OCTA’s “The Best Man” Delivers Witty and Engrossing Political Drama

OCTA's "The Best Man" Delivers Witty and Engrossing Political Drama

Classic Script by Gore Vidal Explores Timeless Political Themes

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: Victoria Hoffman
816-728-2048 | victorialatoya72@gmail.com

OLATHE, KAN., Oct. 23, 2014: The Olathe Civic Theatre Association continues its 40th Anniversary Season with Gore Vidal's "The Best Man," which runs Nov. 7-23.

The story of two vying political candidates brings the backstabbing world of campaigning to light through a witty and thought-provoking script. Although the play first premiered on Broadway in 1960, its Broadway revivals in 2000 and 2012 are a testament to the play's staying power in reflecting the good, bad and ugly of U.S. politics, regardless of era.

The play begins with the Presidential primaries in Philadelphia, where an ethical man running for the Presidential nomination runs against an unscrupulous one. Liberal candidate William Russell is likeable and prides himself on his honesty finds challenges around every corner with the bigoted and dishonest populist southern senator Joseph Cantwell who will do anything to win. Both candidates try to get the endorsement of the popular outgoing president, who enjoys toying with them and encouraging dirty play by not telling them which one he'll endorse.

The show is directed by John Robison, who has founded both community theatre and improvisational acting organizations, including The Roving Imp Theatre in Lawrence, KS. He studied improvisational comedy in Chicago and has performed in and directed numerous theatrical organizations over the past 30 years.

"The Best Man script is so rich, and the characters are so multi-faceted, it's not really just a show about an election. It's a show about how humans interact when the stakes are high," Robison said.

"After this show, I hope audiences will take another look at their elected officials, peel away the television facade, and try to see the human that is so carefully hidden away. This play addresses the fact we're all just people, with our own individual strengths and weaknesses."

The cast includes Don Leonard, Anna Koehler, Joshua Epstein, Doug Ford, Meghann Bates, Peter Leondedis, Tom Sutton, Claudia Copping, Patty Peden, Laura Burt, Ken Schmidt, and Derrick Freeman, with a creative team of Erin Fox (stage manager) and Greg Westfall (set and lighting design).

The Best Man opens Nov. 7 and runs weekends through Nov. 23, with afternoon matinee performances on Sundays. Reservations and more information are available at olathetheatre.org or by calling 913-782-2990.

OCTA is a proud recipient of the PerformArts 2014-15 series grant, underwritten by the Richard J. Stern Foundation.

Much revived, most recently in a 2010 production transferred to Broadway from London's Menier Chocolate Factory, La Cage Aux Folles remains one of the all-time biggest hits, adding new dimension to the boulevard comedy. After twenty years of un-wedded bliss Georges and Albin, two men partnered for better-or-worse get a bit of both when Georges' son (fathered during a one-night fling) announces his impending marriage to the daughter of a bigoted, right-wing politician. Further complicating the situation is the 'family business': Albin and Georges run a transvestite nightclub in St. Tropez, where Albin is the "star" performer 'Zaza'. Georges reluctantly agrees to masquerade as "normal" when he meets the family of the bride-to-be. But Albin has other plans, with hilarious results.

To seal the deal and quell the tempers of the gangsters who are gathering in town and keen to 'shoot crap' he bets his buddy, Sky Masterson, a thousand dollars that Sky will not be able to take a local Salvation Army girl, Sarah Brown, on a date to Havana. Meanwhile Nathan, engaged for fourteen years to cabaret artist Miss Adelaide, is struggling to keep her demands for marriage at bay, whilst she continues to battle with the symptoms of an incessant psychosomatic cold that plagues her all the time she is waiting to go down the aisle.

SYNOPSIS:
When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, Ren is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. What he isn't prepared for are the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, determined to exercise the control over the town's youth that he cannot command in his own home. When the reverend's rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren's reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid. The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him. To the rockin' rhythm of its Oscar and Tony-nominated top 40 score (the soundtrack album reached number one on the Billboard charts and has sold over 15 million copies!) and augmented with dynamic new songs for the stage musical, FOOTLOOSE celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people, guid
ing them with a warm heart and an open mind.

