Of Mice and Men
Few stories accurately portray the powerful
emotional impact of The Great Depression more than
the classic Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.
Journeyman Theatre Company is proud to be
producing this iconic piece of American literature
at the Just Off Broadway Theatre to provoke and
entice conversations centered around these richly
developed characters and the similarities of our
current "Great Recession" versus the hardened
lessons of history. Journeyman invites the
audience to come see the show opening June 12.
Two drifters, George (played by Lucas T. McVey)
and his friend Lennie (Kevin Bickwermert), with
delusions of living off the "fat of the land,"
have just arrived at a ranch to work for enough
money to buy their own place. Lennie is a man-
child, a little boy in the body of a dangerously
powerful man. It is Lennie's obsession with things
soft and cuddly that have made George cautious
about who the gentle giant, with his brute
strength, associates with. His promise to allow
Lennie to "tend to the rabbits" on their future
land keeps Lennie calm, amidst distractions, as
the overgrown child needs constant reassurance.
But when a ranch boss' promiscuous wife is found
dead in the barn with a broken neck, it's obvious
that Lennie, albeit accidentally, killed her.
George, now worried about his own safety, knows
exactly where Lennie has gone to hide, and he
meets him there. Realizing they can't run away
anymore, George is faced with a moral question:
how should he deal with Lennie before the ranchers
find him and take matters into their own hands.
The Founding Artistic Director of Journeyman
Theatre Company, Gregory Chafin, has taken the
reins as director for Of Mice and Men pulling
together a strong cast. Alongside McVey and
Bickwermert, Kenna Hall plays Curley's Wife as the
sole female character in the production.
Accompanying the cast is Curley (Mike Ducey),
Candy (Rick Holzman), Slim (Jon Engle),
Carlson/Boss (Michael Foster), Whit (John Van
Winkle) and Crooks ( )

Paseo's Announces Auditions for school next year 2014-2015
Auditions
for
Paseo Academy
of Fine & Performing Arts
2014-2015 Academic Year grades 7-12
May 26th at 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Paseo is located at
4747 Flora, Kansas City, MO 64110
It has been proven in many studies that students
who have a strong training in the arts do better
on standardized test than students who have no
arts education. The arts make not only the
students better, but the community as well.
All art forms have a place at Paseo Academy. It's
a place to improve your talents, show off your
talents and cultivate your talents that you might
not have known you had. The school, which becomes
like a family, integrates the arts throughout
college preparatory classes many other activities
that prepare you for life after high school.
Theater is the only art form that encompasses all
of the art forms such as creative writing, music,
dance, and visual arts. Theater students can
obtain analytical and oral language skills as well
as self confidence and discipline for careers in
the ever growing entertainment industry. The
skills learned in theater will also be helpful in
other careers outside of the entertainment
industry such as, public speaking, law, and
politics.
Dance is a visual art form that allows the body to
act as an instrument for expression. Dance Majors
have the chance to participate in the All Arts
holiday performance like Holiday on the Hill, and
take a trip to The Big Apple experience. To rap up
the year, the entire Dance Department will present
the All Arts Dance & Theater senior showcase.
VISUAL ARTS Through drawing, graphic design,
ceramics, painting and printmaking, the visual art
major develops a thorough understanding and range
of skills using two-dimensional media. Students
are led to employ a wide range of vocabulary in
visual art and polish skills, which readies them
for a post secondary program of study in visual
art.
Television Production/Broadcasting is a Career and
Technical Education program that operates out of
Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts. The
goal of the program is two-fold: first to
introduce all students in the Kansas City Public
schools to the television and broadcast journalism
industry, teach them how it works and present the
career opportunities. Second, the program will
prepare students to be college, career and work
ready in the television and broadcasting
journalism industry.
Technical theater at Paseo focuses on resume and
portfolio building through hands on real life
learning. Students will learn the basics in
technical theater production and design in the
classroom and by acting as interns for Paseo
Academy and assist in the technical productions
for all school events such as music, dance, and
poetry performances.
The Choral Music Conservatory students study Voice
Pedagogy of Performance, Concert Choir, Chamber
Choir, Theory 1 and 2, Piano 1 and 2 and
Individualized Lessons. We also offer a Middle
School component for 7th and 8th graders. Our
Choral Music Conservatory provides many
performance opportunities for students to formally
and creatively express themselves. Upon completion
of their choral studies students are worthy for
music scholarship, for the post secondary studies
or ready for entry into the professional arena.
Creative Writing students study poetry, fiction,
nonfiction and playwriting. In addition to
studying published works, students write critical
responses to literature. Writing of exceptional
merit is published in the Poets Voice, Paseo's
literary magazine. You might find students reading
at The Writers Place and the Blue Room.
Instrumental Music/Band students will have the
desire to perform music other have composed. They
either have developed skills and already play a
musical instrument or have a desire to learn. They
will have the discipline to be able to follow a
teacher's directions and the self-discipline to
practice.
Instrumental Music/Orchestra students will have
the desire to perform music other have composed.
They either have the skills and already play a
stringed instrument or have the desire to learn.
They will have the discipline to be able to follow
a teacher's directions and the self-discipline to
practice.
It has been proven in many studies that students
who have a strong training in the arts do better
on standardized test and are more likely to
succeed in post secondary education than students
who have no arts education. The arts make not only
the students better but the community as well.
Paseo Academy of the Fine and Performing Arts can
make it better.
Auditions are required of all students interested
in attending Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing
Arts. Audition details can be found on the school

