A NOTE ABOUT DIALECTS
All characters, with the exception of Tituba, are from the
New England area and should speak with a more proper
Americanized nearly British accent. No character should
have a Boston accent, nor should they speak in full on
British accents. The best way to think about it would be
to think of an American Shakespearean actor aiming for a
regionless dialect.
or expectations or to arrange an alternative audition time
should those dates not work for you or anything at all,

SYNOPSIS:
The Crucible is a dramatized and partially fictionalized
story of the Salem witch trials that took place in the
Massachusetts Bay Colony during the late 1600's. It
focuses on accusations, trials, heresay vs. evidence, and
character assassination. This production will take those
elements and paint a broader picture of persecution over
the entire history of witchcraft along with historical
moments of those wrongfully accused. Great attempts
will be made to bring the audience in as pseudo-jury
members for the trials portrayed within the play.

CAST BREAKDOWN (all ages listed refer to playable age
and not actual age):

LEAD ROLES

John Proctor
A local farmer known for his independence and temper.
He is married to Elizabeth Proctor who is accused of
witchcraft by Abigail Williams, in part because Abigail and
John had a brief affair. John is also accused of witchcraft
and eventually sentenced to hang. (Male – late 30's-40's)
Elizabeth Proctor

A quietly strong frontier wife who is honest to a fault and
is accused of witchcraft by Abigail Williams. Married to
John, she is spared the death penalty due to the fact she
is pregnant. (Female – late 30's-40's)
Abigail Williams

Prior to the start of the play, worked as a maid for the
Proctors until she was fired by Elizabeth under suspicion
of an affair with John. The ringleader of the young girls
in terms of creating the witchcraft scare in Salem.
victims of false accusations. (Male – 30+)

SUPPORTING ROLES

Reverend Samuel Parris
The minister of Salem. He is obsessed with keeping up
not attend church regularly or fails to recognize his piety
is someone not to be trusted. (Male – 40's)
Mary Warren

Replaced Abigail Williams as maid to the Proctors. She is
alternatingly weak and strong when faced with pressure
from others. She is a mostly sympathetic character who
seems to simply be in over her head. (Female – 20's,
young looking)

Deputy Governor Thomas Danforth
The chief judge of the court, he is power hungry and
believes in wielding his power over any and all who are
accused. According to Arthur Miller, he is the true villain
of the play for he should know better than to let the trials
proceed. (Male – 45+)

Judge John Hathorne
A judge of the court who essentially believes Abigail
against all evidence to the contrary. (Male – 40+)

Giles Corey
A close friend to the Proctor family, his wife is falsely
accused of witchcraft. He is frequently accused of
various crimes himself, so he knows the law. He may
resemble a town drunk, but he is smart, honest, strong,
and outspoken. Must be visibly strong. (Male – late
60's+)

Tituba
Slave of the Parris family, Tituba came to Salem from
Barbados. She has knowledge of a mystical nature and
helps the girls become infatuated with magic. This
character will speak in a Barbados dialect. (Female,
African American – any age)

Rebecca Nurse
Well respected and pious, Rebecca is accused of both
witchcraft and infanticide by Ann Putnam – Rebecca had
worked as a nursemaid for Ann. Married to Francis.
(Female – 60+)

Francis Nurse
Tries incredibly hard to clear his wife's name and his
other friends who have been accused. Married to
with her being ill. This sets off belief that she was
caused illness by witchcraft. (Female – 15ish, must look
younger than the other girls)

Thomas Putnam
A rich landowner trying to use accusations of witchcraft
to buy up land cheaply from those convicted. (Male – late
30's-40's)
will be combined)
Ann accuses Rebecca Nurse after seeing seven of her
children die shortly after birth. Sarah is essentially
accused for being strange. Martha (who we never see)
has some questionable books about witchcraft and is
eventually sentenced to die. (Female – late 30's-40's)

Marshal George Herrick
his wish is granted. After an understandably awkward
beginning, Josh is forced to do "adult" things like getting
a job and a girlfriend. In the end he discovers there's
much more to being an adult than he's bargained for, and
learns we must all grow up at our own pace, in our own
time.

