SYNOPSIS:
Blood Brothers, by the author of the plays Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine, is a haunting rags to riches tragedy of our times. A woman with numerous children to support surrenders one of her new born twins to the childless woman for whom she cleans house. The boys grow up streets apart, never learning the truth. They become firm friends and fall in love with the same girl. One prospers while the other falls on hard times. A narrator warns that a price has to be paid for separating twins. Show Starts Tonight! "Imaginary Moments" by Zachary Weaver

Alcott Arts Center*

"Imaginary Moments" by Zachary Weaver: Sep 28-30: 7:30 pm Fri-Sat; 2:30 pm Sun
Trap Door Theatre presents a quirky collection of experimental plays by national award-winning, local playwright, Zachary Weaver, as a benefit for the Alcott Arts Center.

Spinning from fantastic moments in the real world to mundane moments in a number of fantasy worlds, Imaginary Moments is a satisfying roller coaster of offbeat humor that teases the imagination with unconventional theatricality and unique themes.
Try to come out to see what incredible talent awaits you for these one act plays. They are short and very entertaining. The length of the show is just at one hour, but you will want to take time to visit the art galleries where we have Ada Shakir-Muhmud and May Evans exhibiting this month.

"NEXT TO NORMAL is a brave, breathtaking
musical...It is something much more than a feel-
good musical. It is a feel-everything musical."—
The New York Times

KANSAS CITY THEATRE PREMIERE

Winner: Three 2009 Tony Awards® and 2010 Pulitzer
Prize! Meet Diana–sexy, sharp and desperately
trying to hold on to her family, including husband
Dan–handsome, genuine and hard-working, struggling
to juggle being a father and a husband. Welcome to
the world of NEXT TO NORMAL, the brilliant,
evocative winner of the 2010 Pulitzer Prize that
takes us inside the lives of a typical American
family that's anything but typical. Contains
Strong Language and Themes.

Next To Normal CAST

Daniel Beeman is a Nebraska-born 19 year-old who
just loves to be on stage. He has been performing
through several outlets such as ballet, jazz, tap,
musical theatre, show choir, and other choral
programs for over 10 years. He is also an
accomplished competitive Irish dancer, having
recently competed at the World Championships in
Ireland. He has had the privilege to perform solo
and with professional acts on stages in Belfast,
Omaha, Branson, Nashville, Chicago, Kansas City,
and Orlando. Musical theatre credits include Timon
in The Lion King, Linus in The Music Man, Link
Larkin in scenes from Hairspray, and starring as
Alex in his high school's originial musical
production, Turning Green. Daniel is also the Duke
of the Show Me Pride Youth Royalty Court and has
been performing in the weekly "MJ Knight's Dinner
is a Drag Show" at Hamburger Mary's Kansas City.
He plans to continue performing and thanks his
family and friends for theirundying support
through everything he does!

Graham Fairleigh is making his She&Her debut. Some
of Graham's favorite roles on the KC stage
include; Barrett in Titanic, Cinderella's Prince
in Into The Woods, Man 2 in Songs for a New World,
The Boss in Side Show and Cladwell in Urinetown.
Graham has also performed as a Cabaret artist and
a concert soloist in various venues around the
Kansas City area.

Robert Hingula is ecstatic to be a part of Next to
Normal and his first show with She & Her
Productions. Robert has appeared in numerous other
performances in the KC-Metro area including Tommy
(Tommy), [title of show](Hunter), The Wedding
Singer (Robbie Hart), Rent (Roger), Aida (Zoser),
Grease (Kenickie), Oklahoma!(Curley), and
Footloose (Chuck Cranston). This summer Robert
will be appearing in Sweeney Todd (Sweeney) and
You're a Good Man Charlie Brown! (Snoopy) at
Shawnee Mission Theatre in the Park. When not on
stage, Robert spends his days practicing
employment law at Polsinelli Shughart PC. He
attributes all his success to his super-hot wife,
Melissa (whose continued support allows him to
come out and play) and his beautiful daughter,
Darcie (whose own talent and awesomeness inspires
him – and keeps him laughing – daily).

Matthew King is very excited to work with 'She &
Her Productions' and to be apart of the Kansas
City premiere of 'Next to Normal'. Although he is
from Kansas City, he has most recently stepped
onto the theatre scene after returning from the
Roosevelt Conservatory for Musical Theatre and
hopes to continue strive within this wonderful
market even further. His most recent projects in
the city have been Collins in 'Rent' at the Barn
Players, Horton in 'Seussical' at Theatre in the
Park and the Coterie Theatre's 'Once Upon a
Mattress'. He is excited to to share the story of
such a brave musical to Kansas City community!

