisters—sensible Elinor and
hypersensitive Marianne—after their sudden loss
of fortune. During the rehearsals in Emporia,
the playwright will travel to Emporia to be a
part of the play's preparation and to visit
with local theatre-goers.

Open Call Auditions

EnArts announces an Open Call for auditions for
The Toymaker and Me (by Marc Wayne).

Everyone has a spark that makes them something
special—even though, sadly, it can go
undiscovered or be extinguished. Join us on a
journey of awakening and rediscovery as Thoman
Baker—a very special toymaker—and Claire—a
precocious and determined orphan—discover and
rediscover their special sparks, as . . . they
find each other. When a gift meets a need—
sparks fly and life happens. In Marc Wayne's
The Toymaker and Me, that life comes in
surprisingly moving ways.

This premier production of Marc Wayne's
(www.marcwayne.com) The Toymaker and Me is
family-friendly and appropriate for all ages.
It may be especially appealing to kids, as it
focuses on a young orphan girl (approximately
11-12 years old) who in the process of
discovering her unique giftedness (her "spark")
helps Mr. Baker, a somewhat cranky old
toymaker, rediscover the joy and meaning of
life. Kids of all ages will certainly enjoy the
results of their connection, as toys of all
types come alive onstage before our very eyes.

The Toymaker and Me is written and directed by
Marc Wayne, produced by EnArts
(www.enarts.org). Leads are paid, non-union
roles, commensurate with age and experience.

Show dates and location are still being
finalized: First run will likely be November
17-23 at the Vineyard Church (12300 NW
Arrowhead Trafficway, KC, MO 64165) in the
Kansas City Northland; with a potential second
4-5 day run at a different venue in December.
Rehearsals begin September 6, with evening and
possibly some daytime rehearsals (for those
whose schedules will permit). More details at
www.enarts.org/whats-happening.

Leads/Principals

Claire
Claire is an 11-12-year-old orphan girl with no
last name. She is sweet, curious, extremely
perceptive (precocious in this sense) and
persistent, though somewhat socially awkward
(probably as a result of her unsettled
history). Claire's strongest characteristic is
her big heart. This, in essence, is her
"spark"—Claire is very compassionate, a
characteristic which, when combined with her
perceptiveness, allows her to sense and feel
people's hurts/needs sooner and deeper than
others. As an orphan who has been in foster
homes and "rejected" by families all her life,
she is fundamentally sad and lonely (a trait
which allows her to sympathize with others who
experience the same thing). She thus longs to
find a home and be wanted and needed.

Thoman Baker
Thoman is a late 40s-55-year-old widower. He
is—or was—a toymaker. He was in fact the toy-
maker—the envy of other toymakers—because his
toys didn't need wind-up knobs or springs. In
the hands of a good- or open-hearted person,
Thoman's toys came alive. The ability to make
toys that "lived" in the hands of receptive
people was Thoman's special gift or "spark."
(Think, the quintessential encourager.) As we
come to learn, it did not exist on its own,
however, but was fueled by Thoman's love for
his wife, who had a big heart for children,
especially sick and orphaned children. When
his pregnant wife, Ella, and their unborn child
die, Thoman's "spark" is extinguished and, over
time, he becomes an isolated, somewhat crusty,
"grumpy old man." Thoman is thus stuck in the
past, with a deep and profound sadness that
prevents him from experiencing and enjoying
anything new—that is until Claire comes along
(and we see his slow rediscovery of life).

Cynthia Applegate
Cynthia Applegate is a caring, middle-aged
woman, who through the years has fostered many
children in need of homes. She is an orderly,
woman of faith (though not rigid) who provides
a stable and encouraging place for Claire and
Bethany. She has a somewhat unrevealed
knowledge of the history of the town and its
people—enough to "protect" and guide the
children.

Bethany
Bethany is an energetic, curious, outgoing and
outspoken 10-12-year-old orphan girl, who lives
with Claire and Ms. Applegate. Slightly self-
absorbed, Bethany's "on-the-go" spirit combines
with her expressive nature to create awkward
and even tense moments, often via blunt
questions or statements. Living with Ms.
Applegate, she is "like a sister" to Claire.

