THE MUSICAL ADVENTURES OF FLAT STANLEY
October 9 through November 10, 2012
The beloved children's book was written by Jeff Brown in 1964 and has become a literary and pop cultural phenomenon, delighting readers and travelers all around the world with this delightful two-dimensional hero. Lambchop is your ordinary, every day, run-of the-mill ten-year old until one night the bulletin board on the wall above Stanley's bed comes loose and falls right on top of Stanley. The next morning, Stanley Lambchop wakes up flat. Not just flat…really, REALLY flat! In a whirlwind musical travelogue, Stanley--the ultimate exchange student--scours the globe for a solution to his unusual problem. The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley has lyrics by Timothy Allen McDonald and Jonathan K. Waller; music by David Weinstein, Timothy Allen McDonald, Jonathan K. Waller and Stephen Gabriel; and Timothy Allen McDonald wrote the book.
JUNIE B. JONES IN JINGLE BELLS, BATMAN SMELLS
November 20 through December 29, 2012
One of the most requested shows by TYA's patrons, Junie B. Jones in Jingle Bells, Batman Smells returns to the City Stage for the holiday season. Based on Barbara Parks' Junie B. Jones books and adapted for the stage by Allison Gregory, this is a sparkling musical featuring Junie B. Jones, a first grader who is funny, silly, lovable, but irreverent. It's holiday time and Room One is doing a lot of happy things to celebrate—like making elf costumes and singing joyful songs. Tattletale May keeps ruining Junie's holiday glee until Junie learns an important lesson about the joy of giving.
BULLY BOT THE ROBOT AND THE GANG OF GEEKS
January 22 through January 31, 2013
Created by local playwright Gene Mackey, TYA's Artistic Director, for Theatre for Young America, in cooperation with The Whole Person and VSA Missouri, this play addresses the problem of bullying, including the particular kinds of bullying the disabled encounter. Three best friends who share a love of computers, games and imagination meet once a week to chew over the world's problems. They affectionately describe themselves as a gang of geeks. The gang decides to solve the problem of bullying. One of the three suggests using role-playing, but the Chief Geek has a better idea. Use a robot. This show will be available for tour from late January through February.
ANANSI THE SPIDER AND THE MIDDLE PASSAGE
February 16 through February 23, 2013
This play by renowned Missouri playwright Frank Higgins features the celebrated spider from African folklore. Under heart-breaking circumstances, Anansi's stories bolster the spirits of a mother and daughter who have been kidnapped from their African homeland. Anansi's inventiveness, vitality and enterprising character fortify them during this frightful "middle passage" by bringing the bright and spirited folklore of Africa along for their harrowing journey.
CHICKEN LITTLE
March 5 through April 13, 2013
This short folk-tale of the chicken that created an unnecessary and hilarious panic when he proclaims, "the sky is falling," has been expanded into a delightfully manic musical. Theatre for Young America's Artistic Director, Gene Mackey, who wrote the book and lyrics, and Cheryl Benge, who wrote the music, combined their creative talents to present a delightful version of the story of Chicken Little, Henny Penny, Cocky Locky, Goosey Poosey, and Foxy Woxy. This play is a favorite with Kansas City audiences and also has been produced innumerable times by other theaters across the country.
GO, DOG. GO!
April 23 through May 18, 2013
Go, Dog. Go! uses much of the dialogue and illustrations of author P. D. Eastman's classic children's book of the same name. The stage-play, which takes place in a world where dogs are involved in car chases, perform circus tricks and dance, was adapted by Roberta Wilhelm for the Omaha Theater Company for Young People and was developed under the auspices of the Estate of P.D. Eastman. Kids will be dazzled by the frenetic pace and enjoy the play's faithfulness to the book.
TBA
June 11 through June 29, 2012

Second Weekend of The Laramie Project
Call the reservation line at 913-682-7557 to reserve your tickets.
In October 1998 a twenty-one-year-old student at the University of Wyoming was kidnapped, severely beaten and left to die, tied to a fence in the middle of the prairie outside Laramie, Wyoming. His bloody, bruised and battered body was not discovered until the next day, and he died several days later in an area hospital. His name was Matthew Shepard, and he was the victim of this assault because he was gay.
Moisés Kaufman and fellow members of the Tectonic Theater Project made six trips to Laramie over the course of a year and a half in the aftermath of the beating and during the trial of the two young men accused of killing Shepard. They conducted more than 200 interviews with the people of the town. Some people interviewed were directly connected to the case, and others were citizens of Laramie, and the breadth of their reactions to the crime is fascinating. Kaufman and Tectonic Theater members have constructed a deeply moving theatrical experience from these interviews and their own experiences.
THE LARAMIE PROJECT is a breathtaking theatrical collage that explores the depths to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion of which we are capable.
The Leavenworth Performing Arts Center, 500 Delaware St, (913) 682-7557, www.rccplv.com
Performances will be April 27, 28 May 4 and 5 at 8 p.m., and a matinee on April 29 at 2 p.m.

