Les Misérables to Open the Jewish Community Center's White Theatre 2013-2014 Season

The international hit musical Les Misérables will open the 2013-14 season at the White Theatre at the Jewish Community Center, announced Director of Cultural Arts Krista Blackwood.

The JCC production will likely be a regional premier for the mega hit -- the first locally produced and cast, complete version in the Kansas City area. The licensing company only recently began offering community theaters a chance to obtain the rights, and Blackwood said she couldn't get her application sent fast enough.

"Landing Les Misérables for White Theatre is a huge coup for the JCC," Blackwood said. "Les Mis at the White Theatre will be a must see for 2013-2014. We're proud to be able to highlight the vast and deep pool of local talent in the Kansas City area with such amazing material in such a wonderful venue."

Based on Victor Hugo's classic novel, Les Misérables is an epic and uplifting story about the survival of the human spirit. The magnificent score includes the classic songs "I Dreamed a Dream," "On My Own," "Stars," "Bring Him Home," "Do You Hear the People Sing?," "One Day More," "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables," "Master Of The House" and many more.

Les Misérables opened in London in 1985 and has been running ever since. It played Broadway for 6,680 performances from 1987 through 2003 and again from 2006 to 2008, and has played in 42 countries in 21 languages.

But the licensing company has never opened up the rights to community theaters.

Until now.

Last week, the White Theatre at the Jewish Community Center was granted the right to do the full-blown, Broadway version of Les Misérables in November 2013.

A touring production of Les Misérables will play the Music Hall in Kansas City this December but the White Theatre's show will be the first production in the Kansas City area to use all local talent.

"There's a school edition of the musical that has been out for a while but a full-scale Les Miserables has not yet been locally produced in the Kansas City area. We'll be the first," says Jewish Community Center's Director of Cultural Arts, Krista Blackwood.