ALTAR BOYZ to Kick-Off Olathe Civic Theatre Association's 2016-2017 Season

Joel Nichols Joins OCTA as VOICE OF G.O.D. in Musical Comedy Aug. 26-Sept. 11

Olathe, KS (Update August 19, 2016) – Rejoice! Olathe Civic Theatre Association (OCTA) opens its 2016-2017 season this Friday, August 26, with the beloved Off-Broadway musical comedy hit ALTAR BOYZ, written by Kevin Del Aguila, with music and lyrics by Gary Adler and Michael Patrick Walker, August 26 – September 11.

Let OCTA take you back to a time when boy bands ruled the nation. Watch as five small-town Boyz, Matthew (Scott Michael Salem), Mark (Gabe Lasley), Luke (Jeremy Walterman), Juan (Delano Mendoza), and Abraham (Zane Champie), sing their way to holy, holy fame and glory. Their pious pop act includes lyrics like "Girl You Make Me Wanna Wait" and "Jesus Called Me on My Cell Phone," which worked miracles on the Ohio bingo-hall-and-pancake-breakfast circuit. But when fate brings them to New York, will the Boyz take a bite out of the forbidden apple?

Say "Amen!" and "Hallelujah!" as OCTA is proud to welcome back Guy Gardner to the theatre, this time as both director and choreographer. "After I choreographed I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change [2012-2013 season] I knew that I wanted to utilize such a unique space for a show. I've done a lot of funny shows, but this is the funniest script I have read in a long time. I can't wait to hear the roars of laughter from the audience."

So what can audiences expect? Gardner, known for his dynamic choreography, reveals that the show will entertain people from all walks of life with hilarity, dance, and "…amazing singing. The boys we have brought together are all amazing vocalists and I can't wait for everyone to hear their harmonies." He also praises what the show promises to deliver: "I want people to leave with a smile on their face, a resurgence of love for Boy Bands, and an appreciation for a tech heavy theatrical production."

Additionally, OCTA is thrilled to announce that local television personality Joel Nichols of KSHB Channel 41's Kansas City Live has joined the show as the Voice of G.O.D. Joel's voice will be heard before the show during preshow announcements and during the production.

Gardner brings his own "band" back together with the production team composed of James Levy (music director), Rebekah Grieb (stage manager), J. Patrick Inlow (lighting and media designer), Philip Kuzila (sound designer), and Fran Kapono-Kuzila (costumer) along with Dalton Homolka (assistant director) and Kelsie Clark-Massey (accompanist).

The show runs three weekends, August 26, 27, 28, and September 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 with Friday and Saturday night performances at 8 pm and Sunday matinees at 2 pm. Find out more about Altar Boyz and purchase tickets at www.olathetheatre.org. Subscribers can make reservations by calling the theatre reservation hotline at 913-782-2990 or by writing to tickets@olathetheatre.org. The show is suitable for all ages.

with lesser-known works based on Hamlet, The
Tempest and The Taming of the Shrew.
Performances are at Theatre Lawrence, who
partners with LOT for a third season, providing
its state-of-the-art theatre for these
presentations. The popular musical theatre
cabaret is back, titled Brush Up Your
Shakespeare!,, featuring music from the Bard's
plays set for Broadway (think Kiss Me, Kate and
West Side Story). A free master class with
baritone Andrew Stuckey is open to the public
on August 13th. LOT has become known for its
fully-staged opera productions with unusual
settings and interpretations. This year they
turn to Henry Purcell, presenting Dido and
Aeneas interpolated with music from The Fairy
Queen.

Founded by KU alum and Metropolitan Opera tenor
Hugo Vera, the annual festival brings in young
professional singers from New York, St. Louis
and Tucson, and features many young artists
from the Lawrence and Kansas City area.
Providing opportunities for young singers,
community members, and emerging professionals,
as well as established vocal artists, to gain
performing experience is part of LOT's mission,
and Vera achieves this by filling the void of
opera and vocal music during the summer season
in the Kansas City region.

