The Selma Stories

The Selma Stories: Women of Courage is an original play written by Dr. Velicia Daniels, Theatre Director at Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts. The play is a multi-media, interdisciplinary play that focuses on some of the women who were foot soldiers during the Civil Rights Movement, particularly during the voting rights marches from Selma to Montgomery in 1965. Dr. Daniels conducted interviews with many of the women (and some men) who participated in or witnessed these marches. These interviews have been transcribed, edited, and used as verbatim monologues to construct a theatrical exploration of one moment in the Civil Rights Movement. The Selma Stories: Women of Courage will be performed in Paseo Academy's Main Theatre on Wednesday, March 7th (the anniversary of "Bloody Sunday") and Thursday, March 8th at 7:00pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and will be sold at the door. For more information call: 816-418-7775. KC Stage cardmembers receive a disco!

Young Mozart is offered as one of the selections of the Folly Kids' Series and the Friends of Chamber Music Educational Series. This whimsically entertaining and educational tale is primarily targeted at children from grades through 3rd through 6th.

Flying and Falling: Investigating Improvisational Matters - A Modern Dance Workshop for everyone! - THIS Saturday

Flying and Falling: Investigating Improvisational Matters

A Modern Dance Workshop -
Part of our Winter Workshop Series for Adults

Using the support of the breath as the foundation for movement, students will access their strength, agility, balance, and flexibility
through invigorating, full bodied dancing. Drawing on contemporary improvisational practices, students will have the opportunity to
experience a sense of flight and momentum in their dancing. Students will learn to move in and out of the floor, and then up into the
air with power and grace. By investigating one's own movement potential, students will cultivate mindfulness, creative expression,
and spontaneity in their dancing. The development of individual presence and awareness of the dynamics of ensemble will be
emphasized throughout the class. This class will strive to build a community of dancers who celebrate taking risks, exploring the
unknown, and openly communicating with one another as we practice the various forms of improvisational dance in a physical,
creative, and fun environment that fosters self-expression through kinesthetic experience.

No previous experience in dance is necessary to join this class. All levels and abilities are welcome.

Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition

UNION STATION, KANSAS CITY HOSTS THE DRAMATIC STORY OF TITANIC ON THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF ITS VOYAGE.
On April 15, 1912, Titanic, the world's largest ship, sank after colliding with an iceberg claiming more than 1,500 lives and subsequently altering the world's confidence in modern technology. 100 years later, Union Station Kansas City will pay tribute to the tragedy which continues to resonate through Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, where more than 300 legendary artifacts conserved from the Ship's debris field is showcased offering visitors a poignant look at this iconic ship and its passengers.
"We are pleased Kansas City was selected as the location to host Titanic for the 100th anniversary of the ship's voyage," said George Guastello, president and CEO of Union Station. "Union Station has been Kansas City's home for exciting exhibitions in recent years and our staff looks forward to providing an unforgettable experience with this incredible offering."
The Exhibition has been designed with a focus on the legendary RMS Titanic's compelling human stories, as best told through authentic artifacts and extensive room re-creations. Perfume from a maker who was traveling to New York to sell his samples, china etched with the logo of the elite White Star Line and many other authentic objects offer haunting, emotional connections to lives abruptly ended or forever altered. Visitors are quickly drawn back in time to 1912 upon entrance, as each receives a replica boarding pass of an actual passenger aboard Titanic. They then begin their chronological journey through the life of the Titanic, moving through the ship's construction, to life on board, to the illfated sinking and amazing artifact rescue efforts. They will marvel at the re-created stair case, and press their palms against an iceberg while learning of countless stories of heroism and humanity.
One of the many galleries will be dedicated to local connections, where visitors can learn about how the sinking of the great ship strongly resonated in Kansas City. In the "Memorial Gallery" guests will take their boarding pass to the memorial wall and discover whether their passenger and traveling companions survived or perished.
Over the past 15 years, more than 22 million people have seen this powerful exhibition in major museums worldwide - from Chicago to Los Angeles and Paris to London. RMS Titanic, Inc. is the only company permitted by law to recover objects from the wreck of the Titanic. The Company was granted Salvor-in-Possession rights to the wreck site of Titanic by a United States Federal court in 1994 and has conducted seven research and recovery expeditions to the Titanic rescuing more than 5,500 artifacts.

