Open Audition Call - The Red Velvet Cake War

The River City Community Players begins their 40th season with The Red Velvet Cake War by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten

Auditions will be held Jan 4-5 from 7 - 9 p.m.

Directed by Melanie Marcec.

Come prepared to perform cold readings from the script. Bring a complete list of conflicts from January 4 – February 28. A current resume and head shot are welcome, but not required.

Also, please arrive 10-15 minutes prior to the start time to complete your audition information form.

Auditions will be held at the Leavenworth Performing Arts Center located at 500 Delaware Ave., Leavenworth, KS.

In this riotously funny Southern-fried comedy, the three Verdeen cousins—Gaynelle, Peaches, and Jimmie Wyvette—could not have picked a worse time to throw their family reunion. Their outrageous antics have delighted local gossips in the small town of Sweetgum (just down the road from Fayro) and the eyes of Texas are upon them, as their self-righteous Aunt LaMerle is quick to point out. Having "accidentally" crashed her minivan through the bedroom wall of her husband's girlfriend's doublewide.

Gaynelle is one frazzled nerve away from a spectacular meltdown. Peaches, a saucy firebrand and the number one mortuarial cosmetologist in the tri-county area, is struggling to decide if it's time to have her long-absent trucker husband declared dead. And Jimmie Wyvette, the rough-around-the-edges store manager of Whatley's Western Wear, is resorting to extreme measures to outmaneuver a priss-pot neighbor for the affections of Sweetgum's newest widower. But the cousins can't back out of the reunion now.

It's on, Gaynelle's hosting it, and Peaches and Jimmie Wyvette have decided that its success is the perfect way to prove Gaynelle's sanity to a skeptical court-appointed psychologist.

Unfortunately, they face an uphill battle as a parade of wildly eccentric Verdeens gathers on the hottest day of July, smack-dab in the middle of Texas tornado season. Things spin hilariously out of control when a neighbor's pet devours everything edible, a one-eyed suitor shows up to declare his love, and a jaw-dropping high-stakes wager is made on who bakes the best red velvet cake.

As this fast-paced romp barrels toward its uproarious climax, you'll wish your own family reunions were this much fun!

A Christmas Carol Gone Amuck

The River City Community Players, under the auspices of the Leavenworth City Parks and Recreation Deparment present a one weekend only showing of A Christmas Carol Gone Amuck.

Written and directed by Eric Van Horn.

A small radio station, WBRK, in the northeast has hired an acting troupe to come in and present a reading of "A Christmas Carol" for broadcast. All of the advertising has been sold and the performance is drawing near.

Because the tightwad station manager booked the acting troupe's accommodations at a rustic idle camp in the woods they break an axle on their bus and are stranded.

They are not able to make it to the reading. The station manager does not want to give the advertising money back and after several crazy ideas are floated it is decided that the station personnel will present the reading.

So the station announcer, his nine months pregnant wife, the station manager and his pushy wife, Bob the janitor and the doorman set about providing the entertainment.

Craziness and hilarity ensues. Doc, the doorman, who the script describes as "very subtle, a whatever kind of guy, not so smart".

Featuring Linda Finch, Mike Forsythe, Edd Hingula, Gary Linhart, Carrie Mills and Joshua Shockey.

Performances will be at the Leavenworth Performing Arts Center at 500 Delaware in downtown Leavenworth Friday, December 11th at 7pm, Saturday, December 12th at 7p.m., and Sunday, December 13th at 2p.m.

Admission is by free donations ($5 suggested) are accepted.

If you are looking for a holiday pick me up, this show is for you. It runs less than 90 minutes.
Reservations are not being accepted.