THE ADDAMS FAMILY
February 27 – March 15
Music & Lyrics by Andrew Lippa RATED PG
Lyrics & Book by Marshall Brickman & Rick Elice Industry Night: March 9th
Based on the characters created by Charles Addams
THE ADDAMS FAMILY features an original story, and it's every father's nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family - a man her parents have never met. And if that weren't upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he's never done before - keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday's 'normal' boyfriend and his parents. Nominated for two Tony Awards during the 2011 – 2012 Broadway season.
SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION May 31 – June 14
By John Guare RATED R
Industry Night: June 8th
Inspired by a true story, the play follows the trail of a young black con man, Paul, who insinuates himself into the lives of a wealthy New York couple, Ouisa and Flan Kittredge, claiming he knows their son at college. Paul tells them he is the son of actor Sidney Poitier, and that he has just been mugged and all his money is gone. Captivated by Paul's intelligence and his fascinating conversation (and the possibility of appearing in a new Sidney Poitier movie), the Kittredges invite him to stay. Winner of the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play in 1991.
EQUUS July 31 – August 15
By Peter Shaffer RATED R
Industry Night: August 10th
Dr. Martin Dysart, a psychiatrist, is confronted with Alan Strang, a boy who has blinded six horses in a violent fit of passion. This very passion is as foreign to Dysart as the act itself. To the boy's parents it is a hideous mystery; Alan has always adored horses. To Dysart it is a psychological puzzle that leads both doctor and patient to a complex and disturbingly dramatic confrontation. This international success reached new acclaim in London and on Broadway when revived in 2008. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Play, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding New Foreign Play and the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best in 1975.
THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE September 18 – October 4
New Music by Jeanine Tesori RATED PG
New Lyrics by Dick Scanlan Industry Night: September 28th
Book by Dick Scanlan & Richard Henry Morris
Original Story and Screenplay by Richard Morris for the Universal Pictures Film
Additional songs by James Van Heusen & Sammy Cahn / Jay Thompson / Sir Arthur Sullivan and W. S. Gilbert / Victor Herbert & Rida Johnson Young / Walter Donaldson, Sam Lewis & Joe Young
THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE is a high-spirited, zany new 1920's musical that took Broadway by storm, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical in the 2001 – 2002 season. Taking place in New York City in 1922, THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE tells the story of young Millie Dillmount, who has just moved to the city in search of a new life for herself. It's a New York full of intrigue and jazz - a time when women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behavior were changing forever. Based on the popular 1967 movie.
THE PRODUCERS November 6 - 22
Music & Lyrics by Mel Brooks RATED R
Book by Thomas Meehan Industry Night: November 16th
Based on the 1968 Film
A down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history thereby bilking their backers (all "little old ladies") out of millions of dollars. Only one thing goes awry: the show is a smash hit! The antics of Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom as they maneuver their way fecklessly through finding a show (the gloriously offensive "Springtime For Hitler"), hiring a director, raising the money and finally going to prison for their misdeeds is a lesson in broad comic construction. At the core of the insanely funny adventure is a poignant emotional journey of two very different men who become friends. Winner of a record-breaking 12 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, during the 2000 – 2001 Broadway season.