PRESS RELEASE
For immediate release

Emporia State University Theatre presents live
radio broadcast of "A Christmas Carol".

Emporia State University Theatre students and
faculty will perform a radio adaptation of A
Christmas Carol, the timeless classic by
Charles Dickens, on December 10 at 7:00 pm in
the Karl C. Bruder Theatre. The performance
will be available to hear on the radio or
streamed online, but it can also be watched
live in the theatre. A suggested donation of $5
can be made at the door for the live
performance; donations will go toward theatre
scholarships. The performance will be broadcast
live on KISS 103.1 FM Radio.

The radio adaptation of the play was adapted by
Assistant Professor Dan Matisa. On the process
of adapting the play for radio, Matisa said, "I
loved re-reading the original Charles Dickens
story and adapting it for radio! I didn't look
at any other stage versions or adaptations of
the story—just the original Dickens novella.
Nearly every word we say will be from the pen
of Charles Dickens… My aim at the outset was to
stay as faithful as I could to the words of
Dickens, while getting the play to an hour in
length."

This will be the first radio performance
presented by the ESU Theatre Department in
collaboration with KISS 103.1. It is also KISS
103.1's first live radio play. ESU Theatre
students performed a radio adaptation of Frank
Capra's It's a Wonderful Life in 2009, however
that performance was not broadcast over the
radio.

Cameron Reynolds, ESU Theatre student and KISS
103.1 radio personality is "super excited for
the opportunity to produce this radio play.
Radio and theatre have been my passion for my
entire college career and I am overjoyed to
combine both of those to do something that is
not only great for the community, but also
allows me to give back to ESU Theatre."

Performers include Matisa (as Scrooge), Jim
Bartruff, Lindy Bartruff, Taylor Galloway,
Chris Lohkamp and Jennifer Newell. Student
performers include Bailey Carter, Tyler Lang,
Ryan Howerton, Justin Scheck and Nathan Short.
Music will be provided by Sue Seeman and
Madison Schultz. Before the program goes live
there will be a Christmas carol sing-along.
People of all ages are encouraged to listen on
air or attend the live performance on December
10 at 7:00 pm in the Karl C. Bruder Theatre in
King Hall.

CableOne is the corporate sponsor for the
broadcast and Brickyard 20 Ale House will host
an after party where "The Wanted" will be
playing live. The cover charge at the door will
also support ESU Theatre scholarships.
The Toymaker and Me by Marc Wayne: Nov 17-18, 22-
23: 7 pm; Nov 20: 7:30 pm

The Toymaker and Me tells the moving story of a
precocious orphan girl and a grumpy old toymaker
who in spite of repeated rejection and great
disappointment find the secret that gives life to
broken things. When a gift meets a need, sparks fly
Me, that life comes in surprisingly moving ways.

This premier production of Marc Wayne's The
Toymaker and Me is family-friendly and appropriate
for all ages. It may be especially appealing to
kids, as it focuses on a 12-year-old orphan girl
who in the process of discovering her unique
giftedness (her "spark") helps Mr. Baker, a grumpy
old toymaker, rediscover the joy and meaning of
life.
SYNOPSIS:
Set in the 1920s, Nice Work If You Can Get It is the story
of charming and wealthy playboy Jimmy Winter, who
meets rough female bootlegger Billie Bendix the weekend
of his wedding. Jimmy, who has been married three (or is
it four?) times before, is preparing to marry Eileen
Evergreen, a self-obsessed modern dancer. Thinking
Jimmy and Eileen will be out of town, Billie and her gang
hide cases of alcohol in the basement of Jimmy's Long
Island mansion. But when Jimmy, his wife-to-be and her
prohibitionist family show up at the mansion for the
wedding, Billie and her cohorts pose as servants, causing
hijinks galore.
