Fair Ball: Negro Leagues in America

FAIR BALL: Negro Leagues in America
ON THE H & R BLOCK CITY STAGE AT UNION STATION
Presented by Theatre for Young America
July 7 through July 27, 2012

Just in time for Major League Baseball's All-Star game in Kansas City, Fair Ball: Negro Leagues in America is a musical play about the dramatic history and exemplary courage of the men and women who played against all odds of racial segregation and "Jim Crow" laws in the Negro Leagues baseball leagues. Gene Mackey wrote the script, with original music by Danny Cox.

Fair Ball: Negro Leagues in America opens at Theatre for Young America on July 7, 2012 and plays through July 27, 2012. Performances take place on the H&R Block City Stage, which is located on level B in Union Station Kansas City. Union Station's address is 30 W. Pershing Road in Kansas City, Missouri.

Single tickets may be reserved online at www.unionstation.org or by calling Union Station at 816.460.2020, or Theatre for Young America at 816.460.2083. The single ticket price is $8.00. Groups of 15 or more are $5.50 per person with a reservation. For group reservations, call 816.460.2020 or 816.460.2083. This one-hour play is suitable for all ages; all lovers of baseball and all those who wish to celebrate the accomplishments of this remarkable baseball league.

Theatre for Young America is offering a SPECIAL PRICE FOR THE ALL STAR WEEKEND PERFORMANCES on July 7, 8 or 9. Anyone who shows an All Star Fan Fest ticket stub at the Union Station ticketing counter will receive $4.00 off the regular ticket price.

Set in the locker room of the abandoned stadium, this musical production raises the ghosts of great baseball players of the Negro Leagues to play one last great contest to conquer the supposed supremacy of the all-white Major Leagues. An all-star dream team, managed by Rube Foster, includes Leroy Satchel" Paige, James "Cool Papa" Bell, Wilbur "Bullet" Rogan, Josh Gibson, Jackie Robinson, and Toni Stone, a female player who held her own in the largely male world of professional baseball.

Fair Ball's songwriter, Danny Cox, performs in the play. Danny Cox began his professional music career in 1960 as an 18 year old performing on a Hootenanny Folk Tour. In the early 1970s, Danny Cox recorded for the ABC-Dunhill, Casablanca, and the MGM labels. In 1969, Danny partnered a company called Good Karma Productions, which managed the acts of Brewer and Shipley, and the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, and his own career. Danny was a co-owner of the Cowtown Ballroom from 1970 to 1973. He was a regular on the Allen Luden and Danny Kaye TV shows and has been the opening act for Ray Charles and had Steve Martin as his opening act on tour. Danny is a featured performer in the documentary Cowtown Ballroom…Sweet Jesus. He narrated the KCPT documentary, Ain't Seen Nothing Like It Since: The Kansas City Monarchs. For Theatre for Young America he has previously created original music for The Legend of John Henry, El Gato Sin Amigos, Trains Across America, and Black Cowboy in t!
he Old West.

Also appearing in Fair Ball is Lonnie McFadden, a nationally recognized tap-dancer, singer and all around entertainer. Lonnie returns to Theatre for Young America after making his TYA debut last year in Monarchs of KC. Lonnie McFadden, along with brother Ronnie, is part of the famed McFadden Brothers. The duo performs all over the world and has appeared on the same bill with entertainment giants such as The Count Basie Orchestra, Miles Davis, Winton Marsalis, and Sammy Davis, Jr. Patrons can catch Lonnie at The Phoenix Piano Bar and Grill on weekends where he is currently performing.

The cast also includes Damon Patterson, Evan Lovelace and Chioma Anyanwu, and a live band of musicians.

The musical is a complete revision of The Monarchs of KC, produced at TYA last season, including new songs, characters and true stories from a tumultuous and richly entertaining era of baseball history. A National Endowment for the Arts grant makes this new production possible.

Starlight Addams Family release

THE ADDAMS FAMILY, a new musical comedy, makes its Kansas City premiere at Starlight Theatre July 3-8

Musical is based on beloved characters created by cartoonist Charles Addams

Starlight Theatre continues its 62nd anniversary Broadway season with a creepy and kooky musical for the whole family. THE ADDAMS FAMILY, based on the bizarre and beloved family of characters created by legendary cartoonist Charles Addams, will make its Kansas City premiere July 3-8 at Starlight.

