The Faux Fab Four?
Kansas City, Mo. (August 29, 2014) And they're traveling with a fatal flaw—a murder in their midst! Come help with the investigation on The Mystery Train as "Magical Murdery Tour" opens September 5th and runs through October 25th with performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings in your favorite restaurants. Starring (l to r): Josh Morrow, Trevor Tournear, and Erik J. Pratt as the mop-top musicians in search of a killer.
"Magical Murdery Tour"— The British invasion has taken a turn through Kansas City in 1964 and the fans are loving it! A killing has been made, both onstage and off, but between the imposters and the impersonators, it may be hard to tell who the victim is, let alone the killer! It's guaranteed someone will be singing a sad refrain. Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! … Yeah!
Murder mystery dinner theater is presented as a live interactive game, but not all dinner companions are who they seem: one of them may be an accomplice to murder—or even the murderer himself! Step back in time and join the fun.
The evening begins with seating and role-playing at 6:30 pm. Performances are at The Golden Ox, in downtown Kansas City and at Californos Westport. See our website for a complete schedule. Tickets are $59 each on Thursdays, $69 each on Fridays and Saturdays. Those prices include dinner, show, and gratuity. First Fridays are still $10 off, too. A cash bar is available. Advance reservations are required and can be made by calling (816) 813-9654. Or, order through the Central Ticket Office at 816-235-6222, or online at www.kcmysterytrain.com.
The Mystery Train offers group rates and is also available for private parties.

'Mother of all musicals': Theater company launches first show
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
'Mother of all musicals': Theater company launches first show
Show draws on real-world motherhood experiences for laughs
Fri., Aug. 22, 2014
KANSAS CITY, MO - Sara Stotts and Julie Dunlap met at the
University of Kansas twenty years ago in Lawrence, Kansas. As
members of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, Stotts encouraged
Dunlap to become involved with 'Rock Chalk Revue,' a musical talent
show that benefits charity. The two collaborated for three years on
the revue: writing, performing, and - ultimately - becoming close
friends and laying the foundation for their future in musical theater.
Each was graduated from KU, got married, and had children. Today,
Dunlap is humor writer, and she and her husband are raising their
four children in Lawrence. Meanwhile, Stotts is a physical therapist
now living in Chicago with her husband and two children. Between
the two moms, that is six kids, ranging in ages from four to
seventeen. So, when Dunlap proposed writing a musical comedy
about motherhood to Stotts, "it seemed like a no-brainer," or so she
thought.
The reality: nothing. Stotts didn't respond to Dunlap. Undeterred,
Dunlap wrote stories and songs anyway. Finally, after two months of
no communication, Stotts called Dunlap. Armed with some sample
material, Dunlap was sure she could convince Stotts to come on
board and join her in writing a show. It turned out, Stotts did not
need convincing; she, too, had been writing material. And,
"MotherF*ingHood: The Musical" was born.
Over the course of two years, the pair would video chat, sing songs
to one another via the Internet, and post demos on a private
YouTube channel to make the 550-mile separation a viable
collaboration distance. They held the very first staged reading at
Lawrence Arts Center in Lawrence. The reading proved successful
and they mounted a full production, again at the Lawrence Arts
Center. Stotts starred; Dunlap directed; and the show nearly sold
out its run a year ago.
"MotherF*ingHood: The Musical" follows three very different women
as they journey from pregnancy tests to empty nests. Finding
laughter in the labor and glamour in the mundane, Rachael, Angie,
and Marcia discover motherhood is an adventure best shared with
friends. With songs like "Birthing Wars," "Poo-Wop Playgroup," and
"Teenage Driver Hell Zone," this show goes just beyond what
everyone feels comfortable talking about at dinner parties.
Audiences laugh, cry, and know that the stories come from real life
experiences because they can completely relate.
Since the Arts Center production, the duo have teamed up with a
brand new theater group called Moonshine Variety Co. Moonshine's
mission provides for fostering new writers and helping them to
develop new work, especially with talent from the central part of the
United States. Both playwrights hold Kansas City dear to their hearts
and are very much at home with family still in the metropolitan
area.
So, Stotts and Dunlap have focused on the script and score. Gone
are the days of bootstrapping a production with friends and family.
They are neither starring nor directing. These days, they are
concentrating on what they might do to improve the show so they
can eventually publish their first show. Both ladies admit to having
started work on the next shows. For now, they are letting
Moonshine take over the producing duties.
Coming up September 5-6, 2014, Moonshine will present two
staged readings at The Buffalo Room at the Westport Flea Market.
The show stars Katie Gilchrist, Jennifer Mays, and Heidi Van. Co-
starring are Stasha Case and Jordan Lankhorst. Musical direction is
by Don Steele with Daniel Doss conducting the orchestra and
playing piano. Tyler Harvey will be on keyboards; Danny Kaul will
play bass guitar; and Jerod Drivers is on drums. The show is
directed by Les Lankhorst and produced by Seth Eckelman. Tickets
are $18-26 per person both Friday, September 5th and Saturday,
September 6th and are available online at
www.MoonshineVariety.Co.
A full professional production is in the works for a 2015 Kansas City
premiere. Both Dunlap and Stotts never thought as roommates in
college that they would, one day, be writing a musical together.
They remain humble, though, and credit their success to just part of
being a "Go Mom" - a moniker from their show. What exactly is a
"Go Mom"? Dunlap and Stotts will tell anyone, "Buy a ticket and find
out. We've got six kids to put through college."

