Starlight's Blue Star Award Winners

High School Musical Theatre Students Recognized at Starlight's Tenth Annual Blue Star Awards

Musical theatre students and instructors from area high schools gathered at Starlight Theatre last week for the Tenth Annual Blue Star Awards. The ceremony included productions by six of the nominated high schools with presentations by local celebrity presenters and a Brian d'Arcy James, a twice Tony®-nominated Broadway actor who also appears on NBC's television series SMASH.

Modeled after Broadway's Tony® Awards, the Blue Star Awards recognize achievement and excellence in high school musical theatre and is one of the largest of its kind in the nation. The program, sponsored by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Kansas City, annually serves close to 5,000 area students who contribute either on the stage or behind the scenes to their schools' musical theatre productions. This year, 46 area high schools producing 48 musicals participated for a total of 120 nominees.

"In our tenth anniversary, Starlight can proudly say that many thousands of young lives have been touched, often times changed, by this program," said Denton Yockey, Starlight Theatre president and executive producer. "Young men and women that have gone on to achieve promising careers in many walks of life - including the theatre, education, even achieving dreams of performing on Broadway."

Highlights of the Awards Ceremony included the presentation of the Outstanding Actor and Actress in a Lead Role: Tyler Eisenreich from Blue Springs High School won for his role as Jimmy Smith in Thoroughly Modern Millie; Brooke Myers from Lee's Summit High School won for her role as Miss Adelaide in Guys and Dolls. Eisenreich and Myers will go on to compete on a national level at the National High School Musical Theater Awards in New York City in June.

Alex Peterson of Blue Valley High School and Savannah Bell of Shawnee Mission Northwest High School each received Rising Scholarship Awards. The $2,500 college scholarships are presented to one male and one female high school senior who have contributed the most to his or her high school theatre department and demonstrated exceptional theatrical achievement. The award for Outstanding Overall Production was presented to Blue Valley High School for Crazy For You.

"What is very apparent is the sense of community and the way these students are supported in the community by the Blue Star Awards," James said. "And it really is a good combination of the individuals who are pursuing their dreams and the community that supports them."

A panel of 18 judges attended the musical productions of each participating school during the fall 2011 and spring 2012 semesters. These judges provided performance and production critiques to Starlight's Education Department. Additionally, their comments were compiled and shared with each school's theatre teacher and students.

Suppliants is on of the oldest surviving Greek tragedy It was probably first performed sometime after 470 BC as the first play in a trilogy, sometimes referred to as the Danaid Tetralogy. The second play of which, the Aegyptioi dealt with the sons of Egyptus winning the hands of the Danaids, and the culminating play, the Danaids, dealt with the plot of the Danaids to kill their husbands on the wedding night. But all we have is this play. The Suppliants~ The Danaids form the chorus and serve as the protagonists. They flee a forced marriage to their Egyptian cousins. When the Danaides reach Argos, they entreat King Pelasgus to protect them. He refuses pending the decision of the Argive people, who ...decide in the favor of the Danaids. Danaus rejoices the outcome, and the Danaids praise the Greek gods. Almost immediately, a herald of the Egyptians comes to attempt to force the Danaids to return to their cousins for marriage. Pelasgus arrives, threatens the herald, and urges t!
he Danaids to remain within the walls of Argos. The play ends with the Danaids retreating into the Argive walls, protected.
The play this year will be Directed by Daivd Brisco Luby with original live music by Beau Bledsoe and musicians Pat Conway and Brad Cox. Choreography of the Chorus will be by Latra Wilson. Alice Morton is the Costumes Designer and Richard Van Cleve will be the Scenic and Mask Designer. Children’s Dance Theater/Apprentice Company performance

For Immediate Release: May 20, 2012

Contact: Andrea Skowronek, 816-210-1192
Director, City in Motion Children's Dance Theater

City in Motion Dance Theater, Inc. announces its Children's Dance Theater/Apprentice Company performance, to be presented on Sunday, June 3, 2012 at 2:00 PM at the St. Teresa's Academy Auditorium, Music & Arts Building, 5600 Main Street, Kansas City, Missouri, 64113.

