ESU Theatre Presents: A Christmas Carol

Emporia State University Theatre presents live
radio broadcast of "A Christmas Carol".

Emporia State University Theatre students and
faculty will perform a radio adaptation of A
Christmas Carol, the timeless classic by
Charles Dickens, on December 10 at 7:00 pm in
the Karl C. Bruder Theatre. The performance
will be available to hear on the radio or
streamed online, but it can also be watched
live in the theatre. A suggested donation of $5
can be made at the door for the live
performance; donations will go toward theatre
scholarships. The performance will be broadcast
live on KISS 103.1 FM Radio.

The radio adaptation of the play was adapted by
Assistant Professor Dan Matisa. On the process
of adapting the play for radio, Matisa said, "I
loved re-reading the original Charles Dickens
story and adapting it for radio! I didn't look
at any other stage versions or adaptations of
the story—just the original Dickens novella.
Nearly every word we say will be from the pen
of Charles Dickens… My aim at the outset was to
stay as faithful as I could to the words of
Dickens, while getting the play to an hour in
length."

This will be the first radio performance
presented by the ESU Theatre Department in
collaboration with KISS 103.1. It is also KISS
103.1's first live radio play. ESU Theatre
students performed a radio adaptation of Frank
Capra's It's a Wonderful Life in 2009, however
that performance was not broadcast over the
radio.

Cameron Reynolds, ESU Theatre student and KISS
103.1 radio personality is "super excited for
the opportunity to produce this radio play.
Radio and theatre have been my passion for my
entire college career and I am overjoyed to
combine both of those to do something that is
not only great for the community, but also
allows me to give back to ESU Theatre."

Performers include Matisa (as Scrooge), Jim
Bartruff, Lindy Bartruff, Taylor Galloway,
Chris Lohkamp and Jennifer Newell. Student
performers include Bailey Carter, Tyler Lang,
Ryan Howerton, Justin Scheck and Nathan Short.
Music will be provided by Sue Seeman and
Madison Schultz. Before the program goes live
there will be a Christmas carol sing-along.
People of all ages are encouraged to listen on
air or attend the live performance on December
10 at 7:00 pm in the Karl C. Bruder Theatre in
King Hall.

CableOne is the corporate sponsor for the
broadcast and Brickyard 20 Ale House will host
an after party where "The Wanted" will be
playing live. The cover charge at the door will
also support ESU Theatre scholarships.