What Happened?!
What Happened?! is a behind-the-scenes presentation and live screening of some of the worst films ever made. Learn and laugh at Screenland
Crown Center this fall.
Similar to Mystery Science Theater or the Benson Interruption, What Happened?! features a live screening of a film with guest comedians and their
hilarious commentary. Maxfield, a dedicated film critic, also gives background information about each film and the most probable reasons it has a
horrendously low rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
All About Steve, the film that won Sandra Bullock a Razzie, kicks off the 2014 season on September 19th. This "rom com" also garnered a Worst On-
Screen Couple award for Bullock and co-star Bradley Cooper.
Maxfield and company will roast 4 movies at Screenland Crown Center during its 2014 season, and each live riff will take on 3rd Fridays at 8:30pm:
September 19th: All About Steve
October 17th: Troll 2
November 21st: The Cat in the Hat
December 19th: Jingle All the Way

Call for Directors - OCTA - Deadline Sept 15
Directors wanted. Passion required!
The board of directors of the Olathe Civic Theater
Association (OCTA) is looking for directors to
bring to life an exciting 2015-2016 season. We're
inviting you to submit a slate of no more than
three scripts you'd like to direct at OCTA (any
additional scripts beyond the first three listed
will not be considered).
Send them to us at
octa.directors@olathetheatre.org, accompanied by
your theatrical resume, by September 15, 2014.
Additionally, please indicate the months of the
year, from late Fall 2015 to late Spring 2016,
that you are available.
This year OCTA is selecting its season based on
submissions from directors and selections from the
OCTA Season Selection Committee. We encourage all
directors to submit shows that you have a passion
for. An important consideration to keep in mind
when you submit shows to OCTA is that our season
is typically five shows, one or two of which may
be a musical. The rest of the season is usually a
mix of comedies and dramas. For the best chance of
having one of your scripts selected, please
include a variety of genres in your submission.
If, however, there's one show that's your dream
show, please submit it. We'll review it and see
if we can fit it into our season. At OCTA, we
respect and encourage your passion for the
material.
Also take into consideration that OCTA productions
have certainly stretched and put our wonderfully
intimate theatre facility to the test, but the
OCTA stage and theater are geared toward smaller
shows - although many of our past productions have
used imaginative staging within the space. Our
stage dimensions are available upon request to use
as a guideline as you consider your submissions.
You can also request a list of past shows to give
you a sense what we've done before. Don't be
afraid to submit a show that you see on the list!
We're open to reviving a production from our
history.
At OCTA we own our building. You have access to
the performance space for rehearsals from day one,
so you won't have to lug props or costumes from
one location to another. Also, we don't interfere
with your artistic decisions: Show us you can do
it and we'll help make it possible!
If one of your submissions is considered for our
season, we'll contact you to set up an interview.
OCTA is a great place to bring your theatrical
artistry alive, and we hope you'll consider
partnering with us to produce a great piece of
theater. We look forward to seeing your
submissions no later than September 15, 2014.
We will review the submissions and let candidates
know if we would like to set up and interview in
the weeks following mid-September. We aim to have
our season selected by December.
Sincerely,
Ellie DeShon
Chair, OCTA Season Selection Committee

