Call for directors for our 2016/17 season
Directors wanted. Passion required!
The board of directors of the Olathe Civic
Theater Association (OCTA) is looking for
directors to bring to life an exciting 2016-
2017 season. We're inviting you to submit a
slate of no more than three scripts you'd like
to direct at OCTA (any additional scripts
beyond the first three listed will not be
considered).
Send them to us via pgleondedis@yahoo.com ,
accompanied by your theatrical resume, by
September 30, 2015. Additionally, please
indicate the months of the year, from late Fall
2016 to late Spring 2017, that you are
available.
This year OCTA is selecting its season based on
submissions from directors and selections from
the OCTA Season Selection Committee. We
encourage all directors to submit shows that
you have a passion for. An important
consideration to keep in mind when you submit
shows to OCTA is that our season is typically
five shows, one or two of which may be a
musical. The rest of the season is usually a
mix of comedies and dramas. For the best chance
of having one of your scripts selected, please
include a variety of genres in your submission.
If, however, there's one show that's your dream
show, please submit it. We'll review it and
see if we can fit it into our season. At OCTA,
we respect and encourage your passion for the
material.
Also take into consideration that OCTA
productions have certainly stretched and put
our wonderfully intimate theatre facility to
the test, but the OCTA stage and theater are
geared toward smaller shows - although many of
our past productions have used imaginative
staging within the space.
At OCTA we own our building. You have access to
the performance space for rehearsals from day
one, so you won't have to lug props or costumes
from one location to another. Also, we don't
interfere with your artistic decisions: Show us
you can do it and we'll help make it possible!
If one of your submissions is considered for
our season, we'll contact you to set up an
interview. OCTA is a great place to bring your
theatrical artistry alive, and we hope you'll
consider partnering with us to produce a great
piece of theater. We look forward to seeing
your submissions no later than September 30,
2015.
We will review the submissions and let
candidates know if we would like to set up and
interview in the weeks following mid-September.
We aim to have our season selected by December.

Schoolhouse Rock Live Kicks Off OCTA's 2015-16 Season
Olathe Civic Theatre Association
Full of energy, humor, music, dancing and some very valuable grammar lessons, Schoolhouse Rock Live kicks off Olathe Civic Theatre Association's 2015-2016 season with a bang. The show is directed by Shelly Stewart Banks and runs Sept. 11-27.
It's a project packed with memories for anyone who remembers the iconic 70s Saturday morning Schoolhouse Rock cartoon that taught history, grammar, math, science and politics through clever songs. The musical brings all of it to life onstage, chronicling the story of Tom, a nerve-wracked school teacher nervous about his first day of teaching. Tom tries to relax by watching TV when various characters representing facets of his personality emerge from the set and show him how to win his students over with imagination and music, through such beloved Schoolhouse Rock songs as Just A Bill, Lolly, Lolly, Lolly and Conjunction Junction.
For Banks, Schoolhouse Rock is pure nostalgia.
"For me, Schoolhouse Rock is a great shared experience of my generation," Banks said. "It's how I, and all the kids my age, accidentally learned stuff. I love every bit of it – the cartoons, the songs, the message, the teaching of math, grammar, science and history."
Banks also has the opportunity to bring both familiar and new perspectives together on the show.
"While the musical director and I grew up on Schoolhouse Rock, a lot of this young cast did not," Banks explained. "They are approaching it with fresh eyes and ears, bringing their own experiences, music influences, and 2015 sensibilities to the show. I look forward to seeing how we marry the two different generations of perspective to create our own brand of this show."
The cast includes: Guy Gardner (Tom); Delano Mendoza (Joe); Micayla Miller (Shulie); Kristen Altoro (Dina); and Jennifer Coville (Dori).
The rest of the production staff includes: Kevin Hershberger (music direction) Guy Gardner (choreography); Rita Marks (stage manager); J. Patrick Inlow (lights/video design); Ken Schmidt (set design); and Kerry Schafer (costumes).