Kristin Leathers is the Owner/Chef of Alter Ego
Catering and Cakes (www.alteregofood.com/), has
her Doctorate and Masters in Clinical Psychology,
has her Bachelors in Radio/TV/Film, and oh, right,
is a Singer/Actor around KC. One might say her
career has been a bit Bipolar thus prepping her
for Diana (a role that jumped to the top of her
dream list the second she heard the cast album).
Kristin has been seen on stage around town at MET,
The Chestnut, OCTA, The Barn Players, Theatre in
the Park, MTH, and The White Theatre. Favorite
roles include: Woman 2 (SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD),
Trix (THE DROWSY CHAPERONE), Rhoda (A NEW BRAIN),
Dorothy Brock (42ND STREET), Daisy Hilton (SIDE
SHOW), and Gabby/Bobbi (CITY OF ANGELS). Having
started the year with ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S
NEST at MET and ending it with NEXT TO NORMAL, it
would seem Kristin is spending 2012 finding some
unexpected synchronicity between her stage work
and her psych doctorate. Which is cool. And doing
this role with Graham as her doctor is about as
perfect as anything could be. Her husband
(Maneesh) and her children (Holden and Tierney)
are a remarkable gift in her life, and she
dedicates her performance as Diana to them more
than any other performance she has ever done.
Hugs, therapy, meds, Bipolar cycling, and
stability to all three of you: I love you all even
more than this part. : )

Deanna Mazdra is thrilled to be a part of Next to
Normal as her first show with She and Her! She
graduated from the University of Central Missouri
where she played such roles as Little Red in Into
the Woods, Connie in A Chorus Line, Milady inThe
Three Musketeers and various roles with the
Central Missouri Repertory company. She was last
seen inReckless as Rachel with Relevance
Productions. Deanna also works as a peer educator
with the Coterie Theatre in their Dramatic Aids
Education project. She is so excited for this show
and for the chance to work with such wonderful
people!

Byrd Productions and Happy Faces Entertainment are thrilled to present: The: To Skit or Not to Skit - So, What's Behind That Wall?

Byrd Productions and Happy Faces Entertainment are thrilled to
present:
The: To Skit or Not to Skit - So, What's Behind That Wall?
- Workshop by Julie Varholdt

To Skit or Not to Skit? That is the Question
Trying to find a funny skit for a show or competition and all your
books are 15 to 50 years old and nothing is funny? What was funny
back in 1960 may not be funny anymore and it may not be
"politically correct‟ either. This class will show you how to rework
it, reword it, and make it your own.
AND
What's Really Behind The Wall?
A hands on class that teaches you what's really behind that crazy
accordion wall that hides the elevator, escalator, and the stairs. You
will learn the techniques needed to go up and down the elevator,
go forwards and backwards on the escalator, go up and down the
stairs, and more! It's a total riot and one of the most fun times
you'll have learning.

Wednesday, October 17th
7:00 - 10:00
at the Just Off Broadway Theater
$30 for ages 16 and older

To reserve your spot

A Larval Mask Workshop
By Heidi Van
Sunday, September 30, 1-4pm
at The Just Off Broadway Theater

$30
call 816-305-8188 to reserve

In the world of larval masks everything is at the edge of beginning.
Building on neutrality of presence the actor begins to navigate space and
physicality in exercises and improvisations that:
- simplify and amplify gestures,
- explore the mask as a moving structure in the space, with forms,
trajectories, dynamic oppositions and to find the body who can reveal it,
- explore the animalistic and fantastic dimension of the mask.

Heidi Van, Actor/Creator
Co-Founder/Curator of Fishtank Performance Studio, Producing Artistic
Director of HYBRID: a theatre collective,
dubbed The Queen of Dead Art Forms by Alan Schuerstel is best known
for performing and creating pieces in the red nose clown style. Van is a
2010 recipient of the MASTERMIND AWARD, a Charlotte Street
Outstanding Generative Performing Artist Finalist and an KC Arts Fund
Inspiration Grant recipient. Van's most widely produced original clown
play is The Coppelia Project: a clown ballet in three acts that debuted at

KC Stage has added another link to their social networking - and it's Delicious!

There are a lot of resources out there for the performing arts, from places to buy scripts to sites with help on marketing and volunteer management. But unless you are an expert at Google-fu, sometimes it's hard to find what you're looking for.

So, in KC Stage's continuing mission to be the most comprehensive resource for the performing arts, we have compiled a library of over 600 (and growing) links that are helpful resources for people interested in the performing arts.

