Calendar Alert: July Happenings at Starlight Theatre

July is when the activity picks up at Starlight Theatre. The following Broadway shows, concerts, classes and camps will take place during the month of July. For more information, visit kcstarlight.com.

BROADWAY SHOWS
Four shows remain in Starlight Theatre's 63rd Season: Flashdance-The Musical, Disney's The Little Mermaid, Footloose and Miss Saigon. Tickets to each show are now on sale for $10 - $85 at kcstarlight.com, by calling 816-363-STAR (7827) or in person at Starlight Theatre, 4600 Starlight Road. Box Office hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Group discounts are also available by contacting groups@kcstarlight.com.

July 9-14: Flashdance-The Musical. Flashdance tells the story of a working-class girl from Pittsburgh with a dream of becoming a professional dancer. Alex Owens works by day as a steel mill welder, and a bar dancer at night while aspiring to be accepted at a prestigious ballet academy. Alex's romance with her boss Nick Hurley shows her the meaning of love and drives her ambition to pursue her dream.
July 9 - Opening Night and Singles Night. Bachelors and bachelorettes receive special seating and group discount price ($25) to the performance, entry to a pre-show Singles gathering hosted by Don Davidson; and a private backstage tour. Email stacey.million@kcstarlight.com
July 11 - Young Professionals Night. Young professionals receive a pre-show Happy Hour, special seating and group ticket discount price to the performance. Email stacey.million@kcstarlight.com
July 13 - Performance will be described for the blind and visually impaired by Kansas Audio-Reader Network.
July 14 - Performance will be interpreted for the deaf and hard-of-hearing.

July 23-28: Disney's The Little Mermaid. In a magical kingdom beneath the sea, the beautiful young mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. Based on one of Hans Christian Anderson's most beloved stories, The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. The score features the classic songs: "Part of Your World," "Kiss the Girl," and the Academy Award-winning "Under the Sea." Under the Sea Pre-Show Festival. 6-7:45 p.m. nightly. Children and their families may attend this free pre-show festival, which includes: Ariel's Treasure Find, cartoonists, a costume contest, a fishing booth, hands-on art projects, photo opportunities, goodies and more.
July 24 and 27 – Girl Scout Night. Girls Scouts receive special seating, a group discount and a Starlight Theatre patch.
July 25 - Young Professionals Night. Young professionals can volunteer at the "Under the Sea Pre-Show Festival" before the show, special seating and group ticket discount price to the performance. Email stacey.million@kcstarlight.com

CONCERTS
Starlight is bringing musical talent to Kansas City this year with its 2013 Capitol Federal Concert Series. For more information, visit kcstarlight.com.

July 2: 311 with Cypress Hill and G Love and Special Sauce. This marks the 11th consecutive summer that 311 has headlined amphitheatres with their summer Unity Tour. 311's celebratory live shows and hybrid sound have earned them a massive grassroots following and a catalog of modern rock hits including "Down," "All Mixed Up," and "Amber."

July 5 at 5p: Mix 93.3'S Red White & Boom with Carly Rae Jepsen, Ariana Grande, Emblem 3, MKTO, Hot Chelle Rae, and Stefano Langone. Carly Rae Jepsen burst onto the U.S. music scene in 2012 with the #1 hit single and now award-winning "Call Me Maybe."

July 19: A Prairie Home Companion. A Prairie Home Companion's Radio Romance Tour 2013 hits the road coast-to-coast this summer, starring host and writer Garrison Keillor, singer Aoife O'Donovan, comedian Fred Newman, Rich Dworsky and The Guy's All-Star Shoe Band with guitarist Pat Donohue and violinist/mandolinist Richard Kriehn.

July 20: Train with Michael Franti. Multi-platinum band Train has made its mark on music history with the Grammy Award-winning song "Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me)" and chart-topping singles "Meet Virginia" and "Calling All Angels." Train's newest album, California 37, was released in April and features the hit single "Drive By."

CLASSES AND CAMPS
July 2: Acting the Song Master Class for Grades 5-8 and 9-10. Participants will learn to bring the character of song to life. Each participant will work with teaching artists Andy Parkhurst and Michael Grayman, co-founders of Spinning Tree Theatre in Kansas City and directors and choreographers of several productions for Starlight Children's Theatre. The students will solidify their presentation. Students must prepare up two songs of 32 bars each with music (accompanist provided). The 5th-8th grade session will be from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., and the 9th – 10th grade session will be from 1:30 – 5 p.m. For more information, visit kcstarlight.com, email Andy.Pierce@kcsttarlight.com, or call 816-997-1134.

July 8-12 and 15-19: Act Like an Animal Camp for Ages 5-10. This two-week, full-day Act Like An Animal Camp for 5- to 10-year-olds will find campers spending half the day exploring the world of the Kansas City Zoo through hands-on interaction with animals, games, tours, stories and crafts. The other half of the day is spent at Starlight where campers participate in an energetic drama class and learn specialized theatre skills, including storytelling, movement and music. Toward the end of the camp, parents and friends will view their camper's art work displayed in an art exhibit format and watch their little ones perform in a culminating performance! ABOUT STARLIGHT THEATRE
Starlight Theatre opened in 1951 and is the largest and oldest performing arts organization in Kansas City and the second largest outdoor producing theatre in the country.
