Auditions for SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION coming to The Barn in late January!
AUDITIONS!
Six Degrees of Separation
By John Guare
Directed by David Martin
Assistant Direction & Film by Jeremy Riggs
Stage Management by DK Evenson
Assistant Stage Management by Sara Rose Cooper
Set Design by Richard J. Burt
Lighting Design by Phil Leonard
Costume Design by Julia Ras
Sound Design by Sean Leistico
Props Design by Valerie Martin
AUDITIONS:
January 31st & February 1st
from 1:00pm – 4:00pm
At St. Pius Church
55th and Woodson, Mission, KS
EXPECTATION and PREPARATION:
Auditions will be an open call both days, and will consist of cold readings from the script. Callbacks are by invitation only on Saturday, February 7th from 1:00pm – 5:00pm
NOTE ABOUT AUDITIONS AND THIS PRODUCTION...
Auditions are being held early due to the concept of the show, which should provide a unique opportunity to all who end up being involved in the production. Aspects of the show will be presented in various formats including the standard on stage scene, but it will also include voice over, film, and (if possible) live action feed from somewhere other than the stage at the Barn (though still on site in the theater). Because of the need to film certain segments of the show, we need to have a cast in place far in advance to give us time to get that taken care of. That also means the rehearsal schedule will be a little unique on this show. The total time commitment should be similar to a standard show, but it will be extended out over a longer period of time. For example, you may be needed for two days of filming in March and then not again until we start working on the on stage portions in late April or May, which will start later than normal since we will have far less to a
ccomplish in those rehearsals.
Please come to auditions with as close an idea as you can as to your availability from February through June. Once we start the final segment of rehearsals, it will be a fairly standard Sunday-Thursday, 7-10 pm schedule. Please also ensure you are truly available for this show before auditioning for it. Since some scenes will be filmed, should someone have to drop out after anything has been filmed, those scenes will need to be shot again, which wastes time and resources.
If you have any questions about the process for this show or expectations or to arrange an alternative audition time should those dates not work for you or anything at all, please contact David Martin at dmartin922@gmail.com.
PRODUCTION DATES:
May 29th – June 14, 2015
Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm
Sundays at 2:00pm
Industry Night is Monday, June 8th at 7:30pm
All performances take place at…
The Barn Players Theatre
6219 Martway in Mission, KS
SYNOPSIS:
Six Degrees of Separation explores the existential premise that everyone in the world is connected to everyone else in the world by a chain of no more than six acquaintances, thus, "six degrees of separation". The plot of the play was inspired by the real-life story of David Hampton, a con man who managed to convince a number of people in the 1980s that he was the son of actor Sidney Poitier. The play follows the trail of a young black con man, Paul, who insinuates himself into the lives of a wealthy New York couple, Ouisa and Flan Kittredge, claiming he knows their son at college. Paul tells them he is the son of actor Sidney Poitier, and that he has just been mugged and all his money is gone. Captivated by Paul's intelligence and his fascinating conversation (and the possibility of appearing in a new Sidney Poitier movie), the Kittredges invite him to stay overnight.
CAST BREAKDOWN:
LEAD ROLES
Paul
Very little is known about Paul's true identity. He claims to be the son of Sidney Poitier as well as a Harvard classmate of the Kittredges' children. His articulate and intelligent conversation belies his background. Must be instantly charming and may never have an off switch for his con game. (Male, African-American – 20's)
Louisa "Ouisa" Kittredge
Ouisa is a rich, attractive, middle-aged woman. She lives with her husband in a posh Upper East Side apartment in Manhattan. As the play opens, Ouisa is characterized by superficial traits: she is a good hostess, a quick conversationalist, and a dramatic storyteller. However, she also is the character most affected by the meeting with Paul. The experience leads to growth and her spiritual rebirth. (Female – 40's-50's)
Flanders "Flan" Kittredge
Flan is an attractive, middle-aged art dealer. His business is the discreet buying and selling of expensive works of art. Flan got into the art business out of a sincere love for art, but by the play's opening, he has lost this idealism. The passion he once felt for art has been supplanted by the great sums of money it can earn for him. (Male – 40's-50's)
SUPPORTING ROLES
Geoffrey
Geoffrey is a liberal South African billionaire. He is an acquaintance of the Kittredges and is at their home when Paul arrives. This role will require a South African dialect (which is basically British through a clenched jaw). (Male – 40's+)
Kitty
Kitty is Ouisa-light in terms of social status and is a controlling woman who is equal parts excited by her encounter with Paul and determined to get to the bottom of it. Married to Larkin. (Female – 40's-50's)
Larkin
Larkin is not sure anyone should be opening Pandora's box to find out what led Paul to them for fear of learning too much about his son. Fairly brow-beaten by being married to Kitty. (Male – 40's-50's)
Dr. Fine
Dr. Fine is probably angriest at what happened and likely has some more heavily developed racism than most of the others. (Male – 40's-50's)
Tess
Tess is the Kittredges' rebellious daughter. She tracks down Trent Conway and finds out about his relationship with Paul. (Female – 20's)
Woody
Woody is the younger child of Flan and Ouisa who doesn't say much, but probably has the best line in the entire show. Should be in reasonably good physical shape. (Male – 20's)
Ben
Ben is the classic college-aged kid who cannot stand to be around his parents. (Male – 20's)
Doug
Doug is a stoner but believes he is hiding that from everyone successfully, even though he isn't. (Male – 20's)
Trent Conway
Trent Conway attended the same high school as the Kittredge children. While attending MIT, he met Paul in Boston. The two young men had a three-month affair. (Male - 20's)
Elizabeth
Elizabeth moved to New York from Utah with her boyfriend Rick. They want to become actors. Should be young and starry-eyed but definitely grounded as well. (Female – 20's-30's)
Rick
Rick has moved to New York from Utah with his girlfriend Elizabeth. They want to become actors. As starry-eyed as Elizabeth but without the grounding force. (Male – 20's-30's)
CAMEO ROLES
Hustler
Paul picks up the hustler and takes him back to the Kittredge apartment for sex. We see him the day after. THIS CHARACTER WILL BE ON STAGE IN VERY LITTLE CLOTHING. (Male – 20's-30's)
Detective
Will likely exist only in voice over or on film for this production. (Male/Female – any age) The script also calls for a policeman character who will also only exist in voice over or on film. It is very likely this role will be filled from within the other actors in the show.

What happens when one actor doesn't know her lines? What if she doesn't even know the play? Or the person she's acting with? Script Tease is what happens. We'll pair one actor from a current Kansas City Production with an improviser from the KC Improv Company and see what story unfolds when one actor plays his role as rehearsed and the other goes totally off the rails.
Also featuring The KC Improv Company with their signature set "Hell's Doughnut!"
Just $8, or $5 with a student ID.
Adult Fare – 17+ to enter, 21 to drink. As always, no drink minimums.

SYNOPSIS: When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, Ren is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. What he isn't prepared for are the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, determined to exercise the control over the town's youth that he cannot command in his own home. When the reverend's rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren's reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid. The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him. To the rockin' rhythm of its Oscar and Tony-nominated top 40 score (the soundtrack album reached number one on the Billboard charts and has sold over 15 million copies!) and augmented with dynamic new songs for the stage musical, FOOTLOOSE celebrates
