BLACK COWBOY IN THE OLD WEST
(World Premiere)
In the 1800's, the American frontier drew many black men and women hungry for the freedom to chart their own destiny; the freedom seldom found in the segregated North and the Jim Crow South. According to many historical reports, about one-fourth of all cowboys were black. They served as cattle-drovers, ranch hands, cooks, and ropers, and in many other occupations throughout the plains and beyond. They founded black townships such as Nicodemus, Kansas, Langston City, Oklahoma and Allensworth, California. Some black cowboys were famous and some were infamous, but all were integral to painting the true picture of the American frontier.

Danny Cox, well-known songwriter and folksinger, joins with TYA Artistic Director Gene Mackey to pay tribute to the black cowboy's spirited heritage with a new musical theater production. The play weaves a spellbinding and colorful tale of the late nineteenth century black cowboys of the United States, and commemorates their history; their compelling stories; and celebrates their contributions to the Old West. Included in the program is a chance for the audience to sing along with Danny.