February 18-25, 2012
BLACK COWBOY IN THE OLD WEST
(World Premiere)
In the 1800's, the American frontier drew many black men and women hungry for the freedom to chart their own destiny; the freedom seldom found in the segregated North and the Jim Crow South. According to many historical reports, about one-fourth of all cowboys were black. They served as cattle-drovers, ranch hands, cooks, and ropers, and in many other occupations throughout the plains and beyond. They founded black townships such as Nicodemus, Kansas, Langston City, Oklahoma and Allensworth, California. Some black cowboys were famous and some were infamous, but all were integral to painting the true picture of the American frontier.

Danny Cox, well-known songwriter and folksinger, joins with TYA Artistic Director Gene Mackey to pay tribute to the black cowboy's spirited heritage with a new musical theater production. The play weaves a spellbinding and colorful tale of the late nineteenth century black cowboys of the United States, and commemorates their history; their compelling stories; and celebrates their contributions to the Old West. Included in the program is a chance for the audience to sing along with Danny.

Missouri Contemporary Ballet to Perform at the Liberty Performing Arts Theatre

Missouri Contemporary Ballet (MCB) will be touring to Liberty, MO and performing at the Liberty Performing Arts Theatre on Friday, March 30th at 7:00pm.

This performance will feature six works, four of which are world premieres. "Journey In," choreographed by Artistic Director, Karen Mareck Grundy, was originally set on Giordano Jazz Dane Chicago in the summer of 2010. When setting it on the dancers of MCB, Grundy made changes to the choreography, including having the women dance en pointe. As understood by the title, this piece reflects Grundy's journey in life. The three sections of the piece represent the different important people in her life, the loves of her life, and a celebration of her life as it is today, respectively. Grundy worked in collaboration with Kevin Mileski, a musician from Chicago, on an original composition for this piece.

Grundy has also choreographed a world premiere, entitled "Swimming with Sharks." This piece is danced by the six women of MCB. Tom Andes, a local musician of Columbia, MO, composed an original musical work for this piece. A second premiere, also choreographed by Grundy, will be a trio danced to an original musical composition by Travis McFarlane.

A third premiere was choreographed by Autumn Eckman. MCB commissioned this Chicago-based choreographer to create a piece exclusively for the company. The fourth premiere was choreographed by Choreographer-in-Residence, Shannon Lee West. Also choreographed by West in 2010, Cariño travels through the four themes of love: lust, obsession, attachment, and entanglement. These themes were inspired by the work of anthropologist, Helen Fisher.

Tickets are $17-$25 for adults, $12-$20 for seniors, students, and children 12 and under when you purchase in advance. There will be a $3 price increase for tickets purchased at the door. They can be purchased at the Liberty Performing Arts Theatre Box Office, 816-439-4362. Visit www.LPAT.org for more information about tickets.

MCB is offering a Master Class taught by Artistic Director, Karen Mareck Grundy on Thursday, March 29th from 6:00-7:30pm. The class will be contemporary, held at The Studio – Liberty Dance and Glee. 912 W. Liberty Drive, Liberty, MO 64068. The cost is $25 per person. Call 573-219-7134 or email info@missouricontemporaryballet.com to reserve your spot!

LAST OF THE RED HOT LOVERS AT CORBIN

Barney Cashman wanted women in the worst way, and that's how he got them. Corbin Theatre's Last of the Red Hot Lovers brings a Neil Simon comedy favorite to the stage Feb. 16-18, 23-25 at 7:30 p.m. The Samuel French production, sponsored by Liberty's WynBrick Center, brings four new faces to the theatre on Liberty's Historic Square, 15 N. Water Street.