Updated Open Call for Auditions -Addams Family (the musical) with character listing

The River City Community Players announce an Open Call for auditions for The Addams Family (the musical.)

The Addams Family (the musical) features an original story, and it's every father's nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family.

A man her parents have never met. And if that weren't upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he's never done before ... keep this secret from his beloved wife, Mortica.

Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday's 'normal' boyfriend and his parents.

Music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa, directed by Nino Casisi.

Please prepare 16-32 bars of a Broadway style selection (not from the Addams Family) to showcase your vocal range. Make sure your song is memorized.

Bring sheet music with your part highlighted. An accompanist will be provided.

NO ACCAPELLA singing or device like CD, I-Pod, MP3 or cell phone will be allowed.

Audition dates are Monday and Tuesday, August 29th and 30th 7 to 10 p.m., with callback being held on Wednesday, August 31st from 6:30 to 10 p.m.
Try to be familiar with the concept of the movie, the characters and the music from the show. Dress accordingly for a short dance audition including footwear.

Bring a resume and a complete list of conflicts from Aug 29 to Nov 6.

Performances dates are October 21, 22, 28, 29, 31; November 4, 5 and 6.

SPECIAL NOTE: October 31 is a special Halloween performance at 7 p.m.
Leavenworth Performing Arts Center, 500 Delaware St, (913) 651-0027, River City Community Players

Principal Roles (Male)
Gomez Addams, Playing Age: 40-50 - A man of Spanish descent who takes great pride in his family and revels in all it means to be an "Addams." He struggles with having to keep his daughters secret from his wife, whom he adores more than death. Smart, comedic actor with tenor vocals. Husband to Morticia, if indeed they are married at all ... a crafty schemer, but also a jolly man in his own way... though sometimes misguided ... sentimental and often puckish - optimistic, he has full enthusiasm for his dreadful plots... is sometimes seen in a rather formal dressing gown.
Vocal Range: Tenor - B flat to G sharp;
Dancing: Waltz, Tango and Superior Movement

Uncle Fester (Addams), Playing Age: 30-40 - The androgynous family member who serves as the musicals narrator. He is larger than life, an energetic, joyous, child-like presence. A vaudeville style comedian with tenor vocals. Uncle Fester is incorrigible and except for the good nature of the family and the ignorance of the police, would ordinarily be under lock and key ... the eyes are pig-like and deeply embedded ... he likes to fish, but usually employs dynamite ... he keeps falcons on the roof which he uses for hunting ... his one costume, summer and winter is a black great coat with an enormous collar... he is fat with pudgy little hands and feet.
Vocal Range: Tenor - C sharp to C sharp (preferably at belt)
Dancing: Minimal but Basic Movement

Lucas Beineke, Playing Age: 18-24 - Attractive, in shape young man. Fell in love with Wednesday Addams and plans to marry her. Experiences the youthful pain and drama of young love and struggles with the differences between his family and the Addams family. Contemporary pop tenor vocals. Lucas is (for the most part), a fairly normal person. He writes poetry and is apparently a romantic. He also has a crazy and dark side, proven during "Crazier Than You". He also seems to believe in traditional things like getting his parents blessing before getting married.
Vocal Range: Tenor - C sharp to C sharp
Dancing: Waltz and Basic Movement

Pugsley Addams, Playing Age: 10–14 - A charming, funny, husky boy who loves being tortured by his sister. He wants to ensure he won't lose his sister to her new boyfriend so he takes matters into his own hands. Strong, high vocals. Voice not yet changed. An energetic monster of a boy ... and a dedicated troublemaker, in other words the kid next door ... genius in his own way, he makes toy guillotines, full-size racks, threatens to poison his sister, can turn himself into a Mr. Hyde with an ordinary chemical set ... his voice is hoarse ... is sometimes allowed an occasional cigar (but not during the show).
Vocal Range: Tenor - A sharp to F sharp
Dancing: Minimal but Basic Movement

