LAWRENCE OPERA THEATRE HONORS THE BARD, 8/11-14

Lawrence Opera Theatre's season honors the
Bard, August 11-14

This year marks the 400th anniversary of the
death of William Shakespeare, and Lawrence
Opera Theatre (LOT)'s 7th Summer Festival
celebrates the lasting legacy of the world's
greatest playwright. Shakespeare 400, August
11-14, features performances of Shakespeare's
words set to music in opera scenes, arias, and
musical theatre, culminating in a fully-staged
production of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas.

The Bard's Tale: Operas and Words from
Shakespeare, an evening of opera scenes and
arias, starts the weekend. Beloved settings of
Romeo and Juliet, Falstaff, Macbeth, are heard
with lesser-known works based on Hamlet, The
Tempest and The Taming of the Shrew.
Performances are at Theatre Lawrence, who
partners with LOT for a third season, providing
its state-of-the-art theatre for these
presentations. The popular musical theatre
cabaret is back, titled Brush Up Your
Shakespeare!,, featuring music from the Bard's
plays set for Broadway (think Kiss Me, Kate and
West Side Story). A free master class with
baritone Andrew Stuckey is open to the public
on August 13th. LOT has become known for its
fully-staged opera productions with unusual
settings and interpretations. This year they
turn to Henry Purcell, presenting Dido and
Aeneas interpolated with music from The Fairy
Queen.

Founded by KU alum and Metropolitan Opera tenor
Hugo Vera, the annual festival brings in young
professional singers from New York, St. Louis
and Tucson, and features many young artists
from the Lawrence and Kansas City area.
Providing opportunities for young singers,
community members, and emerging professionals,
as well as established vocal artists, to gain
performing experience is part of LOT's mission,
and Vera achieves this by filling the void of
opera and vocal music during the summer season
in the Kansas City region.