In honor of Deaf Awareness Week, OCTA will partner with the Hearing Loss Association of America-Kansas City (HLAA-KC) to provide an open caption performance at the Sept. 26 show, with seats reserved for a select group of hearing-impaired attendees.
The show runs for three weekends Sept. 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, and 25, 26, 27 with Friday and Saturday night performances at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.
Tickets and more information are available at olathetheatre.org or reservations may be made by calling the theatre hotline at 913-782-2990.
Members of the press with inquiries should contact Victoria Hoffman at victorialatoya72@gmail.com or 816-728-2048.

Bye, Bye Birdie - Second Weekend
Don't let your last opportunity to catch this show get away. Tickets are still available.
"This production has heart, discipline, and talent. All the pieces fit. The actors are alive and engaged, the scene changes flow smoothly and efficiently, and the music (live band!) supports and empowers the action.
"The acting is spot on for full development of the action. The juxtaposition of Albert and Rose, vs Kim and Hugo, vs Parent and Child in the book gives the actors a framework to play and have fun with. The enthusiasm of the cast members is obvious. The choreography is tight, this cast spent time rehearsing the dances and its obvious. These people care about what they're doing.
"The set is simple, colorful and accessible. The scene changes are smooth quick, and integrated nicely with the lights. This tech crew worked like a finely tuned machine.
"MacAffee parents & younger brother: Absolutely hilarious. So talented. Wonderful interactions with each other. Father was brilliantly angry when trying to find Kim at the ice house, and hilarious when in awe of Ed Sullivan. "Hymn for a Sunday Evening" by the MacAffee family was beautiful, and probably the best sang song in the show. "Kids" & "Kids, Reprise"
was done with a lot of enthusiasm and talent. A lot of stand-out performances from this family. ," are but a few of the comments received on this show.
Book by Michael Stewart; music by Charles Strouse; lyrics by Lee Adams; originally produced by Edward Padula. Directed by Tisha Swart-Entwistle
Conrad Birdie, an Elvis Presley type, has a pompadour and thick sideburns; he wears gaudy gold costumes and speaks in a rugged voice. Albert Peterson, his agent, is a very pleasant mild mannered young man. Albert's faithful secretary Rose Alvarez keeps him and Birdie moving forward in the world. Rosie concocts one final national publicity plan before Conrad's induction.
Conrad will bid a typical American teen-age girl goodbye with an all-American kiss. Kim MacAfee in Sweet Apple, Ohio wins the honor. All of the phones in her town are already busy during The Telephone Hour as Kim has just been pinned to Hugo, a local boy. She is a pretty girl of fifteen and sings with spring like ardor How Lovely to Be a Woman, as she pulls on the plaid woolen socks and the baggy mustard colored sweater considered stylish and popular among young ladies.
The arrival of Birdie in Sweet Apple causes people of all ages to swoon. Birdie says that his success is due to the fact that he is Honestly Sincere when he sings, and the quiet little town goes into a spin. The MacAfee household is completely upset by the visiting celebrity. It is decided that Birdie will give his One Last Kiss on the Ed Sullivan show. Kim's father who laments the whole uproar, tries to break into the act and behaves like a ham on the TV show. Hymn for a Sunday Evening is a salute to the greater glory of Ed Sullivan.
Birdie becomes disgusted with his life and goes out on the town with the teenagers. He feels tense with Albert and is tired of being supervised. The parents of Sweet Apple cannot understand the new generation and express this in Kids. Rosie, still waiting for that band of gold from Albert after eight years, invades a Shriners' meeting. An extremely hilarious ballet ensues. She then decides to become the Latin American spitfire that she is painted as, by Albert's lead-footed catastrophe-ridden mother. She is determined to become Spanish Rose. Kim is reunited with Hugo, and Rose with Albert in the lovely number Rosie. Other hit numbers include A Lot of Livin' to Do and Put on a Happy Face.
Performances are September 7, 8, 14 and 15 at 8 p.m., and a September 16 matinee beginning at 2 p.m.