"It's a very funny show about families that has been revised for the national tour – it's better and even funnier now than it was on Broadway," said Denton Yockey, Starlight president and executive producer. "The touring production has several new songs that were not featured in the New York run and, overall, it is a highly entertaining comedy that appeals to multi-generational audiences."

THE ADDAMS FAMILY features every father's nightmare: Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family. A man her parents have never met. And if that weren't upsetting enough, she confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he's never done before - keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday's "normal" boyfriend and his parents. The musical comedy is suitable for most audiences; content information is available at www.kcstarlight.com

Starlight audiences attending the July 4 performance of THE ADDAMS FAMILY will be treated to a spectacular fireworks celebration immediately following the performance.

ABOUT THE ADDAMS FAMILY MUSICAL
THE ADDAMS FAMILY, which began performances in March 2010 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre and ran through December 2011, immediately became one of Broadway's biggest hits. Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune described the production as "classic, full-tilt, fast paced, old-fashioned musical comedy!" and John Simon of Bloomberg News called it "uproarious! A glitzy-gloomy musical entirely worthy of the macabre drawings by Charles Addams." The first national tour launched last fall in New Orleans and has played over 300 performances to date.

The book of THE ADDAMS FAMILY is by Jersey Boys creators Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice (also Tony-nominated for Peter and the Starcatcher); music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa (The Wild Party). The production is directed and designed (sets and costumes) by Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch, with production supervision by Jerry Zaks and choreography by Sergio Trujillo. The production features lighting design by Natasha Katz (2012 Tony Award winner for Once), sound design by Acme Sound Partners and puppetry by Basil Twist.

THE ADDAMS FAMILY musical is based on the work of Charles Addams. In a prolific career spanning six decades, Addams created several thousand cartoons, sketches and drawings, many of which were published in The New Yorker. But it was his creation of characters that came to be known as The Addams Family that brought Addams his greatest acclaim. With a unique style that combined the twisted, macabre and just plain weird with charm, wit and enchantment, Addams' drawings have entertained millions worldwide and served as the inspiration for multiple television series and motion pictures.

RAIN at Starlight June 19,20

RAIN Returns to Starlight Theatre June 19 and 20

By popular demand, Starlight Theatre brings back RAIN - A Tribute to the Beatles June 19 and 20. The internationally-acclaimed Beatles concert comes direct from their phenomenally successful Broadway engagement.

As "the next best thing to seeing The Beatles!" (Associated Press), RAIN performs the full range of The Beatles' discography live onstage, including the most complex and challenging songs that The Beatles themselves recorded in the studio, but never performed for an audience. Together longer than The Beatles, RAIN has mastered every song, gesture and nuance of the legendary foursome, delivering a totally live, note-for-note performance that's as infectious as it is transporting.

"I am so excited that RAIN is returning to Starlight. They were a big hit when they were here before and we've enlarged our screens to make this multi-media experience even better," said Denton Yockey, president and executive producer of Starlight Theatre.

Winner of the 2011 Drama Desk for Outstanding Revue, RAIN - A Tribute to The Beatles
currently stars "Paul" Mac Ruffing (vocals, bass, guitar, piano); "George" Joe
Bithorn (vocals, lead guitar, guitar synthesizer); "Ringo" Ralph Castelli (vocals, drums, percussion); "John" Steve Landes (vocals, guitar, piano, harmonica); and Chris Smallwood who is part of the ensemble and plays keyboards on stage with the band.

From the early hits to later classics (I Want To Hold Your Hand, Hard Day's Night, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Let It Be, Come Together, Hey Jude and more), this adoring tribute takes audience members back to a time when all you needed was love and a little help from your friends!

Called "uncanny," RAIN are a quartet of fine musicians in their own right…as The Beatles, they triumph!" (The Boston Herald), like The Beatles, the onstage members of RAIN are not only supreme musicians, but electrifying performers.