Celtic Folklore Lecture and Workshop
Alcott Arts Center
Celtic Folklore Lecture by Jane Nichols: Aug 23: 7 pm Sat
Whether you are Celtic or just curious come to the Alcott Arts
Center at 180 S. 18th Street in Kansas City, KS (66102—just off
the I-70 Highway, opposite the Sunfresh Market Mall) on August
23, 2014 7-9 pm for a lecture on Celtic (always said with a hard
"C") Myth, given by Lady Fiona nic Gormliatha, an Irish
businesswoman from the time of Richard I (called Lionheart).
Lady Fiona's legal name is Jane Nichols, but she spends a lot of
her time in the world of the Society for Creative Anachronism, a
group that likes to re-create the Middle Ages. She has taught
this class since 1992, through the Communiversity program at
UMKC, also at the Lilies War, held the first full week of June out
at Smithville Lake where roughly 2000 or so people camp out &
get medieval with safety first fighting, archery, shopping, classes
& fireworks. In spite of this, it is a different class every time, a 6
page handout will be provided that will hopefully keep her on
track, the Four Great Holidays of the Celts & their major deities &
hero tales of Ireland, Wales & the Continent (those Celts got
around!).
But Wait, that's not all—remember that Fiona is a Medieval
businesswoman? Her knitted fiberart will be on display including
the Viking rune sweater she crafted (with runes) for her late
husband Phillippe de Mortain—and there will be finger food of
the Middle Ages, pickles, Dubliner cheese & hais (a confection
from the Crusades made of dates, nuts, breadcrumbs & sugar
held together with melted butter) and maybe some candied
nuts.
So come for an evening of stories & fun and get a small taste of
the Middle Ages!
Galleries are open during every event.
Sorry the Alcott is not yet ADA Accessible.