A message from Nancy!
Hi, KC friends! Get ready for FEARLESS VOICE Kansas City! I will be doing a Masterclass in my hometown of KC on May 22, 2014! Here's a rundown of what we'll do in the three-hour session. First of all, I will let you in on my sure-fire-10-minute-all-inclusive WARM UP. As one of my first voice teachers used to say, "Don't leave your voice in the dressing room!" This warmup is short, sweet, and leaves you totally warmed up and ready in about 10 minutes. No lie. Once you have mastered it, it also helps you manage nerves, improve breath and support and hone intonation to tackle different genres. All from a 10-minute warmup? Yes, my little chickens. I will also impart audition wisdom, articulation tips for making the most of your sound, and a host of other little secrets I've learned from 30+ years in la show biz! And to think, it all started for me at Shawnee Mission East
, Shawnee Mission Park, and dinner theatre in KC! Then, I will work with each participant and address individual needs to give you a roadmap for improving your overall performance! (You can learn SO MUCH from watching fellow participants, btw.) We also laugh a lot and don't take it all too seriously... well, we work hard, but it's super fun. I am happy to work with ALL LEVELS of singer/performer. Shoot, I'm mostly an actor, but have to sing…so, join us! We'll be at The Barn Players Community Theatre on Thursday, May 22, from 2:00pm – 5:00pm. I have to limit the class to 15 participants, so contact me ASAP via message here, or at nancyopel@gmail.com, or take a look at my website nancyopel.com and contact me through there! It is $100 per participant, $25 for auditors (you can learn so much from watching this class for the price of a couple of lunches at Winstead's) so come sing with me and FEARLESS VOICE!
Nancy Opel grew up in the Kansas communities of Prairie Village and Leawood, and graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School. She was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical for her performance as "Penelope Pennywise" in Urinetown.
For more information: www.nancyopel.com & www.thebarnplayers.org
*Payments will be processed through Brown Paper Tickets. An additional convenience fee may apply.
Payment must be made online or at the door in advance of the Masterclass.

THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE February 27 – March 15
New Music by Jeanine Tesori RATED PG
New Lyrics by Dick Scanlan Industry Night: March 9th
Book by Dick Scanlan & Richard Henry Morris
Original Story and Screenplay by Richard Morris for the Universal Pictures Film
Additional songs by James Van Heusen & Sammy Cahn / Jay Thompson / Sir Arthur Sullivan and W. S. Gilbert / Victor Herbert & Rida Johnson Young / Walter Donaldson, Sam Lewis & Joe Young
A high-spirited, zany new 1920's musical that took Broadway by storm, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical in the 2001 – 2002 season. Taking place in New York City in 1922, the show tells the story of young Millie Dillmount, who has just moved to the city in search of a new life for herself. It's a New York full of intrigue and jazz - a time when women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behavior were changing forever. Based on the popular 1967 movie.
THE ADDAMS FAMILY September 18 – October 4
Music & Lyrics by Andrew Lippa RATED PG-13
Lyrics & Book by Marshall Brickman & Rick Elice Industry Night: September 28th
Based on the characters created by Charles Addams
The hilarious new musical features an original story, and it's every father's nightmare.

*Payments will be processed through Brown Paper Tickets. An additional convenience fee may apply.
Payment must be made online or at the door in advance of the Masterclass.

