Theatre for Young America Offering Summer Theatre Arts Project Drama Camps

Theatre for Young America is taking enrollments for its 2013 Summer Theatre Arts Project Drama Camps. TYA offers a full array of theatre arts training for students, ages 3.5 years of age through 12th grade. Drama Camps are held at three different locations depending on the age level of the student.

Theatre Arts Project offerings and locations are as follows:

Camp 1. THE ADVENTURES OF DOCTOR DOOLITTLE

AGE, Section I: Preschool (at least 3.5 years of age) through Kindergarten
AGE, Section II: 1st grade through 3rd grade
LOCATION: Wonderscope Children's Museum of Kansas City, 5700 King, Shawnee, KS 66203
DATES: June 17-21, 2013, from 5 to 7pm daily with an onstage performance at 6pm Friday, June 21, 2013.
TUITION: $100

This musical play, adapted from the book by Hugh Lofting, centers around a special doctor who loves animals so much that he is able to talk with them. Characters include Polynesia the Parrot, Gub-Gub the Pig, Jip the Dog, Dab-Dab the Duck, and Chee-Chee the Monkey, as well as pirates and some wonderful never-seen-before African animals. Young actors learn musical theatre skills as they bring this play to life onstage.

Camp 2. THE WIZARD OF OZ

AGE: 4th grade through 8th grade
LOCATION: City Stage in Union Station, 30 W. Pershing, Kansas City, MO 64108.
DATES: July 8 -12, 2013, 9am to 5pm daily with an onstage performance at 3pm Friday, July 12, 2013
TUITION: $180
STUDENTS SHOULD BRING A SACK LUNCH EACH DAY

Based on the book by L. Frank Baum, this musical (not the film version) features Dorothy, the Tinman, the Cowardly Lion, and the Scarecrow as they outwit the Wicked Witch of the West to get to the Wizard of Oz. Glinda the Good and the Munchkins help the group find what they need and get Dorothy and Toto back to their home in Kansas. Campers work on songs, dances, characterization, acting, and stagecraft to prepare this play for an audience.

Camp 3. REVENGE OF THE SPACE PANDAS or
BINKY RUDICH AND THE TWO-SPEED CLOCK

AGE: 7th grade through 12th grade
LOCATION: Goppert Theatre at Avila University, 1190 Wornall Rd. Kansas City, MO 64145
DATES: July 22-26, 2013, 9am to 5pm daily with an onstage performance at 7pm Friday, July 26, 2013
TUITION: $200
STUDENTS SHOULD BRING A SACK LUNCH EACH DAY

This musical comedy by David Mamet with music by Alaric Jans is a hilarious science fiction trip taken by Binky Rudich, his friend Viv, and a sheep named Bob. The threesome have an exciting time traveling to Crestview, Fourth World in the Goolagong System, ruled by crazy George Topax and guarded by the Great Space Pandas. Technical theatre, costuming, musical theatre, and acting skills are among the topics the campers will experience as they rehearse this play.