Middle-aged and married, overworked and overweight, Barney Chasman, played by Bill Pelletier, wants to join the sexual revolution before it's too late and arranges three seductions. The first, Elaine Navazio played by Wanda Morris, proved to be a foul-mouthed bundle of neuroses who likes cigarettes, whiskey, and other women's husbands. Bobbi Michele, played by Megan Biven, is a 20-ish actress who is too kooky for words. Finally comes Jeanette Fisher, played by Kimi Worstell-Laabs, who is a gloomy, depressed housewife who just happens to be married to Barney's best friend.

Kimi Worstell-Laabs makes her Corbin directorial debut with Suzanne Axon serving as stage manager. Deb Funkhouser is producing the play.

Tickets for the local production are just $10 per person and can be obtained online at the Corbin Theatre Company website,http://corbintheatre.org, at Crybaby Farms Gifts & Designs, 9 N. Water St., just two doors down from the theatre on the Liberty Square, or at the door the night of the performance. Doors open at 7 p.m. Please follow Corbin Theatre Company on Facebook or through Twitter, @CorbinTheatre.

More information regarding the play's sponsor, The WynBrick Center, 1701 Wynbrick Dr., Liberty, Mo. can be obtained on their website at http://www.wynbrickcenter.com or by calling (816) 792-4325.

The original Broadway production of Last of the Red Hot Lovers, directed by Robert Moore, opened on December 28, 1969 at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre in New York City, where it ran for 706 performances. The original cast included James Coco, Linda Lavin (as Elaine), Doris Roberts (as Jeannette), and Marcia Rodd (as Bobbi). The play, Coco, Lavin, and Moore all were nominated for Tony Awards.

The Crucible Press Release

Belton High School's Drama Department is proud to present The Crucible by Arthur Miller. Winner of the Tony Award for "Best Play," The Crucible is an ageless tale of fear, greed, and power written by one of the greatest American playwrights.

When teenage girls are discovered trying to conjure spirits, the 17th century town of Salem explodes with accusations of witchcraft. The vicious trials that follow expose a community paralyzed by terror, religious extremism, greed, and a marriage forever changed.

The Crucible challenges our notions of good and evil. Written as a metaphor for the 1950's McCarthy trials, The Crucible was an attempt to expose the madness being conducted by the House on Un-American Activities Committee during the Second Red Scare, resulting in the demise of so many lives, careers and reputations in Hollywood.

Belton High School's The Crucible will be presented Feb. 16-18th at 7pm and Feb. 19th at 2pm in the High School Forum Theatre. Tickets are $5 for students and $6 for adults.
Tickets may be purchased in advance through our website at www.beltondramaboosters.org. For additional ticket information call Tabatha Babcock at (816)-348-2721.

Script synopsis:
Married couples David and Cathy Larson and Brad
and Beth Youngquist live with their children in
the relatively peaceful town of Pine City,
Minnesota. David and Beth, after years of
maintaining a platonic relationship, begin an
adulterous affair with disastrous consequences.
Through a series of scenes which all take place on
or around a single bed, we see the painfully
intense real time unraveling of both marriages
and, eventually, the construction of a very
fragile but authentic new beginning for everyone
concerned.

"Do not be deceived by the lyrical, gently
perfumed title of Craig Wright's play. This is a
brutally honest drama about marriage and
infidelity - one that chronicles the inevitable
big damage and ugly fallout engendered by a
ceaseless pursuit of selfishness and an
unrestrained search for personal happiness. An
emotionally and physically lacerating ordeal, it
is at once fiercely adult, shrewdly observant,
often painfully graphic and most definitely not
for the meek." - The Chicago Sun-Times

does not approve of teachers offering friendship and compassion
over the discipline she feels students need in order to face the
harsh world. When she suspects a new priest (Noah Mefford,
Senior, Burlington) of sexually abusing a student, she is faced
with the prospect of charging him with unproven allegations and
possibly destroying his career as well as her own. To help build
her case, she asks for help from an idealistic young nun (Natalie
King, Junior, Wichita). Also included in the cast is the alleged
victim's mother. Mrs. Mueller played by Sophomore Whitney
Steinike from Wilson, KS.