SYNOPSIS: Bialystock and Bloom! Those names should strike terror and hysteria in anyone familiar with Mel Brooks' classic cult comedy film. Now as a big Broadway musical, THE PRODUCERS once again sets the standard for modern, outrageous, in-your-face humor. It is a truly "boffo" hit, winning a record twelve Tony Awards and wowing capacity crowds night after night. The plot is simple: a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history thereby bilking their backers (all "little old ladies") out of millions of dollars. Only one thing goes awry: the show is a smash hit! The antics of Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom as they maneuver their way fecklessly through finding a show (the gloriously offensive "Springtime For Hitler"), hiring a director, raising the money and finally going to prison for their misdeeds is a lesson in broad comic constructi
on. At the core of the insanely funny adventure is a poignant emotional journey of two very different men who become friends.

Press Release - MTH Presents "Urinetown, The Musical"

Contact: Chad Gerlt
Office: 816-221-6987

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
MUSICAL THEATER HERITAGE – AT CROWN CENTER
TO PRESENT 'URINETOWN: THE MUSICAL'

KANSAS CITY, MO—Musical Theater Heritage (MTH) will present "Urinetown: The Musical," by Mark Hollman and Greg Kotis,
winner of three 2002 Tony Awards. Performances will take place Thursdays at 7pm, Fridays @ 8pm, Saturdays @ 2pm & 8pm,
and Sundays @ 2pm, November 5-22. All performances will be held in the main stage at Musical Theater Heritage in the
Crown Center Shops.

Tickets range in price from $17 to $55 and can be purchased by calling the MTH box office at (816) 221-6987, or by
visiting www.MTHKC.com. Group discounts are available, as well as a *KIDS COME FREE program for kids and teens 16 and
younger (1 free kid's ticket for each 1 paying adult. Parents must call to purchase).

The idea for "Urinetown" was born when composer Greg Kotis, traveling in Europe, encountered pay-per-use toilets in
Paris. Traveling on a budget, he found he had to decide to use his spare change to have something to eat, or use the
amenities. It was then that the musical's central idea hit him: a Gotham-like city where all the toilets were controlled
by a greedy, crooked corporation called "You're In Good Company" with no concern for the poor, bladder-oppressed masses.

The result is pure, hilarious and innovative entertainment. "Urinetown" parodies many popular musicals and theater
conventions and playfully pokes fun at itself. "Urinetown" is also rich with social commentary about the American
economy, and the division between rich and poor.

In 1999 "Urinetown" got its start when became the hit of the New York City Fringe Festival, which led to a commercial
production, opening at the Henry Miller Theater in 2002. It won Tony Awards that year for Best Director, Best Original
Score and Best Book of a Musical. Today "Urinetown" is very popular with regional, community & school theaters thanks to
its off-beat humor and the variety of its songs.

Don Richard, from the original cast of "Urinetown" on Broadway, returns to Kansas City to play the role of Officer
Lockstock. Richard was also seen in Musical Theater Heritage production of "Sweeney Todd" in 2012 – playing the title
role and receiving much critical acclaim.

"Urinetown" features 22 Kansas City local favorites, including Kip Niven & Julie Shaw. The production is directed /
music directed by Sarah Crawford and conducted by Jeremy Watson. A pre-show talk will be given at every show by MTH
founder and radio host, George Harter.

MTH's live productions were spearheaded by George Harter and Chad Gerlt, producing shows in Kansas City since 2003.
Recently the two signed a long-term contract with the Crown Center Redevelopment Corporation, making the Crown Center
Shops their permanent home and have agreed to provide Kansas City with 180 performances each year. They have also
acquired the two unused movie theaters in the complex and converted them into additional performance & rehearsal space.

Who is Joe Williams?
Joe lives in New York City, and has been creating workshops and seminars on Delsarte since 1997. In November of 2011 he taught his Three Pillars approach to Delsarte at the Centre National de la Danse and the Centre International de Danse Jazz in Paris, also singing a recital of Delsarte vocal compositions at the National Art History Institute of Paris. In Germany, he gave a master class at the Trossingen Conservatory, and at the Akademie fur Gesprochenes Wort in Stuttgart. For six years he taught on the movement faculty for the Dalcroze Institute at Juilliard, and has been a guest teacher, and Artist in Residence for Lori Belilove's Isadora Duncan Dance Foundation in New York, teaching modern dance to third graders in Pennsylvania. As guest artist at the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater (2012), he taught classes for the acting, dance and music programs