TICKET AND PERFORMANCE INFORMATION
Single show tickets to RAIN - A Tribute to the Beatles, are available for $10 to $85 online at www.kcstarlight.com, by calling (816) 363.STAR (7827) or at the Starlight Box Office, 4600 Starlight Road, Kansas City, Mo. Both performances begin at 8 p.m. A pre-show dinner will be available in The Diamonds VIP Club.

Premium Seats are available for the first five rows of the theater for $145. The price of the ticket includes free general parking and a $50 tax deductible donation per seat which goes to support Starlight Theatre, a not-for-profit organization.

Discount prices for groups of 15 or more are also available. For information about group pricing, contact group sales manager Stacey Million at (816) 997-1137 or stacey.million@kcstarlight.com.

STARLIGHT THEATRE
Starlight Theatre seats approximately 8,000 and is located in Swope Park. In 2011, Starlight Theatre was selected as the "Favorite Performing Arts Venue" and the "Favorite Concert/Live Music Venue" in the Kansas City Convention & Visitors Association's Visitors' Choice Awards program. Starlight also received a Gold Award for "Best Performing Arts Venue" and Silver Award for "Best Theater" in Ingram's 2011 Best of Business Kansas City Awards, as well as the award for "Best Live Theater Venue" in the KC Magazine City's Best 2011 competition.

Contains Strong Language and Themes. A KANSAS CITY
THEATRE COMPANY PREMIERE
Performed at the Just Off Broadway Theatre

ORDINARY DAYS by Adam Gwon
March 15-31
Directed by Tiffany Garrison-Schweigert
From one of musical theatre's most exciting new
composers comes ORDINARY DAYS, a refreshingly
honest and funny musical about making real
connections in the city that never sleeps (but
probably should at some point.) ORDINARY DAYS
tells the story of four young New Yorkers whose
lives intersect as they search for fulfillment,
happiness, love and cabs. Through a score of
vibrant and memorable songs, their experiences
ring startlingly true to life. ORDINARY DAYS is an
original musical for anyone who's ever struggled
to appreciate the simple things in a complex
place. With equal doses of humor and poignancy, it
celebrates how 8.3 million individual stories
combine in unexpected ways to make New York City
such a unique and extraordinary home.
A KANSAS CITY THEATRE PREMIERE

A Feminine Ending by Sarah Treem
May 10-18
Directed by Taylor St. John

Amanda, twenty-five, wants to be a great composer.
But at the moment, she's living in New York City
and writing advertising jingles to pay the rent
while her fiancé, Jack, pursues his singing
career. So when Amanda's mother, Kim, calls one
evening from New Hampshire and asks for her help
with something she can't discuss over the phone,
Amanda is only too happy to leave New York. Once
home, Kim reveals that she's leaving Amanda's
father and needs help packing. Amanda balks and
ends up (gently) hitting the postman, who happens
to be her first boyfriend. They spend the night
together in an apple orchard, where Amanda tries
to tell Billy how her life got sidetracked. It has
something to do with being a young woman in a
profession that only recognizes famous men. Billy
acts like he might have the answer, but doesn't.
Neither does Amanda's mother. Or, for that
matter, her father. A Feminine Ending is a gentle,
bittersweet comedy about a girl who knows what she
wants but not quite how to get it. Her parents are
getting divorced, her fiancée is almost famous,
her first love reappears, and there's a lot of
noise in her head but none of it is music. Until
the end. A KANSAS CITY THEATRE PREMIERE

BRIEF SYNOPSIS OF THE SHOW: The timeless enchantment of a magical fairy tale is reborn with the Rodgers & Hammerstein hallmarks of originality, charm and elegance. Originally presented on television in 1957 starring Julie Andrews, Rodgers & Hammerstein's CINDERELLA was the most widely viewed program in the history of the medium. Its recreation in 1965 starring Lesley Ann Warren was no less successful in transporting a new generation to the miraculous kingdom of dreams-come-true, and so was a second remake in 1997, which starred Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother. As adapted for the stage, with great warmth and more than a touch of hilarity, the hearts of children and adults alike still soar when the slipper fits.

