"The Merchant of Venice" is the story of money lending, religious faith, and husband finding. In Venice we meet Shylock, a Jewish merchant and father, and Antonio, a Christian merchant, who have money-lending issues, which result in the call for a literal 'pound of flesh' as repayment. In the neighboring city of Belmont we meet Portia, a wealthy unmarried lady whose marriage prospects are dictated by her dead father's wishes. Directed by Anna Jennings. Featuring Jeff Shehan, Aaron Gotzon, Frank Presler, London Smith, Khalid Johnson, Liz Swick, Timothy Willett, Erik Johnsen, Kelsey Matthias, Heather Hare, Jen Morris, Sean Hill, and Ronald Davis and Zachary Weaver. Emporia State University Theatre presents
its 41st Homecoming Scholarship Musical, All Shook Up!
Joe DiPietro's All Shook Up! kicks off our 100th season of theatre
at Emporia State University. A musical comedy by the writer of
Memphis and I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, All Shook
Up! is built around hit songs made famous by Elvis Presley.
Set in 1955, a young female mechanic, Natalie (Kayce Holoubek,
Deerfield,WI) who dreams of true love works in her father's
(Brandon Jensen, Junior, Salina) carshop. Natalie and a
mysterious guitarist, Chad (Nathan Dale Short, Paola,
Sophomore) form an unlikely pair that inspires a small town to
open its eyes to the magic of romance and the power of rock &
roll. Along the way, Chad recruits Natalie's lovesick best friend,
Dennis (Ethan Platt, Junior, Gardener) to be his sidekick in his
quest to make the local museum director, Sandra (Annie
Rosenbrook, Senior, Kansas City) fall in love with him.
In this small town somewhere in mid-America, the Mayor,
Matilda (Sherri Allen, Senior, Independence) has passed laws
against music, public displays of affection, and anything rock 'n
roll. While keeping a stern eye over the town, Earl (Paul
Clements), Matilda's assistant, falls deeply in love with her. Sylvia
(Chrystal Foxworth, Senior, Junction City) runs the local Honkey
Tonk in this small town where she and her daughter try to earn a
honest living. To her mother and the Mayor's disappointment,
Lorraine (Kylie Geiman, Junior, Louisburg) falls instantaneously,
hopelessly in love with Dean (Evan Eisenbarth, Sophomore,
Cassoday), the mayor's only son.
All Shook Up will be under the direction of Jim and Lindy Bartruff.
Penny Speedie will be the vocal coach and music director.
Student designer John Alfrey will aid Nancy Pontius in bringing
this 50's town to life. Costume shop manager, Amanda Dura, will
also design the costumes. Aubrey Near (Senior, Independence)
and Samantha Lambert (Junior, Rantovl) will serve as the stage
management team. Ron Fowlkes will design the lights, and Indy
Darbro will be incharge of sound design. Doug Dion, the Scene
Shop Manager will be the technical director.
Borrowing some familiar plot devices from Shakespeare, the
score highlights classics like "Heartbreak Hotel," "Love Me
Tender," "Don't Be Cruel," "Can't Help Falling in Love," and the
title song. Emporia State Theatre's production of All Shook Up!
will premier October 10th and run through October 13th in
Albert Taylor Hall with nighttime performances at 7:30 and a
matinee performance on October 13th at 2:00. Call the university

The Coterie Stages First of Three World Premieres for 35th Season
The Coterie opens its 35th anniversary season with the World Premiere of Red Badge Variations, an emotional and thought-provoking new play that takes the classic soldier archetypes established in Stephen Crane's classic Civil War novel, The Red Badge of Courage, and sets them in Afghanistan today. Written by Melissa Cooper and directed by Kyle Hatley, Red Badge Variations runs September 17 – October 5, 2013.
ABOUT THE PLAY
A young recruit, Henry Fleming, arrives at a remote military outpost in Afghanistan. There's been a recent death in the tight-knit group of soldiers there, so the new recruit feels like the odd-man-out. As we drop in on these soldiers at various points during their year in deployment, we begin to understand their unique personalities until, as it turns out, they must confront the defining experience of their lives.
Coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, Red Badge Variations offers a contemporary response to Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage by taking the archetypal soldier characters from the novel and resetting them in today's war in Afghanistan. The play does not attempt to establish a pro- or anti- position on the nature of war, but instead focuses on the experiences of the young combat soldiers and how life-and-death situations can reveal truths about a person's character. "Red Badge Variations is the story of five young men who go to war," explains playwright Melissa Cooper. "Full of energy, humor, and zest for life, they find themselves changed in profound ways by their deployment. I'm grateful to the veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan who gave me feedback as I worked on the play. American soldiers continue to fight and come home to a country that sometimes forgets it is at war, so I hope the play serves to foster dialogue between civilians and soldiers."
When asked why Red Badge Variations was selected to open The Coterie's 35th anniversary season, Producing Artistic Director Jeff Church explained, "I think we may be the only theatre for young audiences in this country to produce a play depicting our soldiers in today's war. Giving young people a chance to see young soldiers in The Coterie's intimate performance space will give them insight into a world far away from us. We've been validated in our effort to bring this humane play to young audiences by a lovely award from the National Endowment for the Arts we recently received." In response to The Coterie's selection of this world premiere as its season kick-off, Melissa Cooper stated, "I'm proud to be part of The Coterie's vision of producing new American plays for an intergenerational audience."

