Alcott Arts Center*

Alcott's Shakespeare in the Parking Lot VII "Merchant of Venice" by William Shakespeare: Sept 14,15, 21& 22: 3 pm Sat-Sun
"The Merchant of Venice" is the story of money lending, religious faith, and husband finding. In Venice we meet Shylock, a Jewish merchant and father, and Antonio, a Christian merchant, who have money-lending issues, which result in the call for a literal 'pound of flesh' as repayment. In the neighboring city of Belmont we meet Portia, a wealthy unmarried lady whose marriage prospects are dictated by her dead father's wishes. Directed by Anna Jennings. Featuring Jeff Shehan, Aaron Gotzon, Frank Presler, London Smith, Khalid Johnson, Liz Swick, Timothy Willett, Erik Johnsen, Kelsey Matthias, Heather Hare, Jen Morris, Sean Hill, and Ronald Davis. Rain (inside) or Shine (outside).

SYNOPSIS:
"The clashing sounds and pulsing rhythms of New
York City underscore this landmark "concept" show,
considered by many to have inaugurated the modern
era of musical theatre. COMPANY follows our anti-
hero bachelor Robert as he makes his way through a
series of encounters with April (the stewardess),
Kathy (the girl who's going to marry someone
else), Marta (the "peculiar" one), as well as with
his married friends.

"On the night of his 35th birthday, confirmed
bachelor Robert contemplates his unmarried state.
In vignette after hilarious vignette, we are
introduced to "those good and crazy people," his
married friends, as Robert weighs the pros and
cons of married life. In the end, he realizes
being alone is "alone, not alive."

"An honest, witty, sophisticated look at
relationships, COMPANY is as contemporary and
relevant as ever (witness the recent hit revivals
on Broadway and the West End). It features a
brilliant energetic score containing many of
Stephen Sondheim's best-known songs (including
"Another Hundred People," "The Ladies Who Lunch"
and "Being Alive"). – MTI

Given the limited rehearsal schedule, attendance is required at each. The first 3 or 4 rehearsals can be worked out between the director and the actor, as these rehearsals are one-on-one sessions.

PERFORMANCE
ONE NIGHT ONLY
Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013
at 6 p.m. through 7:30 p.m.

The performance takes place at…
The Shawnee Mission East High School Auditorium
7500 Mission Road in Prairie Village, KS

SYNOPSIS:
This original production has been two years in the making and commemorates a significant event in Prairie Village history as well as the 50th anniversary of the JFK presidency. It will be the only known such salute to this martyred president in Missouri and Kansas at a time when the news media will be remembering the 50th anniversary of his tragic death. While primarily a local and county event, people from across the state have been invited to attend.

CAST BREAKDOWN:
Senator John F. Kennedy
The only cast role will be Sen. John F. Kennedy. We are looking for someone to play him with grace and dignity. JFK was known for his good looks, long-ish hair (for the time), for his wit and humor, and for his charisma. Some participants from the original 1960 SME event, who will participate in a panel discussion after the event, said there was a high level of anticipation among the crowd prior to his arrival. The night before JFK had appeared before millions of Americans on television in the last of the first modern presidential debates.

JFK's entry at SME was said to have "electrified" the crowd. Part movie star, part politician, and now legend, JFK has continued to fascinate Americans and the world in the 50 years since his death. Like the actor James Dean, he remains immortal – eternally 46-years-old – in the memories of those who knew and loved him. This event is intended to give the audience a little glimpse of the famous man who appeared here so many years ago and has now become a legend.

Who was this intensely personal, yet out-going man, a president who was perhaps as close to being an intellectual as any president since Thomas Jefferson? That is the fascinating enigma of JFK, who historians are still trying to understand. Some say that no one really knew the real JFK: that he played many roles to many people and revealed himself totally to no one.

The actor playing this role should exude Kennedy's confidence, fondness for crowds and for people, and should be willing to greet members of the audience and to sign autographs at the end of the program, as the campaigning politician JFK himself did in 1960. He will be invited to mingle with the cast and special guests in a private cast party to follow off-site.

