ESU Theatre's spring season begins with laughs with a new
adaptation of Georges Feydeau's bedroom farce, The Ladies
Man. The playwright Charles Morey provides a script loosely
and freely translated from Feydeau's Tailler Pour Dames. Loved
by critics from all over it has been called "A wickedly funny
French farce…" by the Berkshire Fine Arts and "…. a comic
minefield…" by the Indianapolis Star. The Wall Street Journal said
"…I can't recall the last time I laughed this hard…" another critic
warns "…. be prepared to laugh so hard your sides will hurt."
In the play, Dr. Molineaux (Andrew Walker, Junior, Wichita) is
impotent, but his wife, Yvonne (Aubrey Near, Sophomore,
Independence), thinks his lack of performance must be due to
his infidelity. The doctor, recently married to his beautiful, young
wife, cannot admit his problem, however, and lies about it,
arousing her suspicions further. That one lie sets off a chain of
misunderstandings involving everyone from his servants, Etienne
(Brandon Jensen, Sophomore, Salina) and Marie (Chandler
Archer-McGinnis, Freshman, Topeka), to his patients Bassinet
(Casey McCabe, Senior, Gardner) and Gustav (Adam Helmer,
Sophomore, Emporia) and Suzanne Aubin (Amy Dunlap, Junior,
Wylie, TX), and of course, to his mother-in-law (Annie
Rosenbrook, Junior, Merriam).
The Ladies Man, directed by Teresa Mitchell, is sure to please all
audiences, but may contain some material not suitable for
children under the age of 10. Containing the much-loved
theatrical elements audiences have come to associate with farce,
this show is balanced with hilarious, yet believable human
beings, who are, as in life, a bit messy and unpredictable.
Designers include faculty members Ron Fowlkes (Set) and Susan
Mai (Costumes). Senior Chris Peterson from Rose Hill designs the
Lighting with guidance from Nancy Pontius, faculty designer.
Senior Ross Rundell (Salina) is the show's Technical Director.
The Production Stage Manager is Danielle Roberts (Junior) from
Cherryvale. The Assistant Stage Manager is Jessica Gaddis
(Senior) from Ulysses.
Performances for The Ladies Man are Wednesday, March 7
through Saturday, March 10, at 7:30 pm in the Karl C. Bruder
Theatre in King Hall at Emporia State University. Tickets are
available at the University Box Office or by calling 620-341-
6378.
