Paseo's Announces Auditions for school next year 2013-2014
Auditions
for
Paseo Academy
of Fine & Performing Arts
2013-2014 Academic Year
May 2nd & May 15th at 3:30 p.m.
Paseo is located at 4747 Flora, Kansas City, MO 64110
It has been proven in many studies that students who have a strong training in the arts do better on standardized test than students who have no arts education. The arts make not only the students better, but the community as well.
All art forms have a place at Paseo Academy. It's a place to improve your talents, show off your talents and cultivate your talents that you might not have known you had. The school, which becomes like a family, integrates the arts throughout college preparatory classes many other activities that prepare you for life after high school.
Theater is the only art form that encom¬passes all of the art forms such as creative writing, music, dance, and visual arts. The¬ater students can obtain analytical and oral language skills as well as self confidence and discipline for careers in the ever growing entertainment industry. The skills learned in theater will also be helpful in other careers outside of the entertainment industry such as, public speaking, law, and politics.
Dance is a visual art form that allows the body to act as an instrument for expression. Dance Majors have the chance to participate in the All Arts holiday performance "Holiday on the Hill", and take a trip to The Big Apple experience. To rap up the year, the entire Dance Department will present the All Arts Dance & Theater senior showcase.
VISUAL ARTS Through drawing, graphic de¬sign, ceramics, painting and printmaking, the visual art major develops a thorough under¬standing and range of skills using two-dimen¬sional media. Students are led to employ a wide range of vocabulary in visual art and polish skills, which readies them for a post secondary program of study in visual art.
Television Production/Broadcast¬ing is a Career and Technical Education program that operates out of Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts. The goal of the program is two-fold: first to introduce all stu¬dents in the Kansas City Public schools to the television and broadcast journalism industry, teach them how it works and present the ca¬reer opportunities. Second, the program will prepare students to be college, career and work ready in the television and broadcasting journalism industry.
Technical theater at Paseo focuses on resume and portfolio building through hands on real life learning. Students will learn the basics in technical theater production and de¬sign in the classroom and by acting as interns for Paseo Academy and assist in the techni¬cal productions for all school events such as music, dance, and poetry performances.
The Choral Music Conservatory students study Voice Pedagogy of Perfor¬mance, Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, Theory 1 and 2, Piano 1 and 2 and Individualized Lessons. We also offer a Middle School component for 7th and 8th graders. Our Choral Music Conservatory provides many performance opportunities for students to formally and creatively express themselves. Upon completion of their choral studies stu¬dents are worthy for music scholarship, for the post secondary studies or ready for entry into the professional arena.
Creative Writing students study poetry, fic¬tion, nonfiction and playwriting. In addition to studying published works, students write critical responses to literature. Writing of exceptional merit is published in the Poets Voice, Paseo's literary magazine. You might find students reading at The Writers Place and the Blue Room.
Instrumental Music/Band students will have the desire to perform music other have composed. They either have developed skills and already play a musical instrument or have a desire to learn. They will have the discipline to be able to follow a teacher's directions and the self-discipline to practice.
Instrumental Music/Orchestra students will have the desire to perform music other have composed. They either have the skills and already play a stringed instrument or have the desire to learn. They will have the discipline to be able to follow a teacher's directions and the self-discipline to practice.
It has been proven in many studies that students who have a strong training in the arts do better on standardized test and are more likely to succeed in post secondary education than students who have no arts education. The arts make not only the students better but the community as well. Paseo Academy of the Fine and Performing Arts can make it better.
Auditions are required of all students interested in attending Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts. Audition details can be found on the school website at:

KC show opens GayFest!
PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
KC show Cirque du Gay is honored to open GayFest! in Philadelphia this August
CONTACT:
Dennis Porter at dennis@happyfacesentertainment.biz or 816-309-2460
Starting four years ago in the Kansas City Fringe Festival, Happy Faces Entertainment's production of Cirque du Gay is now heading across the United States. The show will be the opening two night performances for the three week theater festival on August 6 & 7, 2013. They have enjoyed two successful years with the Kansas City Fringe Fest, where they were selected as the "Best of" both years and highly talked about performances at the New Orleans Fringe Festival. They are honored to be the opening performances for the Philadelphia GayFest! this August. Although unable to attend, the show has also been invited to perform in the New York City Fresh Fruit Festival this summer. They are excited to "expose" new audiences to their unique blend of passion and laughter.
To help with travel costs for their trip, a fundraiser show will be held on Friday, May 3rd starting at 8:00pm at Missie B's, 805 W 39th St., KCMO. The Cirque du Gay Cabaret will feature a variety of local entertainers, as well a some segments from the Cirque du Gay show. This will not be the entire Cirque show, which you will have to wait and see the latest version at this year's KC Fringe Festival.
The full show includes Kansas City natives Dennis Porter and Peyton Westfall as they present a rainbow of entertainment and pure happy fun. After years of playing with audiences of all ages, Porter and Westfall have developed an high-energy adult show that encourages audience participation and interaction for the enjoyment of everyone. Porter and Westfall combine their impressive variety of skills and invite you into a new world of the circus. Experience the adult circus that keeps you laughing with music, dancing, clowning, juggling, puppetry, S&M and even Broadway. We also bare all, as you get a look at what happens behind the circus tent. It's not just a gay thing! "My husband and I attended your show last night. It was smart, funny and very entertaining. We had a fantastic time and laughed all the way home chatting about the show. Thanks!"-Wendy McDermott
WHAT THE CRITICS SAY!
"If you can only see one fringe show this is it. These two performers are smooth and slick and have their shtick down. Fun for everyone, with a little skin thrown in!" Richard D. Eberle, KC Stage
"This is NYC, San Francisco (and Paris, bien sûr) caliber talent. The numbers combine music, dance, lip synching, mime and comedy. The costumes were as garish and sometimes comical, as they were gorgeous and creative. The performers are at the top of their game." Joi B., Yelp.com
"Top-notch entertainment, as always Mr. Porter. Thanks for joining us last night!" Damian Blake, Kansas City Society of Burlesque

OCTA Announces 2013-2014 Season
OCTA is pleased to announce our 40th Season!
COMPANY
Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, book by George Furth
Directed by Jason Coats
Synopsis
The clashing sounds and pulsing rhythms of New York City underscore this landmark "concept" show, considered by many to have inaugurated the modern era of musical theatre. COMPANY follows our anti-hero bachelor Robert as he makes his way through a series of encounters with April (the stewardess), Kathy (the girl who's going to marry someone else), Marta (the "peculiar" one), as well as with his married friends.
On the night of his 35th birthday, confirmed bachelor Robert contemplates his unmarried state. In vignette after hilarious vignette, we are introduced to "those good and crazy people," his married friends, as Robert weighs the pros and cons of married life. In the end, he realizes being alone is "alone, not alive."
An honest, witty, sophisticated look at relationships, COMPANY is as contemporary and relevant as ever (witness the recent hit revivals on Broadway and the West End). It features a brilliant energetic score containing many of Stephen Sondheim's best-known songs (including "Another Hundred People," "The Ladies Who Lunch" and "Being Alive"). -- MTI
Production Dates:
Sept 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22 2013

CHRISTMAS BELLES
By Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, Jamie Wooten
Directed by Gregory Chafin
It's Christmas-time in the small town of Fayro, Texas, and the Futrelle Sisters—Frankie, Twink and Honey Raye—are not exactly in a festive mood. A cranky Frankie is weeks overdue with her second set of twins. Twink, recently jilted and bitter about it, is in jail for inadvertently burning down half the town. And hot-flash-suffering Honey Raye is desperately trying to keep the Tabernacle of the Lamb's Christmas Program from spiraling into chaos. But things are not looking too promising: Miss Geneva, the ousted director of the previous twenty-seven productions, is ruthless in her attempts to take over the show. The celebrity guest Santa Claus—played by Frankie's long-suffering husband, Dub—is passing a kidney stone. One of the shepherds refuses to watch over his flock by night without pulling his little red wagon behind him. And the entire cast is dropping like flies due to food poisoning from the Band Boosters' Pancake Supper. And when Frankie lets slip a family secret that h!
as been carefully guarded for decades, all hope for a successful Christmas program seems lost, even with an Elvis impersonator at the manger. But in true Futrelle fashion, the feuding sisters find a way to pull together in order to present a Christmas program the citizens of Fayro will never forget. Their hilarious holiday journey through a misadventure-filled Christmas Eve is guaranteed to bring joy to your world! – DPS