Emporia State University Theatre presents its 100th Theatre Season of Plays

Emporia State University Theatre presents
its 100th Theatre Season of Plays

Since our first production of Nathan Hale in 1913 under the
direction of Caroline Medders with settings designed by Franklin
Gilson, ESU Theatre has been a vital element of the cultural life
of Emporia and the region. In the year in which we celebrate the
150th birthday of the university, we look forward to our next
season of plays:

October 10-13 All Shook Up! (Our 41st Homecoming
Musical) by Joe DiPietro

November 19-24 reasons to be pretty (comic-drama) by Neil
LaBute

March 5-8 Boeing Boeing (Farce) by Camoletti, Cross
and Evans

April 16-19, 23-26 Uncle Vanya (tragicomedy) by Anton
Chekhov

May 2 Our Spring Dance Show by Lindy Bartruff

The 2013 season begins with Joe DiPietro's All Shook Up! A
musical comedy by the writer of Memphis and I Love You, You're
Perfect, Now Change, All Shook Up! is built around hit songs
made famous by Elvis Presley. Set in 1955, a dreamer and a
mysterious guitarist form an unlikely pair that inspires a small
town to open its eyes to the magic of romance and the power of
rock & roll. Borrowing some familiar plot devices from
Shakespeare, the score highlights classics like "Heartbreak
Hotel," "Love Me Tender," "Don't Be Cruel," "Can't Help Falling in
Love," and the title song.

ESU has ties to the Broadway production of All Shook Up! It was
stage managed on Broadway by ESU Alumna Lois Griffing who
also stage managed Hairspray and (currently) Kinky Boots. This
spicy musical, with music adapted by Tony-winning Stephen
Oremus will have you dancing out of your seat. Jim Bartruff
directs it, with choreography by Lindy Bartruff and musical
direction by Penny Speedie.

Our winter production has been entered as a participating entry
into the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. Neil
LaBute's reasons to be pretty is a love story about the
impossibility of love. The play is under the direction of senior
Mike Koetkemeyer (Salina). LaBute introduces us to a couple,
Greg and Steph, a flawed but likable twenty-something couple.
When Greg is asked to comment on Steph's "looks," chaos
ensues. A romantic and adult play, reasons to be pretty explores
the hopelessness of romance in the 21st century. It earned its
author and original cast numerous awards including a Tony
Award nomination for Best Play in 2008. A sequel to the play,
Reasons to Be Happy, enjoyed a celebrated off-Broadway run last
spring starring Jenna Fisher (The Office).

The third production, Boeing Boeing, is a French farce adapted
for the English-speaking stage. It was also a movie vehicle for
Jerry Lewis and Tony Curtis in 1965. Revived on Broadway in
2008 in a Tony-winning production, the farce features Bernard
who is engaged to marry three different women, one French, one
German, and one American. Each fiancée is an airline hostess
with frequent layovers. Bernard keeps "one up, one down and
one pending" until unfavorable layovers bring them all to his
apartment at the same time. Theresa Mitchell will direct.

Uncle Vanya, Chekhov's classic tragicomedy will be the final
production of the season. In Uncle Vanya, a retired professor and
his beautiful young wife, Elena have return to the professor's
country estate. Uncle Vanya discovers his hopeless and
unrequited feelings for the professor's wife. Meanwhile, the
professor's daughter, Sonya, yearns for the doctor, Astrov, who
only has eyes for Elena. If things don't seem complicated
enough, the professor has an announcement that could change
the lives of the entire household. A timeless observation of
human behavior and relationships, Uncle Vanya remains relevant
to audiences of our time. Our production will be under the
direction of Dr. Jim Ryan.

On May 2, we present our fourth annual spring dance show
under the direction of Choreographer Lindy Bartruff. Further
details will be made available at a later date.

COMEDIAN PAUL F. TOMPKINS RETURNS TO KC IMPROV FESTIVAL

When the 13th KC Improv Festival returns to the Off Center
Theatre at Crown Center in September, Paul F. Tompkins (Comedy
Bang! Bang!, Best Week Ever) will once again improvise with his
friends from the popular LA-based podcast, SuperEgo. They'll
share the stage with new and returning acts from Chicago and KC.

At KCiF, everything—every character, scene and song—is created
on the spot based on the suggestions from the audience.
Headliners also include:
--Susan Messing and KC native Tim Mason (both from the Second
City Chicago Mainstage)
--Jill Bernard's award-winning one-woman improvised musical, --
--Drum Machine (Huge Theater, MN)
--Kevin Mullaney (iO Chicago) and Nick Armstrong (iO West)

In addition, Chicago troupes Pizza Party and Freud Droid will
perform, along with festival hosts, the KC Improv Company, and
local troupes ComedyCity, Babel Fish, Chess with Death, After
School Special, Down in Front, and Keith Plus One.

Since laughter is best when shared, KCiF will be donating a portion

organization that brings the improv experience to local high
school students.