Who/What is Delsarte?
The source material for much of the work of Isadora Duncan, Ruth St Denis, Ted Shawn, Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Charles Weideman, Etienne Decroux. This fact is known by most dance history students. But did you know that it was a key element of the actors training for such luminaries as Rosalind Russell, Ruth Gordon, Edward G Robinson, Agnes Moorehead, Lauren Bacall, Claire Trevor and Spencer Tracy? All of these actors were students at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts before 1944. The 1944 Class descriptions include a pantomime class that although never mentions Delsarte, was clearly Delsarte based. The school was founded by Steele Mackaye, Delsarte's own protege'.

Body Language and the Artist
Saturday Oct. 24 at 10:00am - 11:30am
This seminar introduces students to some of the most basic elements of body language, as revealed by Delsarte. This is applicable not only to dance but to all the arts, to business, communications, psychology, or any individual who would like to benefit from more knowledge of the self. We look at the common movement languages of forward and back, side to side, diagonals, curves, and some simple expressions of the angles of head movement.

This workshop is a prerequisite for ALL of the other workshops. If you've taken this in the past then you may take any of the other workshops.

The Three Pillars Artist's Warm-Up
Saturday Oct. 24 at 11:30am - 1:00pm
The goal of the Delsarte warm-up is to create a body that functions with absolute freedom and relaxation, yet with strength through refined balance and alignment. The goal of this strength, freedom, and relaxation is to have a body that responds to the slightest communicative or artistic impulse. As perpetual students of expression, artists can use this warm up to release inhibiting patterns of familiar behavior, create a body that can access a new and ever-widening range of expressive skills. The exercises are simple, subtle, and powerful, and influenced virtually every dancer, actor, singer, and therapeutic modality of the first half of the twentieth century.

Body Language and the Artist is a prerequisite for ALL of the workshops. If you've taken this in the past then you may take any of the other workshops.

Principles of Movement and Gesture for the Actor/Text Worker
Saturday Oct. 24 at 2:00pm - 4:00pm
In this class we will use nine principles of movement to explore how the slightest changes in angle, speed, height, and shape of a gesture can completely altar the perceived story behind it. Studying the principles gives the actor power of those choices, and inspires new visions of possibility within the traditions of subtext. Bring a line or two of text or script that might be spoken to a scene partner in class.

Musicality Made Easy Through Movement
Saturday Oct. 24 at 4:00pm - 6:00pm
Gleaned from six summers of teaching for the Dalcroze Institute at Juilliard, where movement was used to teach musical interpretation to concert musicians, conductors, theater and opera performers, and music teachers from around the globe. Delsarte's Expressive Zones of the Body
Sunday Oct. 25 at 10:30am - 12:00pm

This seminar explores Delsarte's identification of Mental, Moral-Emotive, and Vital energies, as expressed in many parts of the body. This is a class filled with "A-Ha!" moments as students recognize the accuracy and applicability of these forgotten truths. Learn how changing the height of a gesture by a few inches, or changing which finger is used to initiate a touch can powerfully alter the meaning of that gesture. Learn how your own movement patterns may be limiting the expressive use of your entire body.

Sunday Oct. 25 at 6:00pm - 8:00pm

This is your chance to participate in using the skills we have learned to enrich works or solve challenges in pieces that you or other artists bring in.

The principles are so simple that thy can be easily grasped by the least musically trained, while challenging the most advanced students that walked through the doors of Juilliard. This class includes the physical experiences of: the difference between rhythm and meter, the basic rhythmic patterns of musical structure, reading note values and tempo, and analysis of music brought in by the students.

Technique alone tends to create academic works of art, but when used to support and elevate creativity, technique can take a work to exciting, unexpected heights. Bring your ideas and your imaginations, and let's explore the ground where inspiration and Delsartean skill can work together to create our best work.