Featuring Joshua Shockey, Suzie Stephensen, Brynna Darley, Ted Elroth, Deborah Beauchamp, Tracy McClung, Jeff Swanson, Ryan Pangracs, Liam Johnson, Gabrielle Smith, Dennis Truman, Isabelle Krasnesky, Kaitlyn Baker, David Beauchamp, Paul Hudalla, Tina Allen, Ashley Rielle, Kevin Albee, Ken Janasz, Lane Dickinson, Mackenzie Cross, Nicholas Rothmeyer, Alex Konczey, Elijah Beauchamp, Ben Schatzel, Ashley Zink, Zoe Hines, Rachel Rothmeyer, Toni Hudalla, Chase Nielson.

Legion Fetters Art Exhibition
Alcott Arts Center
Legion Fetters Art Exhibition: Aug 15: 6:30 pm Sat
Please join us as we feature another hometown Kansas City, Kansas Artist. This is Legions first solo Art Exhibit and as always we are working towards building confidence through exposure to peers. This young lady is incredibly talented and is a joy to visit with, so come and meet Legion and find out what drives her creativity.
My name is Legion Fetters and I'm a fourteen-year-old artist. I'm almost entirely self-taught, and have been drawing for roughly six years. As for what I draw, I love drawing monsters, humanoids and other freaks and creatures. For as long as I can remember, I've had a fascination with the supernatural and mythology, with most of my inspiration coming from ancient Greek and Egyptian myths (as well as the occasional cryptid or ghost story). Someday I want to become an artist and writer for fantasy comics, but for now I'm focusing on improving my work and getting exposure in the art world.

Some of the best storytellers in Kansas City tell their wildest stories about late nights and bad decisions. Plus, the improvisers of The KC Improv Company act out those stories, live, on the fly.
The show is inspired by Drunk History on Comedy Central, but it happens right in front of your face. And the history we share is the personal, sometimes embarrassing history of the featured performers.
Come see stand-up comedians, actors, improvisational actors, and other people who really know how to tell a story.
All on one stage.
Just $10, or $5 with a student ID.
Adult Fare – 17+ to enter, 21 to drink. As always, no drink minimums.
Produced by The KC Improv Company
The KC Improv Company has over 14 years of specializing in both long-form and short-form improvisational comedy. The group has called the Kick Comedy Theater home for over two years. With business partners Green Room Burgers and Beer and the Westport Coffeehouse, the KC Improv Company strives to create a total food, drink, and entertainment experience. Each week brings a different type of show, including "The Gauntlet," "Underground Throwdown," and "Live in Front of a Studio Audience."

THE GROWN-UP
By Jordan Harrison (September 24 – October 18,
2015)
Humana Festival Pick
Kai is a ten-year-old boy at his grandfather's
knee listening to a story of a magic doorknob.
Jump 15 years and he is a young television
writer weathering the humiliations of the
Hollywood rat race.
Jump in time again, and he and his future
husband watch the caterer streak through their
wedding reception. Has Kai run into powerful
magic or has he just realized the breakneck
speed of an ordinary life and what he might
have missed? A funny and honest tale about
living in the moment.
LITTLE NELLY'S NAUGHTY NOËL Little Nelly's
Naughty Noël
By Tim Siragusa; Songs by Jill Anderson
(November 27-December 20, 2015)
Back by popular demand!! Little Nelly's Naughty
Noël is a Blue Barn perversion of all we hold
dear, at that holliest, jolliest time of the
year! With a mad gang of varmints both bawdy
and bold, the play takes a wild, woolly romp
through Nebraskee of old in an evening that can
be described as "Willa Cather on crack" or "The
Gift of the Magi" laid out on a rack!
FROST/NIXON
By Peter Morgan (February 4-28, 2016)
Richard M. Nixon has just resigned the United
States presidency in total disgrace over
Vietnam and the Watergate scandal. British
talk-show host David Frost has become a lowbrow
laughing-stock. Determined to resurrect his
career, Frost risks everything on a series of
in-depth interviews in order to extract an
apology from Nixon. The cagey Nixon, however,
is equally bent on redeeming himself in his
nation's eyes. In the television age, image is
king, and both men are desperate to outtalk and
upstage each other as the cameras roll. The
result is the interview that sealed a
president's legacy.
