PRESS RELEASE 3/18/2013
MUSICAL THEATER HERITAGE
PRESENTING STEPHEN SONDHEIM'S
SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE
Musical Theater Heritage (MTH) will open their 11th season with the Kansas City premiere of the Pulitzer Prize winning SUNDAY IN
THE PARK WITH GEORGE, by Stephen Sondheim. Inspired by the painting "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" by
Georges Seurat, SUNDAY opened on Broadway in 1984 and received 10 Tony nominations.
MTH's Executive Producer Chad Gerlt states, "The Pulitzer Prize for Drama has been awarded to a Musical only 8 times. It was
awarded to this show because of its commentary on the making of art, and the struggle every artist goes through, regardless of
the medium. This complex and diverse score is rarely produced on professional stages."
Of the original production in 1984, Frank Rich of The New York Times wrote: "Mr. Sondheim has created an audacious, haunting and
touching work. Sunday in the Park is setting the stage for even more sustained theatrical innovations yet to come."
In the title role of George, MTH will feature Kansas City favorite Tim Scott. Playing George's female counterpart, Dot, will be
Katie Karel. Kansas City audiences will remember them both from MTH's 2011 production of EVITA. The production is directed by
Sarah Crawford and will feature a 10-member orchestra, and 17-member cast.
Additionally, MTH is proud to welcome Kansas City's premiere Art museum, The Nelson-Atkins museum of Art, as an official sponsor
of SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE. The Nelson will send a museum curator to offer a brief pre-show talk about French
Impressionism, Seurat, and his 2 masterpieces at the matinee performances on Sunday, March 31 and Sunday, April 7 at 2pm.
Sunday in the Park with George will play the Off Center Theatre in Crown Center March 28 - April 14, 2013.