Celebrate National Tap Dance Day - Saturday, May 24, 7-9p
Saturday, May 24, 7-9p
Uptown Arts Bar, 3611 Broadway KCMO 64111
$5 Cover
Headline: National Tap Dance Day
This year, in coordination with City In Motion Dance Theater and Billie Mahoney, The Uptown Arts Bar, 3611 Broadway, will host National Tap Dance Day for the second year and celebrate the 136th birthday of tap dancing legend Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, on Saturday evening, May 24, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. All levels of tap dancers over the age of eighteen are invited to participate in a jam session led by Ms. Mahoney. Mike Ning will be on keyboard, and Victor Perelmuter on drums and musicians are invited to bring their instruments and join in the Jam Session. Jazz and Tap Dance enthusiasts are invited to join in the fun.
National Tap Dance Day falls on May 25 every year and is a celebration of tap dancing as an American art form. The idea of National Tap Dance Day was first presented to the United States Congress on February 7, 1989 and was signed into American law by President George H.W. Bush on November 8, 1989. celebrated in Kansas City at various venues since 1993, when, sponsored by the Elder Statesmen of Jazz, more than a hundred tap dancers participated in the Count Basie Room of the former Muehlebach Hotel. In 2001 the American Jazz Museum and Gem Theater were the venues, and Mahoney invited Carole Vaughn to come to KC, as well as Fayard Nicolas of the famed Nicolas Brothers, Cholly Atkins, the partner of Honi Coles in the dance act Coles and Atkins, Prince Spencer of the Promoted by Billie Mahoney, National Tap Dance Day has been our Step Brothers, and Norma Miller of the original Lindy Hoppers. Mahoney led a Panel Discussion about Bill Robinson, whom the participants had known and
worked with, and interesting anecdotes were shared. Also included was Chicago tapper, Tré Dumas III. All taught Master Classes and KC's own McFadden Brothers emceed the exciting performance that night at the Gem Theater.
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE
National Tap Dance Day was the brainchild of Carol Vaughn, Nicola Daval, and Linda Christensen in Washington, D.C. and they petitioned U.S. Congressional Representative John Conyers to introduce the bill. Congressman Conyers is well known as a patron of the arts, and is renowned for his love of jazz. As a federal legislator, he has successfully fought for greater recognition and funding for jazz, and in 1987, the United Sates Congress passed Conyers' House Concurrent Resolution 57 designating jazz a "national American treasure." On February 7, 1989 the Congressman won passage of a resolution commemorating tap dance, a form of dance closely associated with jazz, to declare May 25, the birth date of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, as the day to celebrate the Art of Tap Dance Nationwide. The date was deemed appropriate for this holiday because Bill Robinson was a significant contributor to tap dance.

ANNOUNCING…
THE BARN PLAYERS 2015 SEASON
Our 60th season of great plays and musicals!
THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE
February 27 – March 15
New Music by Jeanine Tesori RATED PG
New Lyrics by Dick Scanlan Industry Night: March 9th
Book by Dick Scanlan & Richard Henry Morris
Original Story and Screenplay by Richard Morris for the Universal Pictures Film
Additional songs by James Van Heusen & Sammy Cahn / Jay Thompson / Sir Arthur Sullivan and W. S. Gilbert / Victor Herbert & Rida Johnson Young / Walter Donaldson, Sam Lewis & Joe Young
AVENUE Q
April 17 – May 3
Music & Lyrics by Robert Lopez & Jeff Marx RATED R
Book by Jeff Whitty Industry Night: April 27th
Based on an original concept by Robert Lopez & Jeff Marx
Puppets Conceived & Designed by Rick Lyon / Animation Design by Robert Lopez
AVENUE Q is a hilarious modern musical focusing on a group of unique 20-somethings making their way in the big city, seeking their purpose in life. Although the show addresses humorous adult issues, it is similar to a beloved children's show; a place where puppets are friends, Monsters are good and life lessons are learned. Winner of the Tony "Triple Crown" for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book, AVENUE Q is part flesh, part felt, and packed with heart. AVENUE Q is a laugh-out-loud musical that tells the timeless story of a recent college grad named Princeton who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. He soon discovers that although the residents seem nice, it's clear that this is not your ordinary neighborhood. Together, Princeton and his new-found friends struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life.
SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION
May 31 – June 14
By John Guare RATED R
13 males / 4 females Industry Night: June 8th
EQUUS
July 31 – August 15
THE ADDAMS FAMILY
September 18 – October 4
Music & Lyrics by Andrew Lippa RATED PG-13
Lyrics & Book by Marshall Brickman & Rick Elice Industry Night: September 28th
Based on the characters created by Charles Addams
THE PRODUCERS
November 6 - 22