KC Improv Festival Workshops - Sept. 2014
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Rita Marks
Marketing Manager - 816-806-4000
Rita@kcimprov.com
Kansas City, MO, August 15, 2014 — KC Improv Festival Workshops
Weekend 1: Saturday, September 6
10 AM
Twinprov | Mind-Breaker (newish, experienced, veteran), Kick Comedy Theatre - 4010 Pennsylvania, KC MO 64111
Are in your head too much during a scene? Do you find yourself playing it safe on stage? Is improv beginning to feel like work? Then it's time for you get your mind broken, Vrazel-style. As improvisers gain experience and skill, we become safe and complacent, and scenes become predictable and unsatisfying. In this workshop, you'll learn practical techniques for silencing your inner critic, destroying expectations and obligatory playing, and unleashing the creative demon within. By the end, 15-year improv veterans Buck and Clint will have you Vrazelling out with them - making bold choices, taking risks, and best of all surprising yourself in the process.
Baby Wants Candy | BABY WANTS CANDY FOR BEGINNERS, ComedyCity - 3600 Broadway, KC MO 64111
Have you ever wanted to try improvising? Learn musical improv from the best! Internationally renowned award-winning Chicago and New York ensemble, Baby Wants Candy, invites you to learn how to improvise songs and play in a more free, fast and fun style.
1:30 PM
Twinprov | ZOOM!: Kickass Physicality, Kick Comedy Theatre - 4010 Pennsylvania, KC MO 64111
In improv we can be anywhere or anything – so why are so many scenes between two average people in an undefined space with a refrigerator? Ever wish the yammering would stop and the fun would begin? Buck and Clint Vrazel (Twinprov, Villain The Musical) Followed that desire to create ZOOM!, a completely wordless improv show inspired by movie special effects, kung-fu and anime, cartoons and Mr. Bean. It began as an experiment that became a class, then a group, and then ZOOM! played at the Chicago Improv Festival. Now you ZOOM! ZOOM! Techniques will open your eyes to possibility and supercharge your physicality and teamwork. Learn new ways to let your body do the talking, make the impossible real, defeat your enemies, and bend time and space to have adventures that would make the Doctor jealous.
Baby Wants Candy | BABY WANTS CANDY ADVANCED, ComedyCity - 3600 Broadway, KC MO 64111
Learn how to create strong characters, build comedic chemistry through dramatic and grounded scene work, play the game of the scene, and even how to improvise songs. This class is not for the novice - we will be moving at an intense, accelerated rate, providing personal feedback and critical analysis of the play at hand. A fundamental understanding of improvisation and/or other performing arts is strongly recommended.
Weekend 2: Saturday, September 13
10 AM
Rick Andrews | Living the Character (all levels), Off Center Theatre at Crown Center - 2450 Grand Blvd, KC MO 64111
Character is a fantastic tool; we'll spend our time in this workshop expanding our character ranges and committing hard to the simple consistent behaviors that will help create great characters. We'll use our bodies to connect to new ideas, and open up completely new worlds by connecting to who we are and how we behave in the scene.
1:30 PM
Rick Andrews | Play Game without Thinking (experienced, advanced), Off Center Theatre at Crown Center - 2450 Grand Blvd, KC MO 64111
Finding a game to a scene and heightening that game is one way to make a successful scene. However, pattern play can often get folks stuck in their heads. We'll spend less time thinking, "what's the game of this scene." and more time actually playing it. Focus in on the simple improv behaviors that will help us create fun patterns and rich, tight scenework.

Call for Open Auditions Bus Stop
River City Community Players announce a call for open auditions of Bus Stop by William Inge.
Auditions will be held Sept. 15 & 16 from 7 - 9 p.m. at the Riverfront Community Center located at 123 S. Esplanade, Leavenworth, KS; use the south entrance.
Directed by Richard Bayse.
Prepare to perform cold readings from the script. Bring a complete list of conflicts from September 15 - November 8. A current resume and headshot are welcome, but not required. Also, please arrive 10-15 minutes prior to the 7 p.m. start time to complete your audition information form.
During a howling snowstorm a bus from Kansas City stops at the roadside diner. Roads are blocked and the travelers are going to have to hole up until morning.
Cherie is the passenger with most to worry about. She's been pursued by a cowboy with a ranch in Montana and the romantic methods of a bull. The cafe owner and bus driver find time to develop a friendship of their own; a middle-age scholar comes to terms with himself; and a young girl in the cafe also gets her first taste of romance.
For more information contact The Leavenworth Performing Arts Center, 500 Delaware St, (913) 651-0027, www.rccplv.com

ensemble based works in the recent years (Fairy Tales' End, Our

School of Physical Theatre and is certified in physical comedy from

members of the community, so they can experience more
movement and change within their own work, which then will
extend beyond themselves.

Some of the best storytellers in Kansas City tell their wildest stories about late nights and bad decisions. Plus, the improvisers of The KC Improv Company act out those stories--live, on the fly.
The show is inspired by Drunk History on Comedy Central, but it happens right in front of your face. And the history we share is the personal history of the featured performers.
Come see stand-up comedians, actors, improvisers and other people who really know how to tell a story--all on one stage.
Just $8, or $5 with a student ID.
Adult Fare – 17+ to enter, 21 to drink. As always, no drink minimums.
Produced by The KC Improv Company. The KC Improv Company has over 14 years of specializing in both long-form and short-form improvisational comedy. The group has called the Kick Comedy Theater home for over two years. With business partners Green Room Burgers and Beer and the Westport Coffeehouse, the KC Improv Company strives to create a total food, drink, and entertainment experience. Each Saturday brings a different type of show, including the first Saturday's "The Gauntlet" and second Saturday's competition show, "Live in Front of a Studio Audience." Laugh Loud!