The concert will feature two premieres by Ann Shaughnessy. The first piece, for the eleven members of the Apprentice Company, is entitled See, Sync, Sort. The music, by Radiohead, is performed by Section. The dance is a short but thorough exploration of musicality, timing and pattern, ending in a very orderly way! The second piece, for the eight members of the Children's Dance Theater, is called Round and Straight. The music is by Augustus Pablo, King Tubby, and Stanley Black. Like polka dots and stripes, like cone-shaped party hats, this playful dance demonstrates the moods of things round and straight.

Tracie Davis will present Go to Bed! with music by Patients and She & Him for the Children's Dance Theater. Go to Bed! Is a dance suite about the trials of older sisters putting little sisters to bed and how sometimes only a big sister can comfort a little one back to sleep.

Andrea Skowronek will present 6 + 6 = 11 with music by Radiohead for the Apprentice Company. This piece was originally performed by the City in Motion Dance Theater professional company in 2004.

City in Motion School of Dance faculty members Lillian Francis (Jazz III), Stephanie Whittler (Ballet II), and Amanda January (Ballet IV), will have choreography presented in the concert. Selected student choreography by Leah Brownlee, Marina Vianello, Greer Madole and Lilly McGonigle will also be featured.

Tickets for the concert are $8 for adults and $6 for students and seniors and are available at the door. St. Teresa's Academy is located at 5600 Main Street, Kansas City, MO 64113. The auditorium is located in the Music & Arts Building on the west side of the campus. Please enter in the main doors facing the quadrangle. There is ample parking in the lots on campus.

The Children's Dance Theater provides an opportunity for students at the City in Motion School of Dance to work on pieces of artistic merit under the direction of professional choreographers. The Children's Dance Theater is currently made up of 19 members between the ages of 8 – 17 who pursue training in modern, ballet, jazz and improvisation. The Children's Dance Theater is under the direction of Andrea Skowronek, artistic co-director of City in Motion Dance Theater.

City in Motion Dance Theater was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 1985. City in Motion is a school of dance, a professional dance company, and a presenter of dance. Its mission is to foster the development of high quality contemporary dance programming and expand the dance audience in the Kansas City area.

Funding for the Children's Dance Theater and the City in Motion Scholarship Program has been provided by: Francis Families Foundation, the ArtsKC Fund, the Linda and Skip Nottberg Fund, the Deborah Mann Charitable Foundation, and Moosewerks.

Once Upon A Mattress Press Release

THE COTERIE MAKES COMIC FAIRY TALE MAGIC WITH
ONCE UPON A MATTRESS JUNE 19-AGUST 5
You'll never look at fairy tales the same way again!

Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairytale, "The Princess and the Pea," comes to the stage as a musical comedy in Once Upon a Mattress June 19 – August 5 at the Coterie Theatre in Crown Center.
The Coterie is working with the esteemed Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization to create this new theatre-for-young-audiences audiences version of Once Upon a Mattress from the Broadway original by Mary Rogers (music), Marshal Barer (book and lyrics) and Jay Thompson and Dean Fuller (book).

"For some time, I've wanted to bring this piece to Coterie audiences," said Jeff Church, Coterie artistic producing director. "Grandparents and some parents will remember this is the delightfully comic musical that made Carol Burnett famous by telling the story of the 'The Princess and the Pea' - only this princess is from the swamp!

"This atypical view of the traditional princess is just what we like to do," Church said. "Mary Rodgers, daughter of Richard Rodgers, is the composer of the hilarious songs, including the famous, robust number called "Shy." We expect Mary to join representatives from the Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization who are coming here to experience this Coterie world premiere."

Once Upon A Mattress is part of the Coterie's Lab for New Family Musicals, a program developed to improve the quality of productions available for families and young audiences. "Inviting the original Broadway artists to work on their shows in Kansas City has been very rewarding for the talented artists associated with our theatre," Church said. Previous Broadway artists involved in the program include Henry Krieger (Lucy Duck), Harry Connick, Jr. (The Happy Elf), Stephen Schwartz (Geppetto & Son) and the team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Seussical, Once On This Island, Twice Upon A Time).