Mal Beineke, Playing Age: 40-55 - Stuffy father of Lucas and exasperated husband to his rhyming wife, Alice. At one time was a follower of The Grateful Dead but has lost that side of himself. Always looking out for his family. Male actor with high baritone/tenor vocals. Loves his family but has trouble dealing with both Alice and Lucas as well as his inner being.
Vocal Range: Tenor - C sharp to A sharp
Dancing: Waltz and Basic Movement

Lurch, Playing Age: 30-60 - A very tall male character, the Addams butler who knows all. He speaks in moans and groans without becoming a cartoon version of himself. His movement is always very slow. Character actor with a low bass vocal.
Vocal Range: Bass - E flat to E sharp
Dancing: None

Principal Roles (Female)
Morticia Addams, Playing Age: 40-55 – In shape, attractive, leggy, the strength of the family. An easy comedic actress with a sexy, dry wit. Feels her husband is hiding something from her and will use any tactic to lure the secret out. A strong dancer/mover with alto/mezzo soprano vocals. The real head of the family ... low-voiced, incisive and subtle, smiles are rare ... ruined beauty ... contemptuous and original and with fierce family loyalty ... even in disposition, muted, witty, sometimes deadly ... given to low-keyed rhapsodies about her garden of deadly nightshade, henbane and dwarf's hair...
Vocal Range: Alto - G sharp to B flat
Dancing: Waltz, Tango and Superior Movement (very sexy dance moves)

Wednesday Addams, Playing Age: 16-21 - Wednesday is an attractive, in shape girl who has the same dry wit and sensibility of her mother. Finds love with a "normal" boy (Lucas) and wants to introduce his family to hers. Experiences the youthful drama that comes with first love. Lucas can actually put a smile on her face. Strong popbelt vocals. Child of woe is wane and delicate ... sensitive and on the quiet side, she loves the picnics and outings to the underground caverns ... a solemn child, prim in dress and, on the whole, pretty lost ... secretive and imaginative, poetic, seems underprivileged and given to occasional tantrums ... has six toes on one foot.
Vocal Range: Soprano - A sharp to E sharp
Dancing: Waltz and Basic Movement

Alice Beineke, Playing Age: 30-40 - Mother of Lucas, devoted to her family so she puts aside her own desires. In shape, quirky female who often speaks in rhyme. While at the Addams Family dinner party, she drinks a potion that causes her to let her hair down and speak her truth. Comedic actress with soprano/belt vocals.
Vocal Range: Soprano - A flat to G sharp
Dancing: Waltz and Basic Movement

Grandmama, Playing Age: 60-80 - She is a feisty 102 year old woman. Fun and quirky, but don't mess with Grandma. Comedic actress with strong character vocals. This disrespectful old hag is the mother of Gomez ... she willingly helps with the dishes, cheats at solitaire and is roughly dishonest ... the complexion is dark, the hair is white and frizzy and uncombed ... she has a light beard and a large mole ... foolishly good natured ... fumbling, weak character ... is easily fooled.
Vocal Range: Belt - G sharp to F sharp
Dancing: Minimal but Basic Movement

ENSEMBLE ANCESTORS (The Extended Family) - 5 Male and 5 Female (or more if desired) Ensemble Singers and Dancers who are smart performers, who can morph into statues at a given moment and are trained dancers who have a fun and quirky sensibility. These actors should be from the age of 18 (possibly the age of 16 depending on vocal ability) who have a good range of dance styles.
Women-Jilted Bride, Flapper, Native American, Flight Attendant, Saloon Girl
Men-Caveman, Conquistador, Puritan, Soldier, Victorian Gambler
Vocal Ranges: All Ranges
Dancing: Tango, Flamenco, Waltz and Basic Movement.

- Scripts may not have been produced or self-produced
previously in the Greater Kansas City area.

- Each playwright may submit up to two (2) scripts for
review.
- Scripts may only be submitted electronically to
"tenminute@thebarnplayers.org". Scripts sent via US mail
or dropped off at The Barn will not be considered.
- Each play must be a blind submission (i.e. no playwright
identifiers anywhere on the script or cover page) and must
be accompanied by a separate document or email with

Open Call Auditions

Auditions for . . .