This library is connected to the social bookmarking site Delicious (http://delicious.com/kcstage), which utilizes an easy-to-use tagging system so you can find the links you need. You can search for just one tag ("books") or filter by multiple tags (i.e., "books" and "theatre" for sites that are about books on theatre). If you are a user of Delicious, you can be added to our Network (details on that can be found on the Delicious website) and have us be added to yours.

Just go to http://delicious.com/kcstage for the link library. You can also get to these links by clicking "Other Links" on the KC Stage website.

Don't see a link you think should be added to our site? That's what's fun about Delicious - it's the ultimate work in progress. Just send an e-mail to magazine@kcstage.com (with the subject line of 'add my link to Delicious') and we'll investigate adding the link.

Starlight Children's Theatre

STARLIGHT CHILDREN'S THEATRE ANNOUNCES TWO MUSICALS IN ITS 2013 SEASON AT THE KAUFFMAN CENTER
The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley and Peter Cottontail III continue joint partnership for children

Starlight's Children's Theatre is excited to announce its 2013 season at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts: The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley will be presented January 16-20; Peter Cottontail III will be presented March 27-31.

"These are two great shows for children and their families," said Denton Yockey, Starlight president and executive producer. "Flat Stanley is a beloved children's book series that has become a cultural phenomenon with children, parents and especially teachers who use the book to promote international literacy and community building – there's even a Flat Stanley mobile app. The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley is just as charming and fun as the book series," Yockey said. "Peter Cottontail III with its fun story, charming lyrics and upbeat tunes is the perfect springtime celebration and a clever twist on the Easter Bunny story."

Starlight Children's Theatre is a partnership between the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts and Starlight Theatre with the goal of creating fully produced children's theatre productions for Kansas City. The partnership also allows for qualified schools to receive bus money to attend the school matinees through Kauffman Center's Open Doors Transportation Fund.

"We launched Starlight Children's Theatre last year in order to provide more opportunities for young audiences in Kansas City to experience the performing arts and specifically professional musical productions that are the quality of Starlight's Broadway productions," said Jane Chu, president and chief executive officer of the Kauffman Center. "The response from schools and the general community has been very positive. We expect our second season to be just as popular."

STARLIGHT CHILDREN'S THEATRE 2013 SEASON:
THE MUSICAL ADVENTURES OF FLAT STANLEY
January 18 to 20 Weekend Public Performances
January 16 to 18 Weekday School Matinees
Appropriate for ages 4 and older
Based on the book Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown. Book by Timothy Allen McDonald; Lyrics by Timothy Allen McDonald and Jonathan K. Waller; Music by Jonathon K. Waller, David Weinstein, Timothy Allen McDonald and Stephen Gabriel.

The beloved children's book, Flat Stanley, has become a literary and pop cultural phenomenon around the world and now the story comes to the stage in this delightful musical. Stanley Lambchop is your normal, everyday, run-of-the-mill kid. But one night while he's sleeping, the bulletin board on the wall above his bed comes loose and falls – right on top of Stanley! And the next morning, Stanley Lambchop wakes up flat. In a whirlwind musical travelogue, Stanley - the ultimate exchange student - scours the globe for a solution to his unusual problem. He's stamped, posted and cancelled from Hollywood to France to Honolulu and beyond. And whether he's thwarting a robbery at the Louvre Museum in Paris, or 'hanging ten' off the coast of Hawaii, Stanley is closing in on his goal of being a three-dimensional boy once more.

PETER COTTONTAIL III
March 29 to 31 Weekend Public Performances
March 27 to 29 Weekday School Matinees
Appropriate for all ages
Book by Frances Seidensticker; Music and Lyrics by Linda M. Lee

The musical's namesake character, Peter Cottontail III, is training to become the next Easter Bunny since his grandfather is retiring. Peter has many challenges to overcome, but learns to rely on his friends and family for encouragement and help. The young bunny manages to escape from a trap set by hunters and foil a plot by opportunistic men to take over his friends' farmhouse. These adventures help him realize that he is mature enough to be the Easter Bunny after all. Audiences will be humming along to catchy songs like "Here Comes Peter Cottontail" and "The Secret of Springtime."

