Updated Open Call for Auditions -Addams Family (the musical) with character listing

The River City Community Players announce an Open Call for auditions for The Addams Family (the musical.)

The Addams Family (the musical) features an original story, and it's every father's nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family.

A man her parents have never met. And if that weren't upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he's never done before ... keep this secret from his beloved wife, Mortica.

Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday's 'normal' boyfriend and his parents.

Music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa, directed by Nino Casisi.

Please prepare 16-32 bars of a Broadway style selection (not from the Addams Family) to showcase your vocal range. Make sure your song is memorized.

Bring sheet music with your part highlighted. An accompanist will be provided.

NO ACCAPELLA singing or device like CD, I-Pod, MP3 or cell phone will be allowed.

Audition dates are Monday and Tuesday, August 29th and 30th 7 to 10 p.m., with callback being held on Wednesday, August 31st from 6:30 to 10 p.m.

Principal Roles (Male)
Gomez Addams, Playing Age: 40-50 - A man of Spanish descent who takes great pride in his family and revels in all it means to be an "Addams." He struggles with having to keep his daughters secret from his wife, whom he adores more than death. Smart, comedic actor with tenor vocals. Husband to Morticia, if indeed they are married at all ... a crafty schemer, but also a jolly man in his own way... though sometimes misguided ... sentimental and often puckish - optimistic, he has full enthusiasm for his dreadful plots... is sometimes seen in a rather formal dressing gown.
Vocal Range: Tenor - B flat to G sharp;
Dancing: Waltz, Tango and Superior Movement

Uncle Fester (Addams), Playing Age: 30-40 - The androgynous family member who serves as the musicals narrator. He is larger than life, an energetic, joyous, child-like presence. A vaudeville style comedian with tenor vocals. Uncle Fester is incorrigible and except for the good nature of the family and the ignorance of the police, would ordinarily be under lock and key ... the eyes are pig-like and deeply embedded ... he likes to fish, but usually employs dynamite ... he keeps falcons on the roof which he uses for hunting ... his one costume, summer and winter is a black great coat with an enormous collar... he is fat with pudgy little hands and feet.
Vocal Range: Tenor - C sharp to C sharp (preferably at belt)
Dancing: Minimal but Basic Movement

Lucas Beineke, Playing Age: 18-24 - Attractive, in shape young man. Fell in love with Wednesday Addams and plans to marry her. Experiences the youthful pain and drama of young love and struggles with the differences between his family and the Addams family. Contemporary pop tenor vocals. Lucas is (for the most part), a fairly normal person. He writes poetry and is apparently a romantic. He also has a crazy and dark side, proven during "Crazier Than You". He also seems to believe in traditional things like getting his parents blessing before getting married.
Vocal Range: Tenor - C sharp to C sharp
Dancing: Waltz and Basic Movement

Pugsley Addams, Playing Age: 10–14 - A charming, funny, husky boy who loves being tortured by his sister. He wants to ensure he won't lose his sister to her new boyfriend so he takes matters into his own hands. Strong, high vocals. Voice not yet changed. An energetic monster of a boy ... and a dedicated troublemaker, in other words the kid next door ... genius in his own way, he makes toy guillotines, full-size racks, threatens to poison his sister, can turn himself into a Mr. Hyde with an ordinary chemical set ... his voice is hoarse ... is sometimes allowed an occasional cigar (but not during the show).
Vocal Range: Tenor - A sharp to F sharp
Dancing: Minimal but Basic Movement

Mal Beineke, Playing Age: 40-55 - Stuffy father of Lucas and exasperated husband to his rhyming wife, Alice. At one time was a follower of The Grateful Dead but has lost that side of himself. Always looking out for his family. Male actor with high baritone/tenor vocals. Loves his family but has trouble dealing with both Alice and Lucas as well as his inner being.
Vocal Range: Tenor - C sharp to A sharp
Dancing: Waltz and Basic Movement

Lurch, Playing Age: 30-60 - A very tall male character, the Addams butler who knows all. He speaks in moans and groans without becoming a cartoon version of himself. His movement is always very slow. Character actor with a low bass vocal.
Vocal Range: Bass - E flat to E sharp
Dancing: None

Principal Roles (Female)
Morticia Addams, Playing Age: 40-55 – In shape, attractive, leggy, the strength of the family. An easy comedic actress with a sexy, dry wit. Feels her husband is hiding something from her and will use any tactic to lure the secret out. A strong dancer/mover with alto/mezzo soprano vocals. The real head of the family ... low-voiced, incisive and subtle, smiles are rare ... ruined beauty ... contemptuous and original and with fierce family loyalty ... even in disposition, muted, witty, sometimes deadly ... given to low-keyed rhapsodies about her garden of deadly nightshade, henbane and dwarf's hair...
Vocal Range: Alto - G sharp to B flat
Dancing: Waltz, Tango and Superior Movement (very sexy dance moves)

Wednesday Addams, Playing Age: 16-21 - Wednesday is an attractive, in shape girl who has the same dry wit and sensibility of her mother. Finds love with a "normal" boy (Lucas) and wants to introduce his family to hers. Experiences the youthful drama that comes with first love. Lucas can actually put a smile on her face. Strong popbelt vocals. Child of woe is wane and delicate ... sensitive and on the quiet side, she loves the picnics and outings to the underground caverns ... a solemn child, prim in dress and, on the whole, pretty lost ... secretive and imaginative, poetic, seems underprivileged and given to occasional tantrums ... has six toes on one foot.
Vocal Range: Soprano - A sharp to E sharp
Dancing: Waltz and Basic Movement

Alice Beineke, Playing Age: 30-40 - Mother of Lucas, devoted to her family so she puts aside her own desires. In shape, quirky female who often speaks in rhyme. While at the Addams Family dinner party, she drinks a potion that causes her to let her hair down and speak her truth. Comedic actress with soprano/belt vocals.
Vocal Range: Soprano - A flat to G sharp
Dancing: Waltz and Basic Movement

Grandmama, Playing Age: 60-80 - She is a feisty 102 year old woman. Fun and quirky, but don't mess with Grandma. Comedic actress with strong character vocals. This disrespectful old hag is the mother of Gomez ... she willingly helps with the dishes, cheats at solitaire and is roughly dishonest ... the complexion is dark, the hair is white and frizzy and uncombed ... she has a light beard and a large mole ... foolishly good natured ... fumbling, weak character ... is easily fooled.
Vocal Range: Belt - G sharp to F sharp
Dancing: Minimal but Basic Movement

ENSEMBLE ANCESTORS (The Extended Family) - 5 Male and 5 Female (or more if desired) Ensemble Singers and Dancers who are smart performers, who can morph into statues at a given moment and are trained dancers who have a fun and quirky sensibility. These actors should be from the age of 18 (possibly the age of 16 depending on vocal ability) who have a good range of dance styles.
Women-Jilted Bride, Flapper, Native American, Flight Attendant, Saloon Girl
Men-Caveman, Conquistador, Puritan, Soldier, Victorian Gambler
Vocal Ranges: All Ranges
Dancing: Tango, Flamenco, Waltz and Basic Movement.