The Toymaker and Me (by Marc Wayne)

Everyone has a spark that makes them something
special—even though, sadly, it can go
undiscovered or be extinguished. Join us on a
journey of awakening and rediscovery as Thoman
Baker—a very special toymaker—and Claire—a
precocious and determined orphan—discover and
rediscover their special sparks, as . . . they
find each other. When a gift meets a need—
sparks fly and life happens. In Marc Wayne's
The Toymaker and Me, that life comes in
surprisingly moving ways.

This premier production of Marc Wayne's
(www.marcwayne.com) The Toymaker and Me is
family-friendly and appropriate for all ages.
It may be especially appealing to kids, as it
focuses on a young orphan girl (approximately
11-12 years old) who in the process of
discovering her unique giftedness (her "spark")
helps Mr. Baker, a somewhat cranky old
toymaker, rediscover the joy and meaning of
life. Kids of all ages will certainly enjoy the
results of their connection, as toys of all
types come alive onstage before our very eyes.

The Toymaker and Me is written and directed by
Marc Wayne, produced by EnArts
(www.enarts.org). Leads are paid, non-union
roles, commensurate with age and experience.

Show dates and location are still being
finalized: First run will likely be November
17-23 at the Vineyard Church (12300 NW
Arrowhead Trafficway, KC, MO 64165) in the
Kansas City Northland; with a potential second
4-5 day run at a different venue in December.
Rehearsals begin September 6, with mostly
evening and possibly some daytime rehearsals
(for those whose schedules will permit). More
details coming soon at www.enarts.org/whats-
happening.

Claire
Claire is an 11-12-year-old orphan girl with no
last name. She is sweet, curious, extremely
perceptive (precocious in this sense) and
persistent, though somewhat socially awkward
(probably as a result of her unsettled
history). Claire's strongest characteristic is
her big heart. This, in essence, is her
"spark"—Claire is very compassionate, a
characteristic which, when combined with her
perceptiveness, allows her to sense and feel
people's hurts/needs sooner and deeper than
others. As an orphan who has been in foster
homes and "rejected" by families all her life,
she is fundamentally sad and lonely (a trait
which allows her to sympathize with others who
experience the same thing). She thus longs to
find a home and be wanted and needed.

Thoman Baker
Thoman is a late 40s-55-year-old widower. He
is—or was—a toymaker. He was in fact the toy-
maker—the envy of other toymakers—because his
toys didn't need wind-up knobs or springs. In
the hands of a good- or open-hearted person,
Thoman's toys came alive. The ability to make
toys that "lived" in the hands of receptive
people was Thoman's special gift or "spark."
(Think, the quintessential encourager.) As we
come to learn, it did not exist on its own,
however, but was fueled by Thoman's love for
his wife, who had a big heart for children,
especially sick and orphaned children. When
his pregnant wife, Ella, and their unborn child
die, Thoman's "spark" is extinguished and, over
time, he becomes an isolated, somewhat crusty,
"grumpy old man." Thoman is thus stuck in the
past, with a deep and profound sadness that
prevents him from experiencing and enjoying
anything new—that is until Claire comes along
(and we see his slow rediscovery of life).

Cynthia Applegate
Cynthia Applegate is a caring, middle-aged
woman, who through the years has fostered many
children in need of homes. She is an orderly,
woman of faith (though not rigid) who provides
a stable and encouraging place for Claire and
Bethany. She has a somewhat unrevealed
knowledge of the history of the town and its
people—enough to "protect" and guide the
children.

Bethany
Bethany is an energetic, curious, outgoing and
outspoken 10-12-year-old orphan girl, who lives
with Claire and Ms. Applegate. Slightly self-
absorbed, Bethany's "on-the-go" spirit combines
with her expressive nature to create awkward
and even tense moments, often via blunt
questions or statements. Living with Ms.
Applegate, she is "like a sister" to Claire.

Open Call Auditions

Auditions for . . .