CASTING INFORMATION:
MALE ROLES:
Rev. Shaw Moore: 40s – 50s, charismatic, charming, deeply religious, quick minded, a loving heart. Outwardly, strong for his congregation, inwardly, weak, as he still mourns for his dead son, and worries for his impulsive, but precious daughter.

Ren McCormack: teens – 20s, witty, full of energy, goes from being feisty and flippant to fully exploring his emotions as he journeys from boyhood to maturity of the course of events. The loss of his father proves common ground with Ariel as their relationship blossoms. The hero of the show.

Willard Hewitt: teens – 20s, not dumb, but a gentle soul with quick fists, which are his defense against a world he has trouble comprehending. Humorous, a great friend to Ren, and totally in love with Rusty, but slow to show it.

Chuck Cranston: teens – 20s, Ariel's boyfriend. Self assured, cocky, ignorant, a bully. Confident of his own importance, he realizes too late that Ariel is too good for him. A natural enemy to Ren.
Lyle & Travis: teens – 20s, Chuck's buddies. Carbon copies of Chuck. Love a good laugh, have no respect.

Coach Roger Dunbar: 40s – 60s, high school gym teacher. Fully supportive of the town's philosophy. Loves to bully his students, especially Ren.

Wes Warnicker: 40s – 60s, Ren's uncle. Trying to be his father, but not succeeding. Has little tolerance for the kids of the town.
Principal Harry Clark: 30s – 60s, fully supportive of the town's philosophy. Enforces it throughout his school. Tough and regimental.

Cowboy Bob: 30s – 60s, cameo role at Cowboy Bob's. The lead at the club. Confident, a ladies man.

Jeter, Bickle, & Garvin: teens – 20s, Ren's friends - confident, energetic, supportive, fun.

FEMALE ROLES:
Ariel Moore: teens – 20s, smart, completely aware of how to behave in front of her father and how different to behave with her friends. Dreams of getting out of the 'small town' prison she's in. Passionte, explosive and thrill-seeking.
Vi Moore: 40s – 50s, despite the loss of her son and her strained relationship with her husband, she displays unflagging good humor. Strong, resilient and proud, she is trying to do the best for daughter Ariel.

Rusty: teens – 20s, sassy and self assured, but on the quiet, deeply romantic side. The best friend a girl could have, loyal, amusing and sharp. She knows Willard and her are destined for each other.

Urleen & Wendy Jo: teens – 20s, great friends to Ariel and the girls, sassy, cheeky and desperate for fun.

Ethel McCormack: 30s – 40s, intelligent, with a real dry humor, fighting to be a good single mother for Ren. Loves her son dearly, tries to keep the peace but doesn't always agree with the town's rules.

Lulu Warnicker: 40s – 60s, proud of her town and family, deeply religious. At first supportive but later a little concerned for the wayward actions of Ren and her sister's handling of her son.

Eleanor Dunbar: 40s – 60s, Coach Dunbar's wife. Fully supportive of the ban on unsuitable youth behaviour in the community. Outspoken, confident.

Betty Blast: 30s – 60s, comic cameo role. Owner of the local burger joint. Proud of the kids, a little less judgmental. She is wise and fully aware of the town's politics.

Byrd Productions Presents: Mime ~ The Art of Physical Eloquence

Mime ~ The Art of Physical Eloquence

This three hour workshop is crafted not just for the performer who desires
to deepen their physical work, but just as importantly, for any professional
who uses the stage as a platform for communication.

The first thing the observer (audience) comes in contact with is the physical eloquence of the presenter.
This instrument known as the human body is the foundation of everything you do.
Knowing how to use, manipulate and express the body
is the essence of what the art of mime is all about.

During this three hours we will explore an array of techniques that will aid you in this creative
journey. We will start with a focused warm up that will blend into technique for several illusions,
character work (both human and non-human) and some of the elements.
My objective is for you to have a few applicable concepts and techniques that you can apply to
anything you (even you if you speak) do on stage. Your physical presence on stage will enhance
what you want to communicate and your presentation will never be the same.

