Emporia State University Summer Theatre Opens Season 59 with
BINGO! The Winning Musical
The 59th season of ESU Summer Theatre opens Wednesday June
12, 2013 with Bingo! The Winning Musical. A musical comedy by
Michael Heitzman, Ilene Reid, and David Holcenberg, the show is
suitable for all ages. Audiences will be laughing in the aisles
when they aren't playing Bingo along with the cast for prizes
provided by local merchants!
The loveable characters will stop at nothing to participate in their
weekly Bingo game. Vern (Marah Melvin, Senior, Iola), Honey
(Madison Hoge, Junior, University of Nebraska- Kearney) and
Patsy (Lauren Smith, Junior, University of Central Missouri) gather
for the yearly celebration of the birth of Bingo and its founder,
Edwin S. Lowe. When a storm knocks out power at the Bingo Hall,
Patsy and Honey remind each other of a night that began in the
same way fifteen years ago.
In flashback, Honey tells us about the night Vern and Bernice
(Alum Erin Gilmore, Emporia) had a falling out. Her daughter
Alison (Miranda Nation, Sophomore, Winfield) enters the Bingo
hall in disguise in an attempt to bring Vern and her mother back
together. Supporting performers are John Lloyd Stafford III
(Sophomore, Drury University), Andrew McCutcheon (Junior,
Gardener), Landon Noll (Junior, Winchester) and Mack Melvin
(Junior, Iola).
Bingo! The Winning Musical is under the direction of Jim and
Lindy Bartruff. Alums Anna Ryan and Emily Kasprzak return, as
music director and costume designer. Emily is now the Director
of Theatre at Neosho Community College. May 2013 grad Noah
Mefford (Burlington) is the Lighting Designer. Junior Mark
Warner (Senior, Salina) and Jim Bartruff collaborated to design
the set. Lexey Jost (Senior, Hutchinson) is the propmaster and
Senior Samaria Fleig (Emporia) is the production stage manager.
Bingo! The Winning Musical will be presented at the Karl C.
Bruder Theatre June 12th through June 15th. Performances
begin at 7:30 p.m. Individual tickets and season passes are
available from the university box office at 620-341-6378.