Sudeikis's Creation -- The Most Artistic Improv Show in Kansas City -- at the Fringe and at The Kick Comedy Theater

The KC Improv Company

The KC Improv Company's JTS Brown show: Jul 7-27:
9 pm Fri-Sat; 6 pm Wed; 8 pm Sat

Jason Sudeikis learned to improvise in Kansas
City, then went to Chicago and co-created a new
form of improv performance that is still taught in
Chicago today. Now, the most accomplished KC
improv troupe is performing the legendary piece,
the JTS Brown.

Named after the brand of bourbon that fast Eddie
drinks in "The Hustler," the format allows maximum
freedom for the performers to explore a theme,
while keeping the energy high and the pace fast.
Sudeikis created the form along with Ike
Barinholtz of "Mad TV" fame.

Sudeikis, now a long-time cast member of "Saturday
Night Live," is scheduled to perform in the KC
Improv Festival -- produced by the KC Improv Co. -
- again this September. It is rumored that he
will leave SNL before it begins again in the fall.
This summer, he will appear in the highly
anticipated "The Campaign," a comedy that also
stars Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis.

The KC Improv Company (formerly Improv-Abilities)
has been doing it however the audience wanted it
since 2000. Tonight they do an adults-only
improvised show featuring fast-paced games, plus
theatrical, Chicago-style long-form improvisation.

Directed by Tim Marks, Scott Connerly, Keith
Curtis.

Everyday Rapture
By Dick Scanlan and Sherie Rene Scott

Directed by Jerry Jay Cranford
Musical Direction by Jeremy Watson

Featuring Katie Gilchrist with Chioma Anyanwu, Christina Burton and Bryan LaFave

From the Wheat Fields, to the Great White Way

A semi-autobiographical stage memoir by Sherie Rene Scott, this is the story of a woman's psycho-sexual-spiritual journey that separates her mostly Mennonite past from her mostly Manhattan future. She travels from Topeka, Kansas to New York City; with a disturbing detour through YouTube. Filled with familiar tunes, this musical follows Sherie's road to Broadway semi-stardom. This is the first production in the nation since Sherie premiered the show on Broadway.

This production is made possible by grants from Courtney S. Turner Charitable Trust, Hall Family Foundation, Estelle S. & Robert A. Long Ellis Foundation and Theater League.

Auditions Happy Days - A New Musical

River City Community Players announces auditions for HAPPY DAYS, a new musical
Music and Lyrics by Paul Williams, Book by Garry Marshall

Directed by Nino Casisi
Music Directed by Deana Wagoner

Goodbye gray skies, hello blue! Happy days are here again with Richie, Potsie, Ralph Malph and the unforgettable "king of cool" Arthur "The Fonz" Fonzarelli. Based on the hit Paramount Pictures television series, Happy Days, A New Musical reintroduces one of America's best loved families, the Cunninghams -- yes, Howard, Marion and Joanie are here too -- to a whole new generation of kids and parents. The famed drive-in malt shop and number one hangout, Arnold's, is in danger of demolition. So the gang teams up to save it with a dance contest and a TV-worthy wrestling match. Even Pinky Tuscadero, Fonzie's childhood sweetheart, returns to help and -- lo and behold! -- they rekindle their old flame. Happy Days, A New Musical, with amazing music from Oscar-winner Paul Williams and a book by the TV series original creator Garry Marshall, brings back the good ol' days of 1959 Milwaukee complete with varsity sweaters, hula hoops and jukebox sock-hoppin' fun. This perfectly family f!
riendly musical will have you rockin' and rollin' all week long!

AUDITION DATES: Monday, June 4 and Tuesday, June 5, 2012 from 6:30-10 p.m., (both days).

Open auditions will consist of individual auditions of prepared music (see What To Prepare)

Choreography being taught and "performed" for choreographer.

CALLBACKS: Wednesday, June 6 – 6:30-10 p.m., (By Director Invitation Only)

Callbacks will consist of cold readings from the script and songs by character from the libretto.

Dress accordingly for a dance audition (regardless if the character you are auditioning for dances or not)

LOCATION: River City Community Players, 5th & Delaware Streets, Leavenworth, KS 66048

PRODUCTION DATES: July 27, 28, August 3, 4, 10 and 11, 2012 at 8 p.m., & August 5, 2012 at 2 p.m.

