Emporia State University Theatre presents Boeing Boeing
Emporia State University Theatre presents Boeing Boeing, a
French farce adapted for the English-speaking stage. Revived on
Broadway in 2008 in a Tony-winning production, the farce
features Bernard (Brandon Jensen, Senior, Salina) an American
architect that resides in Paris, France. When Bernard's best pal,
Robert (John Lloyd Stafford III, Junior, Independence) comes for a
visit, Bernard divulges that he is engaged to marry three different
women.
The women are Gloria (Lisa Prater, Junior, Derby), Gabriella (Kylie
Geiman, Junior, Louisburg), and Gretchen (Alayne Weber,
Freshman, Topeka). Each fiancée is an airline hostess with
frequent layovers; Gloria works for TWA, Gabriella works for Air
Italia, and Gretchen works for Lufthansa. But when Boeing
introduces a new, faster jet, all of the hostesses find themselves
in Bernard's apartment at the same time, leaving Bernard and
Robert to deal with the consequences. Housekeeper Bertha
(Chandler Archer-McGinnis, Topeka) tries to keep "the house in
order" to great comic effect.
Boeing Boeing is under the Direction of Professor Theresa
Mitchell. Amanda Dura is the costume designer. Ron Fowlkes is
the set designer and senior Samaria Fleig (Emporia) is the
lighting designer. Senior Mark Warner (Salina) is the Technical
Director, and Andrew Wilson (Sophomore, Gresham, Oregon) is
the stage manager. Assistant Stage Manager is Andrew
McCutcheon (Junior, Gardner). Doug Dion is the Shop Manager.
Crewmembers include Michael Abbott (Junior, Great Bend), Paul
Ray Clements (Grad student, Abilene), Elliot Brest (Junior,
Tonganoxie), Veniese Razo (Freshman, Topeka), Kortney Foth
(Freshman, Peabody), Allyson Henry (Freshman, Salina) and
Emmanuel Cockrell (Junior, Junction City). Becca Bolerjack
(Freshman, Olathe) and Valerie Stockton (Freshman, Newton) will
serve as the costume crew for the production. Cameron Reynolds
(Freshman, Louisburg) and Landon Noll (Junior, Winchester) will
work Box Office and House Management.
Boeing Boeing was first presented February 2, 1965, at the Cort
Theatre, in New York City. Writing about the 2008 revival, The
New York Times noted that "this latest edition of a play named
for an aircraft soars right out of its time zone and into some
unpolluted stratosphere of classic physical comedy. Propelled by
the same gusty spirit that animated Commedia dell'Arte and the
silent films of Keaton, Chaplin and Lloyd..." The play is also the
basis of the popular screen comedy that starred Tony Curtis and
Jerry Lewis. The ESU production of Boeing Boeing will run March
5th – 8th at 7:30 p.m. in the Karl C. Bruder Theatre. Tickets at
$10, $9 for seniors and $5 students are available at the
University Box Office by calling (620) 341-6378.