After every Friday night performance of Once Upon a Mattress, there will be a free Something Fun experience. Audiences may experience an autograph session with Princess Fred and friends, an Opening Night reception, a Q&A or even a mini-class with the cast. The experience will change each week.

Once Upon a Mattress is the last of three productions this season in the Coterie's Family Series and is funded in part by the Missouri Arts Council (MAC) and the ArtsKC Fund.

ABOUT THE COMPANY
The Coterie has assembled some of the finest musical theatre talent: Will Amato, Katelyn Baron, Tyler Eisenreich, Enjoli Gavin, Matthew King, Frankie Kranz, Ron Megee, Lauretta Pope, Grant Prewitt, Julie Shaw, Noah Whitmore and Stefanie Wienecke.

Announcing Coterie's 2012-13 Season

For Immediate Release

SHARE THE UNEXPECTED AT THE COTERIE: A Groundbreaking Musical, Fairy Tale Misfits, the Holocaust, even a bathtub crocodile

34th Season provides unique mix of popular literature, drama and musical theater

Share the unexpected during the Coterie Theatre's 2012-13 season of live theatre. A unique blend of productions includes notable works of fiction, two musicals including, a premiere from the Coterie's Lab for New Family Musicals, and a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the award-winning Dramatic Health Education Project (formerly the Dramatic AIDS Education Project). Now entering its 34th season of live theatre, the Coterie Theatre continues to provide shared unique theatre experiences for all ages especially families and young audiences.

"Our 34th season will be another ambitious one for the Coterie. The Coterie's Lab for New Family Musicals will host an awesome holiday production and work with the composing/writing team behind Shrek the Musical to create the premiere Theatre for Young Audiences version," said Jeff Church, artistic producing director. "There will be several wonderful productions based on books: Christopher Paul Curtis' Bud Not Buddy, Lois Lowry's Number the Stars and a piece based on Scholastic's Dear America Series.

"Our Coterie At Night series defies expectations of traditional notions of the Coterie. The profoundly exciting musical, Spring Awakening, will open our season, for teens and older," he said. "No school performances for this one. We programmed this to celebrate the 20th anniversary of caring for teenage health through our award-winning Dramatic Health Education Program."

With the economic challenges facing schools, the Coterie continues to grow, Church said. "We now have two exciting touring productions that go directly into the schools, The Presidents as well as Tell-Tale Electric Poe, which will come back to the Coterie for a return engagement for everyone to see."

THE COTERIE'S 2012 - 2013 SEASON:
• Spring Awakening, September 6-30, 2012. Winner of 8 Tony Awards including Best Musical! Full-length. Broadway original. Book and lyrics by Steven Sater; music by Duncan Sheik; based on the play by Frank Wedekind; Directed by Coterie Artistic Director Jeff Church. This Coterie At Night production celebrates 20 years of protecting teens through the Coterie's award-winning Dramatic Health Education Project.

A play from 1891 becomes a great rock musical from Broadway! With its affecting score by recording star Duncan Sheik, raging choreography and magnetic young cast, Spring Awakening goes back in time to explore what's changed — and what hasn't—on the path to understanding sex. It is a story of first love and lasting regrets. But most remarkably, it's a musical contemplating questions that teenagers have been asking forever. (Content note: for mature audiences. Sexual topics discussed, sexual situations, strong language.) Coterie At Night Series | No one under 13 admitted.

• Dear America: Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie, September 12- 30, 2012. By Kristiana Gregory; Adapted by Julie Jensen; directed by Amanda Kibler. Young Hattie Campbell and her friend Pepper travel in 1847, from Independence, Missouri, across the Oregon Trail with hopeful hearts. Crossing the rough prairies and rigorous mountains, the two girls share joyful events and sobering realities. A fine glimpse of history on a human scale! Appreciated by ages 8 and older.

•The Presidents! Touring schools October 2 – December 21, 2012. Book and lyrics by Steven Cole Hughes; music by Jessica Jackson; directed by Tosin Morohunfola. Two wildly dexterous secret service agents fly around the country in Air Force One, singing songs about all the presidents, and lots of fast patter. With heart pumping pace, this is a roller coaster of knowledge AND humor! A perfect compliment to this election year and coming inauguration. Tours to schools with set, music and sound system. School Tour. Appreciated by 2nd through 6th grades.