WHAT TO PREPARE: Please prepare 32 bars of a Broadway style selection in your vocal range (not one from HAPPY DAYS, A NEW MUSICAL). Please make sure it is completely memorized and you have a copy for the accompanist with your vocal part highlighted. NO ACCAPELLA singing. Also, no music from a device (i.e. CD, I-POD, MP3, etc.) Also, try to be familiar with the concept of the TV show, the characters and music from the musical (if possible). The more you are prepared, the better chances you have to get a role. Dress accordingly for a short dance audition, including proper footwear (jazz shoes or dance shoes if going for a dancer), whether the character you are auditioning for dances or not.

SPECIAL SKILLS: If you have special skills (riding a motorcycle, roller-skating, wrestling, riding a skateboard or bicycle, working a yo-yo, cheerleading, doing the splits, baton twirling), please list them on your audition form. These will be utilized in this production of Happy Days – a New Musical.

BRING: Current Resume and a complete list of conflicts from June 11 – August 11. If you have conflicts from July 16 – August 11, you may not be cast in HAPPY DAYS, A NEW MUSICAL. Dedication and commitment to River City Community Players, the director and fellow actors is of utmost importance. Headshots are welcome, but not required. Rehearsals will start on Monday, June 11 and run Monday-Friday with weekend set construction days.

{PR} June's KC Stage now on sale

June's issue, on it's way to subscribers, is just filled to the brim with fun and exciting stuff. In fact, we added an extra four pages! If you would like to see a copy, single issues are available for $5 at the Barnes & Noble on the Plaza, and are also available to buy online at http://kcstage.magcloud.com/.

Here's a sample of what's in store for subscribers:

* Spotlight on Marcus Mull: "Can you describe a typical day at work? Running a small business has new surprises every day. Helping run a small theatre business never has a typical day." In this Q&A by Jeanne Beechwood, you'll hear all about Martin City Melodrama's Marcus Mull.

* Gladstone Theatre in the Park Celebrates 25 Years: "In 1988, Van and Susie Ibsen of Ibsen Dance Theatre decided that their community needed local opportunities to participate in theatre so that they wouldn't have to drive so far south." Jamie Lin covers the beginning and history of Gladstone Theatre in the Park.

* Hanging Fringe on the Arch: St. Louis Starts Fringe Festival: "I don't know if this is happening in the rest of the country, but I know in St. Louis definitely there's been this incredible wave of the creative culture, and this real hunger for things that are new and things that are visceral and things that really push the status quo and really challenge what is it to make art and what is it to have a distinct culture and what is it that we have that defines that." Angie Fiedler talks with Emily Piro about the new Fringe Festival in St. Louis in June. You can also read this article at her blog - http://angiefsutton.wordpress.com/.

* Heart of America Shakespeare Festival: 20 Years Under the Stars: "On a rainy June evening in 1993, the inaugural production of the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival, 'The Tempest', opened in Southmoreland Park. For Marilyn Strauss, the festival's founder, this was 'such stuff / As dreams are made on.' Yet realizing an outdoor, professional, free summer Shakespeare production was a hard-won battle, and no one could predict its future over the next two decades." So starts Thomas Canfield's article on the history of the HASF, celebrating 20 years this summer.

* The View from the Bench: Two Weeks as a Reality Show Drama Critic: "The brainchild of Hanson and Erich McGrew, the show takes the classic 'talent show' format and brings it into the theatre world. Five local playwrights have been selected: over the next two weeks, they will produce plays to order, with stringent conditions and a merciless deadline." So writes Kelly Luck of her experiences as being a judge of Project Playwright.

* The recipients of the Cappies and the Blue Star Awards, both celebrating ten years.

* Notes: six arts news snippets. More arts news gets posted on our blog ( www.kcstage.com/blog ) regularly.

All this and the usual listings of performances, auditions, and film clips - just for only $4 a month if you become a subscriber for one year. More information online at www.kcstage.com/subscribe.

And once again, we're having our Tony Awards contest: Do you have a flair for knowing who will win? More information at http://kwiksurveys.com?u=Tony2012 - but hurry, the contest ends June 10!