The Toymaker and Me (by Marc Wayne)

Everyone has a spark that makes them something
special—even though, sadly, it can go
undiscovered or be extinguished. Join us on a
journey of awakening and rediscovery as Thoman
Baker—a very special toymaker—and Claire—a
precocious and determined orphan—discover and
rediscover their special sparks, as . . . they
find each other. When a gift meets a need—
sparks fly and life happens. In Marc Wayne's
The Toymaker and Me, that life comes in
surprisingly moving ways.

This premier production of Marc Wayne's
(www.marcwayne.com) The Toymaker and Me is
family-friendly and appropriate for all ages.
It may be especially appealing to kids, as it
focuses on a young orphan girl (approximately
11-12 years old) who in the process of
discovering her unique giftedness (her "spark")
helps Mr. Baker, a somewhat cranky old
toymaker, rediscover the joy and meaning of
life. Kids of all ages will certainly enjoy the
results of their connection, as toys of all
types come alive onstage before our very eyes.

The Toymaker and Me is written and directed by
Marc Wayne, produced by EnArts
(www.enarts.org). Leads are paid, non-union
roles, commensurate with age and experience.

Show dates and location are still being
finalized: First run will likely be November
17-23 at the Vineyard Church (12300 NW
Arrowhead Trafficway, KC, MO 64165) in the
Kansas City Northland; with a potential second
4-5 day run at a different venue in December.
Rehearsals begin September 6, with mostly
evening and possibly some daytime rehearsals
(for those whose schedules will permit). More
details coming soon at www.enarts.org/whats-
happening.

Ladies of the Fly

What happens when a group of young girls re-imagine, workshop and perform their own unique take on William Golding's immortal novel The Lord of the Flies?

Find out in LADIES OF THE FLY, a new production by Lawrence's own Orange Mouse Theatricals.

Nine local girls (ages 8-16) worked closely with the Orange Mouse team of Cynthia Evans, local filmmakers/writers Mathew Klickstein, Kalee Forsythe, Justin Martinez and director Leah Towle on developing an entirely original play inspired by the themes of The Lord of the Flies.

After more than a year in development and six months of three-hour workshop sessions with the girls, Orange Mouse and its aforementioned associates concocted a unique, immersive hour-long theatrical experience that will invite audiences to fully enter the world, mind and imagination of this eclectic group of girls who are telling their own story about their day-to-day experiences in today's notably tempestuous but ever-evolving America.

With generous support from such local businesses as Grandstand Glassware & Apparel, Free State Brewery, the new art/food/culture space Culinaria and new art space Cider Gallery, LADIES OF THE FLY will premiere on Friday, August 26th from 5pm - 6pm at Cider Gallery (810 Pennsylvania St., Lawrence, KS) as part of their Final Friday event. A post-party with food and drinks will follow along with a q&a and discussion with the girls themselves at Culinaria, right up the street (512 E. 9th St., Lawrence, KS) from 6pm - 9pm.

A public reading/preview of the script with the co-writers and cast will take place at Culinaria on Saturday, August 13, 3pm - 4:30pm.

Having produced and performed numerous plays over the last few years in the local region, Orange Mouse Theatricals hopes to continue running LADIES OF THE FLY throughout the area as part of an educational tour of schools so students can experience this great classic of literature in a topical and contemporary way that will allow for more accessible connection.

In light of the recent surge of gender-bending genre creative machinations such as the all-female Ghostbusters reboot, LADIES OF THE FLY follows in the wake of a brighter era for female agency over such artistic expression. The producers are especially proud of the project having so directly taken on the influence of such a young group of girls whose expression itself is so fresh and vivacious.

A passionately progressive organization of creative individuals, Cynthia Evans' Orange Mouse Theatricals' most recent production was that of the provocative and iconic Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, featuring -- perhaps for the first time in this history of its successful four-decade run -- a transgender actress in the role of a prominent character who undergoes a sex change over the course of the play's narrative.

LADIES OF THE FLY is co-written, along with the girls in the cast themselves, by local author/filmmaker Mathew Klickstein and screenwriter/playwright Justin Martinez; produced by Mathew Klickstein and Cynthia Evans; assistant directed by local filmmaker/actress Kalee Forsythe and directed by local teacher/director Leah Towle.