Story of the Play
The play is set in Truvy's beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are "anybody" come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town's rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, ("I'm not crazy, I've just been in a bad mood for forty years"); an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M'Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a "good ole boy." Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act, the spunky Shelby (who is a diabetic) risks pregnancy. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength—and love—which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to m!
ake them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.

trip through Europe they never took together and

Waltz has earned a prominent place in the canon of

Sacred Geometrix at the H & R Block City Stage Theater at Union Station.
CONTACT: Andrea Skowronek, Artistic Co-Director (816) 210-1192 cell or andreaskowronek@yahoo.com
City in Motion Dance Theater will present its professional company concert, entitled Sacred Geometrix, on Friday, April 27; Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29, 2012 at the H & R Block City Stage Theater at Union Station.
Sacred Geometrix refers both to the sacred act of artistic creation and the linear and curved shapes in space formed by the human body. The concert will feature new choreography for the professional dance company by artistic co-directors Andrea Skowronek, Dale Fellin and Stephanie Whittler as well as dances by company members Amanda January, Ann Shaughnessy and Tuesday Faust.
Andrea Skowronek will premiere Fractals, for six dancers in three sections set to music by Steve Reich. Fractals are "rough or fragmented geometric shapes that can be split into parts, each of which is a reduced-size copy of the whole". While fractals are a mathematical construct, their patterns are found in nature, which has inspired their inclusion in artwork. Ms. Skowronek uses repetition, coupling, theme & variation and the manipulation of patterns and shapes in this evocative new work.
Dale Fellin's dance, Anudu,, with tribal, didgeridoo music by Ash Dargan, premiered at
A Modern Night at the Folly on February 18, 2012. "Physical, musical, and thrilling, Anudu brought down the house." David Ollington, kcactive.com
Mr. Fellin will also present a trio entitled Siamo, with music by Deru. Siamo explores the beauty and drama of both form and shape through the process of construction and deconstruction.
A duet, (as yet untitled) by Mr. Fellin with music by Vittorio Grigolo will provide a voyeuristic journey into the workings of male and female energies.
Stephanie Whittler will present her trio, Dysmorphia, with the quiet passion and anguished lyricism of the British rock band Placebo. The dancer's movements express emotional struggles, desperation and the occasional blur of reality.
Ms. Whittler will also present a group piece for six dancers entitled Steel Dreams, with music composed by Benoit Jutras from Cirque du Soleil – Quidam.
Amanda January will premiere Parts of Sleep, a group piece in three sections with music by Jobim, Nick Van Bloss, and Chris Brubeck. This lighthearted work explores insomnia, dreams, and the altered state that teeters between sleeping and waking.
Ann Shaughnessy will perform her solo, Bi'Ann, with Celtic music by Kila. This athletic tour d'force premiered at the Fringe Festival in July 2011.
Tuesday Faust will present a new duet inspired by her recent honeymoon in Italy.
City in Motion Dance Theater's Sacred Geometrix will be presented on Friday, April 27 and Saturday, April 28 at 8:00 PM and Sunday, April 29 at 2:00 PM at the H & R Block City Stage Theater at Union Station located at 30 West Pershing Road, Kansas City, MO 64108. A silent auction will take place on Saturday, April 28 in the lobby. Tickets for Sacred Geometrix are $18 in advance, $15 for students, seniors, and Union Station members, $10 for children 12 and under, and $20 at the door. Advance tickets are available by calling the Union Station Box Office at 816-460-2020 or online at www.unionstation.org.
Financial assistance for this project has been provided by the Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund, the Muriel McBrien Kauffman Foundation, the Arts KC Fund, and the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.

to a brother who died of AIDS in 1989. A fever
dream in a hospital waiting room imagines the wild
trip through Europe they never took together and
eventually leads to the very human act of coming
to terms with the death of a loved one. Winner of
the 1992 OBIE award for best new play, Baltimore
Waltz has earned a prominent place in the canon of
plays dealing with HIV and AIDS.
Directed by Ian Crawford.

Almost, Maine... Opens tomorrow!
Almost, Maine
by John Cariani
Thursday, April 12th thru Saturday, April 14th at 7:00pm
On a cold, clear, moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, Almost's residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend—almost—in this delightful midwinter night's dream.
Playwright John Cariani says: "This play is about one moment in time—what happens to people in a heartbeat. It is a play about people who are really, truly, honestly dealing with the toughest thing there is to deal with in life — love."
…a whimsical approach to the joys and perils of romance. Magical happenings bloom beneath the snowdrifts."
- N.Y. Times
"A snowy charmer…These nine tales of love in the time of frostbite have a winning glow that proves surprisingly contagious."
- N.Y. Sun
Directed by Kelly Michale.

Reservation Line Open for The Laramie Project
Kaufman
and Tectonic Theater members have constructed a deeply moving theatrical experience from these interviews and their own experiences.
THE LARAMIE PROJECT is a breathtaking theatrical collage that explores the depths to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion of which we are capable.
