High School Musical Theatre Students Recognized at Starlights Eleventh Annual Blue Star Awards
Musical theatre students and instructors from area high schools gathered at Starlight Theatre last week for the Eleventh Annual Blue Star Awards. The ceremony included productions by six of the nominated high schools with presentations by local celebrity presenters and Taylor Louderman from the Broadway musical Bring It On.
Modeled after Broadway's Tony® Awards, the Blue Star Awards recognize achievement and excellence in high school musical theatre and is one of the largest of its kind in the nation. The program, sponsored by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Kansas City, annually serves approximately 5,000 area students who contribute either on the stage or behind the scenes to their schools' musical theatre productions. This year, 43 area high schools producing 50 musicals participated for a total of 116 nominees.
"It is evident that the theatrical accomplishments of all the student actors, singers, dancers, musicians, costumers, set designers, technicians and faculty involved in Starlight's Blue Star Awards continue to increase each year, " said Denton Yockey, Starlight Theatre president and executive producer. " The strength of Starlight's Blue Star Awards speaks volumes of the Kansas City community and especially of the participating high school administrators, teachers and parents. I'm proud to say that this program is one of the largest musical theatre education programs in the country."
Highlights of the Starlight's Blue Star Awards Ceremony included the presentation of the Outstanding Actor and Actress in a Lead Role: Patrick Graham from Lee's Summit North High School won for his role as Sweeney Todd in Sweeney Todd; Lily Kaufmann from Shawnee Mission East High School won for her role as Janet Van De Graaff in The Drowsy Chaperone. Graham and Kaufmann will go on to compete on a national level at the National High School Musical Theater Awards in New York City later this month.
Jordan Malone of Paola High School and Kaelyn Kreicbergs of Olathe South High School each received Rising Scholarship Awards. The $2,500 college scholarships are presented to one male and one female high school senior that have contributed the most to his or her high school theatre department and demonstrated exceptional theatrical achievement. The award for Outstanding Overall Production was presented to Olathe South High School for 13.
A panel of 22 judges attended the musical productions of each participating school during the fall 2012 and spring 2013 semesters. These judges provided performance and production critiques to Starlight's Education Department. Additionally, their comments were compiled and shared with each school's musical theatre teacher and students.
During the ceremony, Starlight presented Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City with the 2013 Star of Touring Broadway Award . This prestigious national award was just announced in New York during The Broadway League's annual conference. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City is the founding sponsor of Starlight's Blue Star Awards and is a longtime supporter of Starlight. The national Broadway League award honors those who have supported theatre and programs which help enrich the Broadway experience in their home towns.
"Starlight is grateful for the vision and financial support Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City has given to us and particularly to The Blue Star Awards program. This is a company that truly recognizes that the arts are a vital part of a healthy community," Yockey said.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
GORILLA THEATRE PRESENTS:
The Gorilla Theatre Productions will be presenting their 22nd annual Greek show on the South steps of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Saturday, June 29 and Sunday, June 30, at 7:30am.
This year's show will be a production of Aristophanes' The Knights (424 BCE). Aristophanes was a Greek comic playwright in 5th c. Athens, and what that means is a crazy plot, vicious swipes at political and social leaders, and with a lot of sex jokes. In this play, which won first prize at the Lenaea festival, Aristophanes takes on Cleon, who once sued Aristophanes for his play, The Babylonians. Aristophanes vowed revenge, and this play was that revenge. Come and watch an ancient political grudge match played out with jokes and general silliness. It's a great way to start the day, and should provide lots of fodder for water cooler discussions come Monday, July 1st.
WARNING: Parental Guidance suggested, this is -- after all -- a Greek Comedy.
The play this year will be directed by James Dean Carter & David Brisco Luby with original live music by Patrick Conway and musicians Mark Southerland and Brad Cox. Choreography of by Kosha Johnson. Neil Swanson-Chrisman is the Costume Designer and Chester White will be the Scenic and Props Designer.
Cast List: the CHORUS of the KNIGHTS: Carol Leighton, Michelle Stelting-Mauler, Marc Abelson, Bernard Norcott-Mahany & Mark Bryant. Joe Whalen as DEMOSTHENES, Frank McCabe as NICIAS, Darrel Bailey as AGORACRTUS the SAUSAGE-SELLER, Ray Ettinger as CLEON, & Michael Patton as DEMOS.
Gorilla Theatre is working its way through all surviving Greek plays without repeating. This will be the one of the last plays of the playwright Aristophanes'. Here are some of the Summer Greek Shows of Aristophanes' we have done:
LYSISTRATA by Aristophanes 1992
THE POET & THE WOMEN by Aristophanes 1996
THE FROGS by Aristophanes 1998
THE CLOUDS by Aristophanes 2002
THEBIRDS by Aristophanes 2009

Bernice/Butterfly -- 2013 KC Fringe Festival
Phoenix KC Theatre
Phoenix KC Theatre will present Bernice/Butterfly by Nagle Jackson with 5 performances during the 2013 KC Fringe Festival, July 19 - 27.
The show features cast members Marilyn Lynch, Robert Gibby Brand and Donovan Kidd and is directed by Warren Deckert.
Part 1 - Bernice At Bay -- Bernice, a waitress at the O-Kay Diner in a small, dying Kansas town, holds court during the breakfast shift - trading gossip and quips with the regulars. The comic facade fractures as past remembrances and a surprise visitor intrude on the morning.
Part 2 - The Butterfly Effect -- "...a cacophony of butterfly wings fanning us down to dismay..." Randall delivers an annual lecture to the American Philosophical Society. The jargon of his speech touches on such topics as chaos theory and "The Nature of Failure" as he attempts to make some sense out of the series of random small events that have created chaos in his otherwise predictable life.
Bernice At Bay and The Butterfly Effect are companion pieces, related in style and theme. Both shows are at the same venue and are always scheduled consecutively. Audience members are encouraged to see both shows back-to-back on the same evening.
Performance Dates/Times:
Sunday, July 21 -- Bernice At Bay - 1:30 pm/The Butterfly Effect - 3:00 pm