KCiF runs September 6-14, with shows and classes at the Off
Center Theatre at Crown Center and the Theater in Westport.
Showtimes, ticket prices, class registration and more are online at
kcimprovfestival.com.

Jekyll & Hyde

Wildhorn
Book and Lyrics by Leslie Bricusse
Music by Frank Wildhorn
Based on the story by Robert Louis Stevenson

An evocative tale of the epic battle between good
and evil, JEKYLL & HYDE is based on Robert Louis
Stevenson's classic story about a brilliant doctor
whose experiments with human personality create a
murderous counterpart. Convinced the cure for his
father's mental illness lies in the separation of
Man's evil nature from his good, Jekyll
unwittingly unleashes his own dark side, wreaking
havoc in the streets of London as the savage,
maniacal Edward Hyde.

The show offers great flexibility for cast size
and use of ensemble and its powerful rock score
will require strong, versatile singers.

We will be casting over 20 individuals.

Miss Saigon at Starlight

A CLASSIC LOVE STORY IS BROUGHT UP-TO-DATE IN MISS
SAIGON AT STARLIGHT, SEPTEMBER 7-13.
A team of international artists have been
assembled to produce one of the most stunning
theatrical spectacles of all time

Miss Saigon, one of the most stunning theatrical
spectacles of all time, will be produced by
Starlight Theatre, September 7-13. In Miss
Saigon, Puccini's Madame Butterfly is brought to
the modern world. This powerful pop opera is an
emotional tale about forbidden love, the tragedies
of war and the sacrifices made to achieve the
American Dream.

Miss Saigon is a love story about the relationship
between an American GI and a young Vietnamese
woman during the American occupation of Saigon
during the Vietnam War. The Tony Award-winning
musical was created by Claude Michel Schonberg and
Alain Boublil, the visionaries behind Les
Miserables, and features a series of sensational
musical numbers including, "Why God Why?" and "The
American Dream." It remains the 11th longest-
running Broadway musical in musical theatre
history.

"For Starlight's production of Miss Saigon, we
have assembled a stellar cast under the direction
of internationally recognized artists that
includes Director Fred Hanson, Music Director
Kevin Stites and Choreographer Baayork Lee," said
Denton Yockey, President and Executive Producer of
Starlight. "They are each established leaders in
the musical theatre industry, and I cannot
underscore enough what a thrill and a tremendous
privilege it has been to have them in Kansas City
rehearsing and preparing this production."

Starlight Theatre is the lead producer of Miss
Saigon. After opening in Kansas City, the co-
production will travel to the Bushnell Theatre in
Hartford, the Fisher Theatre in Detroit and the
Ordway Theatre in St. Paul. It is Starlight's
sixth and final production in its 2013 Broadway
Series, and is presented by U.S. Bank.

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION
The creative team for Miss Saigon includes:
Director Fred Hanson who is based in New York and
Rio de Janeiro. In Brazil, he has directed new
production of Baby and Jekyll & Hyde. Hanson's
previous experience with Miss Saigon includes
Associate Director to Nicholas Hytner on the
original Broadway productions and directing his
own versions for the St. Louis Muny, São Paulo and
Tokyo (2004 & 2008).

Music Director Kevin Stites served as the Music
Supervisor, Arranger and Music Director for the
Broadway musical A Tale of Two Cities; the Music
Supervisor and Incidental Music Composer for the
Broadway musical and the national tour of The
Color Purple; and the Music Director of the
Broadway revival of Les Miserables.

Choreographer Baayork Lee debuted on Broadway at
the age of 4 as Princess Ying Yaawolak in the
original production of The King and I in 1951. Lee
was a member of the original 1975 Broadway cast of
A Chorus Line, which won nine Tony Awards and the
1975 Pulitzer Prize. She has started her own
production company, the National Asian Arts
Project, in order to open theatre doors for people
of Asian descent.

The talented cast includes: Charlie Brady, Katie
Boren, Meggie Cansler, Andy Danh, Robyn DeGuzman,
Rona Figueroa, Nkrumah Gatling, Dan Gleason, Chris
Ignacio, Eric Anthony Johnson, Austin Ku, Jonny
Hsu Lee, Glen Llanes, Garen McRoberts, Orville

This drama/comedy addresses many issues to create a positive conclusion by explaining happiness, insecurities and true beauty. In the opening the characters retain no acumen on how to reach joy. Elaine has the potential to feel love and satisfaction but instead she acts acrimoniously towards her beauty. She tries to force people into complimenting her but some abjure and ignore these pleas. The Miss Firecracker Contest concludes a gratifying story with an impressive ending. Some adult language