To reserve your spot
call 816-305-8188

Both workshops will be taught in one evening by visiting artist:
Julie Varholdt,
also known as Lovely Buttons, Miss Beulah Pearl, Woo~man and
many more zany characters, has been clowning now for over 20
years in sunny Arizona. Sharing the art of Clowning is a passion of

the World Clown Association 2010 Clown of the Year, and first

The: To Skit or Not to Skit - So, What's Behind That Wall? - Workshop

Byrd Productions and Happy Faces Entertainment are thrilled to present:
The: To Skit or Not to Skit - So, What's Behind That Wall? - Workshop by Julie Varholdt

To Skit or Not to Skit? That is the Question
Trying to find a funny skit for a show or competition and all your books are 15 to 50 years old and nothing is funny? What was funny back in 1960 may not be funny anymore and it may not be "politically correct‟ either. This class will show you how to rework it, reword it, and make it your own.

AND

What's Really Behind The Wall?
A hands on class that teaches you what's really behind that crazy accordion wall that hides the elevator, escalator, and the stairs. You will learn the techniques needed to go up and down the elevator, go forwards and backwards on the escalator, go up and down the stairs, and more! It's a total riot and one of the most fun times you'll have learning.

$30 for ages 16 and older
at The Just Off Broadway Theater
3051 Central, KCMO 64108

Byrd Productions presents: A Larval Mask Workshop~By Heidi Van

Byrd Productions presents:
A Larval Mask Workshop
By Heidi Van
Sunday, September 30, 1-4pm
at The Just Off Broadway Theater

$30
call 816-305-8188 to reserve

In the world of larval masks everything is at the edge of beginning.
Building on neutrality of presence the actor begins to navigate space and
physicality in exercises and improvisations that:
- simplify and amplify gestures,
- explore the mask as a moving structure in the space, with forms,
trajectories, dynamic oppositions and to find the body who can reveal it,
- explore the animalistic and fantastic dimension of the mask.

KC Stage looking for contributors

KC Stage Magazine (www.kcstage.com) is an all-volunteer run magazine about the performing arts in and around the Kansas City metro area. We cover theatre, dance, music, and independent film, both on and off the stage.

We're looking for contributors: writers for articles (arts news, spotlights, and basic stagecraft how-to/educational articles), photographers for accompanying artwork (both cover photos and internal), and reviewers to add to our small list of official KC Stage reviewers (reviewers have to qualify to be added).

Our contributor guidelines, which should answer most questions, can be found at www.kcstage.com/contributors. We don't pay, but print contributors get a free 1/8th page ad for each published item, as well as a copy of the magazine your article or photo is in. Contribute enough, and you could earn yourself a free subscription. We also have occasionally given out extra tickets to various productions to our prominent contributors.

We here at KC Stage know you are all busy people: as busy people ourselves, we appreciate what time donation you can provide to KC Stage. Articles only take an hour or two (depending on the depth) a month; and any help you could provide would be appreciated.

If you, or anyone you know would be interested in contributing an hour or two to write an article for KC Stage, please e-mail me off list at afiedler@kcstage.com. Thanks!

November 2-18
Directed by Tiffany Garrison-Schweigert

"NEXT TO NORMAL is a brave, breathtaking
musical...It is something much more than a feel-
good musical. It is a feel-everything musical."—
The New York Times
KANSAS CITY THEATRE PREMIERE
Winner: Three 2009 Tony Awards® and 2010 Pulitzer
Prize! Meet Diana–sexy, sharp and desperately
trying to hold on to her family, including husband
Dan–handsome, genuine and hard-working, struggling
to juggle being a father and a husband. Welcome to
the world of NEXT TO NORMAL, the brilliant,
evocative winner of the 2010 Pulitzer Prize
that takes us inside the lives of a typical
American family that's anything but typical.

ORDINARY DAYS by Adam Gwon
March 15-31
Directed by Tiffany Garrison-Schweigert

From one of musical theatre's most exciting new
composers comes ORDINARY DAYS, a refreshingly
honest and funny musical about making real
connections in the city that never sleeps (but
probably should at some point.) ORDINARY DAYS
tells the story of four young New Yorkers
whose lives intersect as they search for
fulfillment, happiness, love and cabs. Through a
score of vibrant and memorable songs, their
experiences ring startlingly true to life.
ORDINARY DAYS is an original musical for anyone
who's ever struggled to appreciate the
simple things in a complex place. With equal doses
of humor and poignancy, it celebrates how 8.3
million individual stories combine in unexpected
ways to make New York City such a unique and
extraordinary home.
A KANSAS CITY THEATRE PREMIERE