Doubt is under the direction of Dr. Jim Ryan. Senior Ross
Rundell (Salina) is the shows set designer with assistance from
faculty member Nancy Pontius, while senior Lindsey Jarvis (Paola)
will be designing the costumes and senior Trinity Standridge
(Olathe) is designing hair and makeup. The Production's Stage
Manager is Senior Thomas Govert from Arkansas City, KS, with
assistance from Freshman Sertrice Grice from Wamego, KS.

Doubt leaves much for the audience to consider after the curtain
falls. What exactly is the nature of doubt vs. certainty. One of
the contemporary theatre's most produced works, Doubt was
adapted into a screenplay and became a feature film starring
Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Amy Adams in 2008.
Performances for Doubt are Wednesday, April 4 through
Saturday, April 7 and again the following Wednesday, April 11
through Saturday, April 14, at 7:30 pm in the Ronald Q.
Frederickson Theatre in Roosevelt Hall at Emporia State
University. Tickets are available at the University Box Office or
by call 620-341-6378.

"The Ladies Man" Press Release

ESU Theatre presents its 2012 Winter Production

"The Ladies Man" by Charles Morey
English Adaptation of an 1886 Bedroom Farce by Georges
Feydeau

March 7-10, 2012 at 7:30 pm

Karl C. Bruder Theatre in King Hall
Emporia State University

ESU Theatre's spring season begins with laughs with a new
adaptation of Georges Feydeau's bedroom farce, The Ladies
Man. The playwright Charles Morey provides a script loosely
and freely translated from Feydeau's Tailler Pour Dames. Loved
by critics from all over it has been called "A wickedly funny
French farce…" by the Berkshire Fine Arts and "…. a comic
minefield…" by the Indianapolis Star. The Wall Street Journal said
"…I can't recall the last time I laughed this hard…" another critic
warns "…. be prepared to laugh so hard your sides will hurt."
In the play, Dr. Molineaux (Andrew Walker, Junior, Wichita) is
impotent, but his wife, Yvonne (Aubrey Near, Sophomore,
Independence), thinks his lack of performance must be due to
his infidelity. The doctor, recently married to his beautiful, young
wife, cannot admit his problem, however, and lies about it,
arousing her suspicions further. That one lie sets off a chain of
misunderstandings involving everyone from his servants, Etienne
(Brandon Jensen, Sophomore, Salina) and Marie (Chandler
Archer-McGinnis, Freshman, Topeka), to his patients Bassinet
(Casey McCabe, Senior, Gardner) and Gustav (Adam Helmer,
Sophomore, Emporia) and Suzanne Aubin (Amy Dunlap, Junior,
Wylie, TX), and of course, to his mother-in-law (Annie
Rosenbrook, Junior, Merriam).

The Ladies Man, directed by Teresa Mitchell, is sure to please all
audiences, but may contain some material not suitable for
children under the age of 10. Containing the much-loved
theatrical elements audiences have come to associate with farce,
this show is balanced with hilarious, yet believable human
beings, who are, as in life, a bit messy and unpredictable.
Designers include faculty members Ron Fowlkes (Set) and Susan
Mai (Costumes). Senior Chris Peterson from Rose Hill designs the
Lighting with guidance from Nancy Pontius, faculty designer.
Senior Ross Rundell (Salina) is the show's Technical Director.
The Production Stage Manager is Danielle Roberts (Junior) from
Cherryvale. The Assistant Stage Manager is Jessica Gaddis
(Senior) from Ulysses.

Performances for The Ladies Man are Wednesday, March 7
through Saturday, March 10, at 7:30 pm in the Karl C. Bruder
Theatre in King Hall at Emporia State University. Tickets are
available at the University Box Office or by calling 620-341-
