City in Motion Dance Theater presents "Circles, Cycles & Seasons"
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 1, 2015
CONTACT: Andrea Skowronek, Artistic Co-Director (816) 210-1192 cell or andreaskowronek@yahoo.com
City in Motion Dance Theater will present its professional company concert,
Circles, Cycles & Seasons, on Friday, May 1 and Saturday, May 2 at 8:00 PM and Sunday, May 3 at 2:00 PM at the H & R Block City Stage Theater at Union Station.
Circles, Cycles & Seasons features an eclectic mix of original dance pieces that connect to themes of the human experience: loss, rebirth, growth, community, confrontation and the circadian rhythms that bind us to the natural world.
The concert will feature new choreography by artistic co-directors Dale Fellin, Stephanie Whittler and Andrea Skowronek. Guest choreographers David Ollington and Elaine Kimble-Peaks will also present work. Company member Halley Willcox and Apprentice Company member Hannah Wilczewski will also premiere pieces.
Dale Fellin's piece, Since Then, premiered at A Modern Night at the Folly on February 28. Since Then, set to a lush cello score by Max Richter, features six dancers exploring themes of grief and loss. The piece is a memorial to Mr. Fellin's mother, Carol, who passed away in 2013. A contrasting piece will be a solo choreographed by Stephanie Whittler for company dancer Bobbi Foudree, who is expecting her second child in July. The piece explores physical and emotional growth and expansion. Andrea Skowronek's piece, Tribe, set to a percussion score by Glen Kotche, features four women moving as a collective unit. It is a piece about the beauty and connection found in everyday ritual.
Formula, by guest choreographer, David Ollington, is set to a rhythmic score by Gabriel Roth. Seven dancers glide across the stage in mesmerizing, recurring patterns that appear random but are cleverly orchestrated to fit together like pieces of a puzzle. Mr. Ollington is a professor of Dance at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas and danced with City in Motion Dance Theater from 1996 – 1999. Guest choreographer, Elaine Kimble-Peaks, will premier her group work Shifting Faults, set to music by Matthew Robert Cooper. Shifting Faults illuminates human nature's impulse to place blame rather than give praise and that sometimes you have no one to blame but yourself.

Your Bouffon mythology from Audrey:
Cursed with the mis-fortune of a grotesque appearance, and compulsion to push the limits of decency and morality, you are deemed less than human. You are beaten and driven from your home. Outside of the village, you band together with other bouffon creating your own bizarre community. Forever tormented by the rejection, you are obsessed with the society from which you were unjustly cast, and spend your time observing the villagers, their hypocrisy, and personal private vices.
Once a year, foolishly, the villagers invite you and your friends back to the village for a festival, so they can secretly mock and ridicule your physical imperfections. Seeing the perfect opportunity to enact your revenge, you all offer to bring a show. Reveling in the perverse attention and using wit, parody and charm the you and your tribe devise the most clever ways of slipping seeds of doubt, guilt and truth under the skin of the villagers, in hopes it will resurface later to destroy their precious society.