A Feminine Ending by Sarah Treem
May 10-18
Directed by Taylor St. John

Amanda, twenty-five, wants to be a great composer.
But at the moment, she's living in New York City
and writing advertising jingles to pay the rent
while her fiancé, Jack, pursues his singing
career. So when Amanda's mother, Kim, calls one
evening from New Hampshire and asks for her help
with something she can't discuss over the phone,
Amanda is only too happy to leave New York. Once
home, Kim reveals that she's leaving Amanda's
father and needs help packing. Amanda balks and
ends up (gently) hitting the postman, who happens
to be her first boyfriend. They spend the night
together in an apple orchard, where Amanda tries
to tell Billy how her life got sidetracked. It has
something to do with being a young woman in a
profession that only recognizes famous men. Billy
acts like he might have the answer, but
doesn't. Neither does Amanda's mother. Or, for
that matter, her father. A Feminine Ending is a
gentle, bittersweet comedy about a girl who
knows what she wants but not quite how to get it.
Her parents are getting divorced, her fiancée is
almost famous, her first love reappears, and
there's a lot of noise in her head but none of it
is music. Until the end.

Subject: MATC Dramatists Lab Call for Directors, Actors, and Dramaturgs

The 34th Annual
Mid-America Theatre Conference (MATC) - Playwriting Symposium
Hyatt Regency Hotel
St. Louis, MO.
March 7-10, 2013

Mid-America Dramatists Lab
CALL FOR DIRECTORS, ACTORS AND DRAMATURGS
The Playwriting Symposium of the Mid-America Theatre Conference seeks directors, actors, and dramaturgs to participate in our Mid-America Dramatists Lab, which produces a series of staged readings of new ten-minute plays during the Playwriting Symposium breakout sessions.

The conference-wide theme is "Myth." Home to the famous Gateway Arch —the "Gateway to the West" and a monument of westward expansion — St. Louis proclaims itself to be a site of many myths about the United States of America: its dreams, promises, potential, ambitions, identity, destiny, abuses, manipulations, hubris...and the list goes on. The ways that myths are created, used, manipulated, exposed, recycled, and remade is a central exploration of any critical analysis of a place, a people, a culture, or a cultural practice. The role of myth in theatre practice, scholarship, and education is as varied as the myths of creation and origin that our religions, cultures, and nations depend upon. A myth is a cultural marker, a beacon of historical memory, while at the same time it is an invention used to propagate an ideology.

For our 2013 St. Louis meeting, the Mid-America Theatre Conference invites proposals of presentations, conversations, scripts, and workshops around the theme of "Myth" as it plays a role in our own work—both in the United States and abroad. How do theatres and practitioners depend upon or create useful myths? How do historians address them? What are our myths and how are we aware of them (or not aware of them)? How do we try to consciously or unconsciously deny, propagate, or provoke them in our work? How might a work's reception be shaped by existing myths? What kind
of iconoclastic moves might destroy old myths or create new myths?

This is a juried event and the call for Directors, Actors, and Dramaturgs is directed primarily at academic theatre artists who are faculty members or graduate students and/or professionals in the field who seek to participate in New Play Development alongside their peers. The plays will be rehearsed and performed as staged readings at the conference. Each ten minute play receives approximately two hours of rehearsal time at the conference.  All participants assigned to a given project will have the final script in hand prior to the conference.

All theatre artists who are selected to participate in this event must register for the conference. There is no funding from the conference for travel or lodging costs. The Mid-America Theatre Conference will take place March 7-10, 2013 at the Hyatt Regency in St. Louis, MO. All theatre artists are strongly encouraged (though not required) to be present for orientation Thursday afternoon, March 7.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
(Interested individuals may submit in more than one category.)
ACTORS: Please submit a headshot (jpg), resume, and a brief letter describing the types of roles you usually play and if you have any experience working with new plays or being involved in staged readings of plays. Approximately two roles are assigned to each actor.

DIRECTORS: Please submit a resume or CV detailing directing experience and a one page (or less) letter describing your experience and approach to directing and developing new work.  Once assigned a play or plays to direct, the directors may contact the playwright and dramaturg prior to the conference for any advance needs for the individual project.

DRAMATURGS: Please submit a resume or CV and a one page (or less) letter describing your dramaturgy experience both with new work and in other capacities. Describe the kinds of projects you might find interesting to explore at this conference.

Submit by e-mail only (MS Word File in ".doc" or ".docx" please; or as a PDF) to all three of the following email addresses:  Ron Zank, Co-Chair – ronald.zank@lamar.edu and Shawna Mefferd Carroll, Co-Chair –The  smeff001@plattsburgh.edu and Sarah Crockarell, Graduate Student Liaison sarah.crockarell@colorado.edu.

ALL SUBMISSIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BY OCTOBER 15TH, 2012.  Acceptance will be acknowledged early January 2013 or earlier.  Direct all questions to: Ron Zank, Co-Chair – ronald.zank@lamar.edu, (409) 880-8154.