SYNOPSIS:
"The clashing sounds and pulsing rhythms of New
York City underscore this landmark "concept" show,
considered by many to have inaugurated the modern
era of musical theatre. COMPANY follows our anti-
hero bachelor Robert as he makes his way through a
series of encounters with April (the stewardess),
Kathy (the girl who's going to marry someone
else), Marta (the "peculiar" one), as well as with
his married friends.
"On the night of his 35th birthday, confirmed
bachelor Robert contemplates his unmarried state.
In vignette after hilarious vignette, we are
introduced to "those good and crazy people," his
married friends, as Robert weighs the pros and
cons of married life. In the end, he realizes

KC IMPROV FESTIVAL SHOWCASES LOCAL COMEDY INSTITUTIONS
The two best-known comedy troupes in Kansas City—ComedyCity
and the KC Improv Company—will share the spotlight at the KC
Improv Festival, September 6-14 at the Off Center Theatre at
Crown Center and the Kick Comedy Theater in Westport.
ComedyCity, a 26-year-old business with a theater in the Westport
Flea Market, will put on their signature show, Major League
Improv, both Friday nights. The KC Improv Company, who produce
the festival and perform weekly at the Kick Comedy Theater, plays
both Saturdays and during a Thursday night benefit. Clay Morgan,
ComedyCity's owner, and Tim Marks, the head of the KC Improv
Company, will both emcee shows. Festival planning members play
with one—or both—groups.
Sounds like a lot of cross pollination, right? But the KC comedy
scene used to not be so...collaborative.
"When I started, there were a couple of troupes that were pretty
proprietary about their people," Tim says. "I like our people to do
other things and learn and get better, whether it's another improv
troupe or scripted work or acting classes."
Clay agrees: "I grew up in improv learning an 'us against them'
philosophy. If you weren't with ComedyCity [formerly
ComedySportz] you were against us. I realized that when I took
over, I had to keep the door open."
Both troupes have large casts to support their weekly
performances. They both teach classes, do private shows and lead
corporate workshops. They even came from the same place—the
KC Improv Company, formerly Improv-Abilities, was founded by a
member of ComedySportz. But even with all the similarities (and
shared troupe members), each has a distinct point of view.
ComedyCity's Major League Improv is a competition between two
uniform-clad teams. They perform short, fast-paced improv
games with heavy audience participation. "ComedyCity puts our
audience first," Clay says. "Performing short form improv, we
sometimes get other improvisers and groups looking down their
noses at us for not performing 'art.' That is okay with me. I know
just how talented my cast is. I have watched the audiences leave
happily amazed at what we do. And they come back, to be amazed
again and again."
The KC Improv Company also performs games sometimes, but in
recent years has focused on performing and teaching long-form
improvisation. Their sets may spin out for 20-30 minutes from a
single suggestion, weaving together different scenes and recurring
characters. "We have performed all over the country at festivals
and private events, and we've been pretty heavily influenced by
groups like The Reckoning, UCB, iO groups, and by Second City
alums. We enjoy playing games to start out the show, and then
opening it up later in the show to do a coherent piece of
improvised theater that is sometimes more fulfilling than a three-
minute game."
Between the two groups, they've attracted hundreds of performers,
and spawned dozens of spinoff acts. The KC Improv Festival brings
them all together again.
"The festival allows us to see the different troupes perform and we
can learn from them," Clay says.
Tim adds: "It's a big event, with bigger crowds than we usually play
for. For a lot of groups, the biggest crowd of the year. And then we
all hang out late at night...
"Usually too late."

During the war Joe Keller and Herbert Deever ran a machine shop which made airplane parts. Deever was sent to prison because the firm turned out defective parts, causing the deaths of many men. Keller went free and made a lot of money.
The twin shadows of this catastrophe and the fact that the young Keller son was reported missing during the war dominate the action.
The love affair of Chris Keller and Ann Deever, the bitterness of George Deever returned from the war to find his father in prison and his father's partner free, are all set in a structure of almost unbearable power.
The climax showing the reaction of a son to his guilty father is fitting conclusion to a play electrifying in its intensity.

Music Theatre for Young People of Kansas City will be holding auditions for its 2014 Winter Show: HAIRSPRAY
MTYP will be holding auditions for its annual winter show,
Hairspray, on Friday, October 11th from 5 pm – 10 pm and
Saturday, October 12th from 10 am – 6 pm. There will be a dance
call and vocal auditions both days. Callbacks will be held after the
auditions on Saturday. Auditions will be held in Room 108 in
UMKC's Performing Arts Center (4949 Cherry St. Kansas City, MO
64110). For the vocal audition, please prepare a 16-32 bar
selection in the style of the show and bring your sheet music. Ages
12-18 are eligible to audition.
Hairspray will be directed by Cary Danielson and will be music
directed by Julie Danielson, MTYP's Artistic and Resident Music
Director. Roy Lightner, a New York City choreographer and faculty
member at Ithaca College, will be choreographing. Rehearsals will
be held at UMKC from December 26th – January 3rd. The
performances will be January 3rd – 5th at UMKC's White Recital Hall.
It's 1962 in Baltimore, and the lovable plus-size teen Tracy
Turnblad has only one desire -- to dance on the popular Corny
Collins Show. When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed
from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound
power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of
heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network, all without
denting her 'do!