THE CHRISTIANS
By Lucas Hnath (March 24-April 17, 2016)
Humana Festival Pick
Twenty years ago, Pastor Paul's church was
nothing more than a modest storefront. Now he
presides over a congregation of thousands, with
classrooms for Sunday School, a coffee shop in
the lobby, and a baptismal font as big as a
swimming pool. Today should be a day of
celebration. But Paul is about to preach a
sermon that will shake the foundations of his
church's belief. A big-little play about faith
in America—and the trouble with changing your
mind.
HEATHERS – THE MUSICAL
Music, Lyrics, and Book by Laurence O'Keefe and
Kevin Murphy (May 19-June 19, 2016)
The darkly delicious story of Veronica Sawyer,
the brainy and beautiful misfit who hustles her
way into the most powerful and ruthless clique
at Westerberg High: the Heathers. But before
she can get comfortable atop the high school
food chain, Veronica falls for the dangerously
sexy new kid, J.D., who plans to put the
Heathers in their place - six feet under.
OUT OF THE BLUE, a new Special Event series:
WALK THE NIGHT: The highly successful immersive
theatre event returns in October to explore the
world of one of an original Shakespearean ghost
tale. Location and more information to be
announced. October 21 – November 14
PORCHYARD READINGS: 4 staged readings of
contemporary plays that entice audiences to
embrace risk and celebrate discovery. New
works. New voices. New adventures.

THE GROWN-UP
By Jordan Harrison (September 24 – October 18,
2015)
Humana Festival Pick
Kai is a ten-year-old boy at his grandfather's
knee listening to a story of a magic doorknob.
Jump 15 years and he is a young television
writer weathering the humiliations of the
Hollywood rat race.
Jump in time again, and he and his future
husband watch the caterer streak through their
wedding reception. Has Kai run into powerful
magic or has he just realized the breakneck
speed of an ordinary life and what he might
have missed? A funny and honest tale about
living in the moment.
LITTLE NELLY'S NAUGHTY NOËL Little Nelly's
Naughty Noël
By Tim Siragusa; Songs by Jill Anderson
(November 27-December 20, 2015)
Back by popular demand!! Little Nelly's Naughty
Noël is a Blue Barn perversion of all we hold
dear, at that holliest, jolliest time of the
year! With a mad gang of varmints both bawdy
and bold, the play takes a wild, woolly romp
through Nebraskee of old in an evening that can
be described as "Willa Cather on crack" or "The
Gift of the Magi" laid out on a rack!
FROST/NIXON
By Peter Morgan (February 4-28, 2016)
Richard M. Nixon has just resigned the United
States presidency in total disgrace over
Vietnam and the Watergate scandal. British
talk-show host David Frost has become a lowbrow
laughing-stock. Determined to resurrect his
career, Frost risks everything on a series of
in-depth interviews in order to extract an
apology from Nixon. The cagey Nixon, however,
is equally bent on redeeming himself in his
nation's eyes. In the television age, image is
king, and both men are desperate to outtalk and
upstage each other as the cameras roll. The
result is the interview that sealed a
president's legacy.
THE CHRISTIANS
By Lucas Hnath (March 24-April 17, 2016)
Humana Festival Pick
Twenty years ago, Pastor Paul's church was
nothing more than a modest storefront. Now he
presides over a congregation of thousands, with
classrooms for Sunday School, a coffee shop in
the lobby, and a baptismal font as big as a
swimming pool. Today should be a day of
celebration. But Paul is about to preach a
sermon that will shake the foundations of his
church's belief. A big-little play about faith
in America—and the trouble with changing your
mind.
