This performance will feature six works, four of which are world premieres. "Journey In," choreographed by Artistic Director, Karen Mareck Grundy, was originally set on Giordano Jazz Dane Chicago in the summer of 2010. When setting it on the dancers of MCB, Grundy made changes to the choreography, including having the women dance en pointe. As understood by the title, this piece reflects Grundy's journey in life. The three sections of the piece represent the different important people in her life, the loves of her life, and a celebration of her life as it is today, respectively. Grundy worked in collaboration with Kevin Mileski, a musician from Chicago, on an original composition for this piece.
Grundy has also choreographed a world premiere, entitled "Swimming with Sharks." This piece is danced by the six women of MCB. Tom Andes, a local musician of Columbia, MO, composed an original musical work for this piece. A second premiere, also choreographed by Grundy, will be a trio danced to an original musical composition by Travis McFarlane.
A third premiere was choreographed by Autumn Eckman. MCB commissioned this Chicago-based choreographer to create a piece exclusively for the company. The fourth premiere was choreographed by Choreographer-in-Residence, Shannon Lee West. Also choreographed by West in 2010, Cariño travels through the four themes of love: lust, obsession, attachment, and entanglement. These themes were inspired by the work of anthropologist, Helen Fisher.