The Barn Players 2014 Season!
Announcing
THE BARN PLAYERS 2014 SEASON
Our 59th continuous season of great plays and musicals!
BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON February 28 – March 16
Music & Lyrics by Michael Friedman RATED R
Book by Alex Timbers
This musical tells the story of America's first political maverick. A.J. kicked British butt, shafted the Indians and smacked down the Spaniards all in the name of these United States--who cares if he didn't have permission? An exhilarating and white-knuckled look at one of our nation's founding rock stars, the show recreates and reinvents the life of "Old Hickory," from his humble beginnings on the Tennessee frontier to his days as Commander-in-Chief.
FOLLIES April 18 – May 4
Music & Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim RATED PG
Book by James Goldman
The year is 1971, and theatrical impresario Dimitri Weissmann hosts a reunion of ex-Follies performers in his crumbling theatre, setting the stage for a parade of brilliant pastiche numbers, including "Losing My Mind," "I'm Still Here," and "Broadway Baby." Amid the reminiscing, two middle-aged couples confront some unpleasant truths about their past and present and come face to face with the future. Surreal, sophisticated, compelling, heart-wrenching and epic in scope, this show uses the musical theatre as a metaphor for the collapse of American innocence and naivete in the post-Kennedy years.
AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY May 30 – June 15
By Tracy Letts RATED R
A vanished father. A pill-popping mother. Three sisters harboring shady little secrets. When the large Weston family unexpectedly reunites after Dad disappears, their Oklahoman family homestead explodes in a maelstrom of repressed truths and unsettling secrets. Mix in Violet, the drugged-up, scathingly acidic matriarch, and you've got a major new play that unflinchingly—and uproariously—exposes the dark side of the Midwestern American family.
NOISES OFF July 18 – August 3
By Michael Frayn RATED PG-13
Called the funniest farce ever written, this play presents a manic menagerie of characters as a cast of itinerant actors rehearsing a flop play called Nothing's On. Doors slamming, on and backstage intrigue, and an errant herring all figure in the plot of this hilarious and classically comic play.
HAIR September 19 – October 5
Music by Galt MacDermot RATED R
Lyrics & Book by Gerome Ragni & James Rado
This classic rock musical tells the story of Vietnam-era youths awkwardly but exuberantly creating their own rite of passage through the confusion around them. With themes of alienation and civil disobedience Hair illustrates the '60s generation's search for meaning through various "be-ins," "love-ins" and protests. Phenomenal musical numbers include Aquarius, Good Morning Starshine, Hair, I Got Life, Let The Sunshine In and Easy To Be Hard.
LA CAGE AUX FOLLES November 7 - 23
Music & Lyrics by Jerry Herman RATED PG
Book by Harvey Fierstein
After twenty years of un-wedded bliss Georges and Albin, two men partnered for better-or-worse get a bit of both when Georges' son (fathered during a one-night fling) announces his impending marriage to the daughter of a bigoted, right-wing politician. Further complicating the situation is the 'family business': Albin and Georges run a transvestite nightclub in St. Tropez, where Albin is the "star" performer 'Zaza'. When Anne's parents want to come and meet Jean-Michel's mother and father, chaos ensues.

SHREK: THE MUSICAL A Barn Jr. Production January 17 - 26
Music by Jeanine Tesori RATED PG
Book & Lyrics by David Linsday-Abaire
Based on the Oscar® winning DreamWorks film that started it all, this musical brings the hilarious story of everyone's favorite ogre to dazzling new life on the stage. In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre — not a handsome prince — shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Throw in a donkey who won't shut up, a bad guy with a short temper, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you've got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero.
DISNEY'S CINDERELLA, KIDS A Barn Kids Production Session 1: June 17 - 19