Come dressed for freedom of movement and lets have a great and creative time.

SYNOPSIS: Based on the hit film and the incredible true story, Catch Me If You Can, is the high-flying musical comedy about chasing your dreams and not getting caught. Nominated for 4 TONY awards, including Best Musical, this delightfully entertaining show was created by a TONY Award-winning "dream team", with a book by Terrence McNally (The Full Monty, Ragtime) and a swinging score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray).
Seeking fame and fortune, precocious teenager Frank Abignale, Jr. runs away from home to begin an unforgettable adventure. With nothing more than his boyish charm, a big imagination and millions of dollars in forged checks, Frank successfully poses as a pilot, a doctor and a lawyer - living the high life and winning the girl of his dreams. But when Frank's lies catch the attention of FBI agent Carl Hanratty, Carl pursues Frank across the country to make him pay for his crimes.
Catch Me If You Can is a big and bright spectacle with high-energy dance numbers and a riveting story, making it an ideal choice for Community and Professional theatres.

Störling Dance Theater presents "Parables & Prayers" at The Polsky

Störling Dance Theater, a Kansas City
Professional Dance Company, presents "Parables
& Prayers" with new work, "For Those Who
Mourn", dedicated to the victims of the Jewish
Community Center shooting and the Jewish
Community, as well as a classic Störling piece
dedicated to the victims of ISIS.

Artistic Director and Choreographer, Mona
Störling-Enna has long been a part of bringing
dance into life since the beginnings of her
choreographic career in Finland. Her photo
album includes photos of her as a teenager with
Polish Solidarity leader, Lech Walesa after
smuggling Bibles into Poland in her costume
luggage on her way to perform for the
Communistic ruled people.

In "Parables & Prayers", Mrs. Störling-Enna
will present two works specifically dedicated
to recent struggles and tragedies: The Jewish
Community Center shooting and the slaughter of
innocents in Iraq by terrorists.

"For Those Who Mourn" shares a tender and
intimate look at the aftermath of the tragedy
in Overland Park. When Mona heard about the
Community Center shootings, it hit close to
home as the list of victims included former
Culture House student, Reat Underwood and his
grandfather. "For Those Who Mourn" is
dedicated to those who must live on after this
tragedy and those that are there to bring
comfort. The Jewish Community as a whole was
also targeted in this nightmare. "For Those
Who Mourn" is also dedicated to them with the
hopes of expressing unwavering support from the
community at large. The music of Rob Lane
provides the soundscape for the beautiful
movement and meaning of this unique dance.

"Her Last Prayer" was first premiered in 2002
and was designed after a true story of a young
teenage girl in China killed for her faith. It
is being revived this fall as we see the rise
in persecution of Christians and others not
compliant with the terrorist's ideals. The
sparse and haunting music of Estonia's, Arvo
Pärt is the perfect backdrop to this fragile
and moving dance.

Together with Associate Artistic Director,
Tobin James, Störling-Enna has crafted a fall
concert that is full of meaning and beauty, wit
and irony. Audiences should come prepared to
taken on a fast paced journey through a variety
of worlds and emotions. Other new works being
premiered at this event are Tobin James' "Don't
Say A Word" and Störling-Enna's fiery "Dirty
Laundry". James and Störling-Enna make a power
team as they fuse their two very different
styles to create a complex and sophisticated
repertoire for one of the most compelling dance
companies in Kansas City.

Störling Dance Theater hit the Kansas City
dance scene with strength in 2001 when it
presented "The Prodigal Daughter" which was
quickly chosen as one of K.C.'s Top 15 of the
year. Its production "UNDERGROUND",
choreographed by Störling-Enna and Tobin James
was chosen by critic, Paul Horsley, as one of
the Top 10 performances of the Decade and is in
its 8th year of annual presentation now held at
the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.
Mona Störling-Enna is founder of Störling Dance
Theater and the acclaimed Culture House Academy
of the Performing Arts.