•SHREK The Musical, October 30 – December 30, 2012. World premiere Theatre for Young Audiences version! Music by Jeanine Tesori; book and Lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire; based on the DreamWorks film and book by William Steig; directed by Jeff Church; choreographed by Andy Parkhurst.

"Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek…" And thus begins the fairy tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey, a feisty princess who resists her rescue, and a cast of banished fairy tale misfits. Through heroic feats, Shrek reverses a curse and learns to raise his Freak Flag high. It's a story of adventure, friendship and ogre love that's bringing ugly back! Part of the Coterie's Lab for New Family Musicals, working with Broadway authors and composers. (Content note: a few toilet humor jokes about gas). Appreciated by ages 7 through adult.

• Number the Stars, January 22 – February 21, 2013. Based on the Newbery Medal winning book by Lois Lowry; directed by Cynthia Levin. Lowry's story of the rescue of the Danish Jewish population during World War II is one of the most inspiring in human history. The Johansen family faces soldiers, interrogations, fierce dogs and the loss of loved ones to help their neighbors, the Rosens, escape across the ocean to Sweden and safety. Appreciated by ages 10 through adult.

• Tell-Tale Electric Poe, Touring schools January 29 - February 22; performs at Coterie February 23 – March 10, 2013. From the works of Edgar Allan Poe; adaptation/direction by Jeff Church; music performed live by Rex Hobart. In a masterful blending of actor and musician, expertly performed Poe stories and poems are complemented by musical lines and retorts from a reactive electric guitar! This two-person show with full touring set/lights/sound, overflows with poetry, riffs, ghosts and morbid prose floating in an atmospheric setting. Horrifying and humorous, our sublime creation blends old with new. Featuring: The Pit and the Pendulum, The Tell-Tale Heart, as well as the poems "Alone," "The Bells," and "The Raven." Appreciated by ages 11 through adult.

• Slashdance! March, 2013 Dates/Location TBD. World premiere written and directed by Ron Megee. What a feeling! Alexis Bowens, a female dynamo, is a true MANIAC: welder by day, dancer by night. Her dream is to get into a real dance company though, and nothing's going to get in her way, not even a giant herd of fast-moving, virus-infected human cannibals—or her boyfriend's lack of support. She will finally get her big break! Killing cannibalistic hoards is even better for her abs than Pilates. Coterie At Night Series | Rated PG-13. Under 13 not admitted.

• Bud, Not Buddy, April 9 – May 24, 2013. Based on the Newbery Medal and Coretta Scott King Award-winning book by Christopher Paul Curtis; adapted by Reginald Andre Jackson; directed by Scot Copeland. Call him Bud, not Buddy. Bud makes up his mind to journey on his own in search of the man he believes to be his father: jazz composer and musician Herman E. Calloway. Set against the backdrop of the Great Depression, times could be hard for Bud after the loss of his mother. But nothing can stop him - not hunger, not fear, not even vampires, because Bud's got a few things going for him. Appreciated by ages 8 through adult.

• Young Playwrights' Festival 2013, April 24 and 25, 2013. The Coterie's Young Playwrights' Festival features a collection of new work by the city's best young writers. The rich and varied theatrical writings which emerge from a year-long process are forged into an ambitious festival of script-in-hand stagings utilizing professional actors.

• Lyle the Crocodile, June 18 – August 4, 2013. By Bernard Waber; adapted by Kevin Kling; music by Richard Gray; directed by Missy Koonce and Ron Megee. What a croc! Loveable Lyle livens up a summer's day. When the Primm family moves into their New York City apartment, their son Joshua is surprised to find a crocodile in the tub. The multi-talented Lyle quickly becomes part of the family, but a nasty neighbor, Mr. Grumps, has it out for the reptile, and it is only a matter of time before he accuses Lyle of frightening his cat. Lyle is shipped off to the zoo, but his old showbiz partner, Hector P. Valenti, jailbreaks him just in time to save the day when Mr. Grumps' brownstone catches fire. Recommended for all ages.