HEATHERS – THE MUSICAL
Music, Lyrics, and Book by Laurence O'Keefe and
Kevin Murphy (May 19-June 19, 2016)
The darkly delicious story of Veronica Sawyer,
the brainy and beautiful misfit who hustles her
way into the most powerful and ruthless clique
at Westerberg High: the Heathers. But before
she can get comfortable atop the high school
food chain, Veronica falls for the dangerously
sexy new kid, J.D., who plans to put the
Heathers in their place - six feet under.

SYNOPSIS: Bialystock and Bloom! Those names should strike terror and hysteria in anyone familiar with Mel Brooks' classic cult comedy film. Now as a big Broadway musical, THE PRODUCERS once again sets the standard for modern, outrageous, in-your-face humor. It is a truly "boffo" hit, winning a record twelve Tony Awards and wowing capacity crowds night after night. The plot is simple: a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history thereby bilking their backers (all "little old ladies") out of millions of dollars. Only one thing goes awry: the show is a smash hit! The antics of Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom as they maneuver their way fecklessly through finding a show (the gloriously offensive "Springtime For Hitler"), hiring a director, raising the money and finally going to prison for their misdeeds is a lesson in broad comic con
struction. At the core of the insanely funny adventure is a poignant emotional journey of two very different men who become friends.
CAST BREAKDOWN:
We are looking for a multi-racial, high-energy cast of performers.
Max Bialystock – male, bari-tenor, 40 to 60
A fearless showman is required with excellent singing, acting, movement and comedic skills.
He's described as selfish and greedy – a man who is only interested in making money. Max's fiery and sarcastic nature can be very intimidating; however, he is also charming and nearly irresistible. He knows how to get what he wants.
Leo Bloom – male, tenor, 27 to 36
Must be a strong song and dance man with excellent comedic skills.
Leo Bloom is a mousey, nervous and fearful accountant, prone to panic attacks and who keeps a security blanket to calm himself. However, he dreams of bigger things, especially in show biz. A follower that possesses hidden ambitions.
Ulla – female, belt, 20 to 40
A strong singer/actress with excellent comedic skills is required. A good belt essential.
Ulla introduces herself as a Swedish actress looking for a part in Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom's production Springtime for Hitler. She is a stereotypical Swedish woman: tall and beautiful with blonde hair. She's uninhibited and very industrious.
Franz Liebkind – male, baritone, 30 to 50
Strong comic singer/actor required. Must have good German accent.
Franz Liebkind (whose name in English means "Frank Lovechild") is a former Nazi who has penned an admiring musical tribute to Adolf Hitler, titled Springtime for Hitler. Max and Leo purchase and produce this "worst play ever written" as part of a plot to defraud investors by overselling and staging a sure-fire flop.
Roger de Bris – male, baritone, 40 to 60
Strong singer/actor with excellent comedic skills.
Roger Elizabeth De Bris is a gay theatre director, described by Max Bialystock as the worst director to have ever lived. He lives with his over-the-top flamboyant partner Carmen Ghia and his production crew in a gayer than gay Upper East Side town house in New York. He's chosen by Bialystock to direct Springtime for Hitler to ensure that it will flop.
Carmen Ghia – male, tenor, 25 to 40
Strong singer/actor with excellent comedic skills.
Carmen Ghia is Roger De Bris' "common-law assistant". They are both gay and they love to flounce around their Upper East Side town house. Carmen possesses lots of attitude, but is completely devoted to Roger and his career.
The Ensemble
Excellent singer/dancer/actors
The large ensemble will play a variety of roles, many of them with lines, including Roger's staff, Usherettes, Theatre patrons, Stormtroppers (who tap), old ladies with walkers and many more roles.
For more information, please contact Eric Magnus, Artistic Director of
The Barn Players, at emagnitude@me.com
The Barn Players embraces diversity in all aspects of our organization. Non-traditional and equal-opportunity casting is encouraged.

Bye, Bye Birdie - Second Weekend
You don't want to miss this show.
Comments from one person in attendance last weekend, " This production has heart, discipline, and talent.
This tech crew worked like a finely tuned machine."
